Hi. Schizophrenia is a complex disease and nobody knows for sure what causes it. Genetic factors has its` role - person who have somebody in the family with schizophrenia, is more likely to get the disease. Schizophrenia occurs in 1% of the general population. However, 10% of people who have parents, brothers and sisters with schizophrenia, will get this disorder. Symptoms of schizophrenia usually appear in your late 20s-30s.

There is a very large genetic component to schizophrenia with a 70% concordance rate between twins. I would strongly recommend an appointment with a genetics counselor if possible. It may not change your mind on having children, but it will let you know the risk up front.

My fiance has schizophrenia. This disease has began to destroy our lives. He is very ill and medication is not seeming to help. He is under a doctor's supervision but I feel so helpless! I do not know where to turn or how to help him most of the time. I recently found out I am pregnant but dont know how to tell him. I am afraid for our child and our future! What do I do now?
