When I was young, I was curious about my body parts, studying them tediously after showers; at that age, my labia were small and perfectly symmetrical, yet I always remember a strange and very evident fishy odor and I carry that same odor to this day.

The problem all started when my family went to my grandmother's house on Independence Day when I was 10, and I wore my usual jeans and t-shirt. While walking around, I discovered an uncomfortable burning itch along my left labia. I rushed to the bathroom, and took a look at it, and found not apparent changes in appearance. Puzzled and irritable, I scratched it until it bled, and found myself in so much pain that I decided to try and ignore the problem. At this age, I was completely oblivious to sexual activities/the difficulties that accompany these activities (STDs).

As I turned 11, I would observe my terribly itchy left labia daily, pulling hard on the skin. Gradually I found that only my left labia had doubled, maybe even tripled in size, turned a deep brown, and was covered in terribly itchy lumps on both sides. At this point, I often struggled to walk; I could barely stand, my labia being so terribly irritated. Still I mentioned nothing and pushed myself to walk straight and not keel over. I also noticed a great deal of clear discharge on my underwear. Still, I was naive and thought it was normal or just from puberty. When wearing pads for my period, the itch would increase so dramatically that I wanted to scream from the irritation. Still, I remained silent.

Now I am 12, and I see this to be a definite issue. The lumps are large and persist, but now appear on my right labia as well, though this labia is still small. I suppose that from all my picking and stretching my left labia increased in size? I am now very self-conscious about my hideous labia and afraid of even my parents seeing them. I still have the itch, odor, and heavy discharge and have been researching the problem for almost a year now, but nobody seems to have had the same issue.

What could this be? Can you get STD’s even without having sex?

Thanks.

Listen, Your parents love you no matter what your labia looks like, although it may be embarrassing, they need to see this... They can then take you to a doctor and have this checked out. This could be a very simple problem and nothing to get worked up over. However, if you continue to wait, what may have started out as a small issue could lead to a major issue.

As a father, if my daughter had this issue I would want to know about it. No parent wants there children to be uncomfortable or unwell.

If you haven't yet, swallow your pride and tell your Mom and Dad. PLEASE!

Sounds like an out of control yeast infection. Have you tried any medications for yeast infections? If you've had this problem for as long as you say you have, over the counter creams probably won't work all that much. You will need a prescription to get rid of the infection. You really do need to see a doctor. You'd be surprised at how quickly the right medication can clear this problem up.

I am checking this out and am thirteen. I went through something very similar, but is on both labia, from really tight cloths and sh*t. it is super uncomfortable- I have to wear tampons, cause tho I told my mom, we don't want me ot have surgery, and don't want a doc looking at me (at least I dont). I have been researching , lately, bcaus eu can c tht they hang a tiny tiny bit more thsn most through by bathing suit. apparantly it normal, and when we start to have sex- most guys like it. I feel much better without use off pads, better quality undies, a little less tight skinny jeans, and the knowledge tht when I eventually start to have sex, my partners will like it. btw, try gilly hicks down underwear. so comfy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
