Sea kelp stabilizes the metabolic rate. This means that if you had a borderline under-active thyroid for example, it would boost your metabolism (speed it up), if it were over-active (possible signs: you burn calories too fast, can't put on weight, etc.) it would slow it down. It basically takes your metabolism to it's optimum level, where it should be.
Being rich in iodine, it is also going to be helpful for anyone looking to grow their hair as it is reported to help with faster hair growth. So I can see why it would have been recommended for both weight loss and weight gain.
It is a natural laxative, which is why - especially in the high does some of you are taking - it will cause loose bowl movements.
The other thing to mention is that I haven't seen anyone say that it clashes with prescription meds for the thyroid, so this is one (like any herbal product if your are on meds) to check with your GP before taking in conjunction with other medications. Pharmacists are often very knowledgeable about herbal products and can check compatibility too.
Also, if you're wondering if any herbal med is going to work after 3 weeks, well the answer is that you haven't waited long enough!
Most herbal medications will take 4-6 weeks to be fully in your system, so the full effects won't be known until after this time. Every one is different, so while you might see no effect in 3 weeks, someone else might have had significant effects already.
It's also true that some vitamins and minerals can be dangerous if taken at high levels for a long period of time. Vits like c and b are water soluable and flushed through the system very quickly - so the body can always take more (within reason) - where as some minerals that we don't need much of, (or vitamins like A and D) are stored and, if taken in high does over long periods can store in organs and be a health risk.
You should also bear in mind that Iodine will appears in most high quality multi-vits so if you are taking one and Kelp as a suppliment, it might be worth thinking about taking one less of the recommended number of pills a day on the Kelp bottle (so that the dose in the multi-vit takes its place) if there is a good level already in with your vit/mins pill.
It's not an good idea to ever take more than recommended on the bottle. Also, it is NOT recommended for under 18s!
Hope that helps!

It's my understanding that vitamin A is also needed to help deliver the iodine.
The reason I am trying this is I have had two 180 degree changes in my weight in a year and a 1/2. I was heavy, I suddenly lost 45 pounds over 4 months. I had started a new medicine and also had a major life change at the time the weight loss happened. 6 months later I was taken off that medicine and started on a different medicine and my life had become normalized, I gained ALL that weight back. I dont know if it was the medicine or life change, but my metabolism changed. Neither of the two med's are known for weight change side effects. I understand stress can effect metabolism. I had my thyroid checked and its on the lower side, but not enough to warrant prescription medicines for it.
I was thin, I loved where I was, I felt like a million bucks, I want that back!

Oh Pooh! People in Japan do a lot of things differently than we do here in the USA so if they have less breast cancer you can NOT say it is because of the kelp! That is simply bad science!
If you are finding it so hard to eat less then I recommend R&D Diet Cookies. They are natural and will curb your hunger and cravings so that it will be easier to stay on a diet to lose weight.

Iodine is an essential trace mineral and you are right that it is not safe to take with thyroid medications or while pregnant/breast feeding, and there are some other cautions that are worth looking into.
I know that in the UK (where I am) we have slightly lower RDA on iodine to the US, but even taking that into account, that sounds like quite a lot of kelp!
An example of a product I'm familiar with would be 30mg of sea Kelp taken up to 3x per day - so, 90mg of kelp in total. I know people who have had very good effects based on this level.
If I'm remembering correctly, I believe in the US the recommendation on iodine is 150mcg per day, so it's not a great idea to take much larger amounts (especially longer term) without consulting your doctor, pharmacist or a medical professional who can confirm that it's suitable for you to do so.

I purchased Natures Way Kelp today. The bottle says its 660mg of Kelp. The Supplement Fact label says that Iodine is at 400mcg and iodine and is 267% Daily Value. Im assuming of the recomended daily allowance.....?? And guaranteed to contain 0.06%iodine. The bottle says "Take 1 capsule daily" and do not exceed recomended dose. It's cautions mentions hyperthyroidisnm, pregnacy, nursing and prescribed iodine medication.

Hi Dezdon,
If you, or anyone else is concerned in iodine poisoning, then you should only consume it in natural foods. Any supplement can cause an overdose, whereas eating the food will not cause the same effect in your body. Kelp, the most common one wil contain 6mg per 1/4 cup, but the body will metabolize it differently than supplements. Everyone should reasearch a product, food, or supplement before thinking about consuming it. To be safe, please google it. There is tons of information out there on the effects of supplements verses eating the food.
