My left labia minora has been swollen for more then twelve hours, about 3 times its normal size. This is embarrassing, but it's not painful unless there's pressure or my underwear causing friction. It's annoying. It became swollen last night after sex, there was a lot of friction but no lubricant. My friend told me to put ice on it, I did and the swelling is still there. I am just very concerned. Will the swelling go down? or what can I do to make the swelling go away the fastest?

i have kinda the same problem, I havent had sex in a year and my labias had swollen twice their sizes. I kept gettin in the tub and eventully the swelling went down. However, I recently had sex again but this time with a condom and ky jelly. With this, I have itchyness, redness, swelling, no discharge, it feels as though i want more sex but and i can take more pounding (excuse me, beside the point.) But when I scratch it feels a little reliefed but the goes to intense buring and itching, like someone keeps grapping at me. From my reading I learned that these symptoms are from either the of lubrications on the condom or the actually ky. From what I gather it is from the ky because of me being sensitve in that area. I really haven't found any solutions yet besides soaking, and to let you know monistat will not work because its not a yeast infection.

Girls, take an inventory of what you are consuming. I mean the type of foods, liquor, vitamins, drugs, cigarettes etc. If you are acidic you can have this problem. Some women have it all the time. It is called vulvodynia. Some only during sex b/c the natural vaginal juices are acidic. Let me know if any of you are interested in hearing what to eat and what not to eat. It takes a few minutes. I have this problem usually a day after sex, next time you should use more lube. Nothing is ever wrong with lube, when it doubt pour it on! Swelling for me is some times, well most of the time accompanied with itching. As for it to go down, make sure that u dont leave the ice on too long but yes ice compresses can help a lot. In fact I sew little pouches and put rice in them, then through it in the freezer and it works 10x better than an ice compress. And it can double as a heating pad since u can toss it in the microwave with no problems.

As for swelling in particular could just be irritation to cause them to swell.
There are several different problems stds and not that can cause the itch and all seem to be very unknown about many treatments. Yogurt ive heard can be helpful if u eat it daily as some of the bacteria is beneficial and similiar to what your vagina has as good bacteria go. I do not have any discharge problems either, i just try to shower often. The vagina DOES NOT require soaps!!! If the bacteria are the problem change your underwear often to avoid moisture in them and do not sleep with underwear on. I know it sounds weird but yes. To wash your vagina you just use plain water, as many vagina's are very sensitive to soaps because they can disrupt the normal bacteria.

Any questions should still be directed towards your doctor. But from hearing a lot of other ppl with the same swelling/itching problem - it can take awhile for the doctor to properly determine what the problem maybe.

I have found the solution to the problem...I recently had sex with my boyfriend, and afterwards had very swollen vaginal lips and minor pain. I just want to say that during sex i noticed i had become very dry, and it think by reading all of the blogs on the net about this issue, it is clear that if enough natural lub is not produced, get some from the store. I am very confident that this will solve this problem.

Please ladies dont be afraid, dont be embarrassed!
Ok this has happened to me twice, the first time i also thought the worst (some sort of STD or Yeast infection) but it was not as scary as I had thought. I had seen my Gynacologist for a full STD and HIV testing, as well as PAPsmear and everything else in the book, they all came back saying I was 100 percent healthy and normal. So I sucked it up and started talking to my Doctor about how my man and I have sex and she and I came to the same conclusion: the swelling was caused by having sex when my vagina hadnt created a "wet enough" environment to be able to receive my man.
On both occasions my boyfriend and I had had rather "rough" sex with no condom on him. Now ladies the bartholin gland (we have quite a few in our vaginas) is the gland that secretes the fluid that makes you "wet" so it creates less friction between his penis and your vagina when you have sex. I distinctly remember on both occasions (bc one was last night and I delt with this all morning) that I wasn't feeling as "wet", not that I wasn't turned on but just that my vagina was dry so when he first put it in there was a lot of resistance and pulling on my Labia (folds of skin surrounding the clit) it was uncomfortable but with in a few seconds of his thrusting I was more focused on how nice it was beginning to feel inside that I had almost forgotten about the tugging feeling. And I certainly started to get wet but it just wasnt how I usually am when Im that excited.
Now I brought up the "rough" part because we were all over the place and in different positions for about an hour. When we stopped I looked down and saw my labia swollen up about 3 times its normal size, it was bright red, tender to the touch but no pain other than when touched. I realized that because I had tried to ignore the initial pain of my man pushing into me while not stimulated (not wet) and while having sex didnt want him to stop I had basically allowed my poor labia to get tugged, pushed, yanked, and pounded on for an hour straight!! And yes it is embarrassing to have your once tiny cute clit suddenly be the size of your ring finger but laugh it off with your partner because the swelling will eventually subside and it will be tiny again. I have found that a cold compress (ice cubes inside a soft hand towel) is good for the swelling, apply ice in intervals like 10 minutes on 10 minutes off, a cream like A&D helped with the tenderness and made it so the labia didnt rub against my underwear, take some Advil and avoid moving around for as long as you can, dont obsess over wanting the swelling to go down fast bc its gonna take how ever much time it needs and thats that. It was a whole day after the rough sex and everything down there is back to normal for me, AND my man went out and bought us some KY lubricant for those times when its just not wet enough.

-Although this is how I have delt with it, All of the symptoms are related to the Bartholin's Gland and it is possible some of you may have a condition where the Bartholin Gland is blocked The blockage can be for many different reasons...the most common are an abscess, cyst, or just "natural" blockage of fluids. ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed
- Its possible the whole thing is cause by an allergy to the type of condoms if used.
-It may also be a condition called vaginismus (***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed)
- Also read up on a condition called CANDIDA -it addresses a core of the problem- the digestive system and how what you may be eating and ingesting is effecting your vagina

Please ladies dont be afraid, dont be embarrassed! Ask your doctor for help or help finding a doctor who can better help you!

I don't know how it happen but I gave it a day and it was gone and back to normal. If it had go on any longer I would've definetly gone to the doctors. I just hope it doesn't happen again.

Sometimes it takes days for the swelling to go down and the itching and sensitivity, for me, can last for a week.  I have always been sensitive to laundry detergents and if I travel and use a new soap (never directly on my vagina) I get a yeast infection or irritation immediately so I'm very careful, never have a bath with anything but baking soda in it...etc. But I think I am allergic to my man. It's been 12 years of swelling for me, its not dependent on lubrication. I believe I am allergic to his sweat. No one and nothing has ever helped me get rid of this problem. I can reduce how often it occurs by making sure he washes well with non scented soap and rinses even better, I rinse myself often before and afterwards but at least once every two months it happens where I get more than the usual itching and irritation but swell up like a balloon. Last night I fell asleep with an ice pack between my legs and cannot wear any underpants under my skirt as the slightest rubbing irritates it more. Anti itch creams make it worse for me and plain yogurt applied directly to the vagina doesn't do anything either, although for 30 sec. it calms it down. I soak in baking soda which doesn't seem to make a huge difference but doesn't hurt and offers temporary relief. I have had plenty of partners previous to my long term relationship and this has never ever happened before. I think the worst part of it besides the immediate discomfort is that our sex is no longer spontaneous and it comes with the knowledge in the back of our minds that I may be annoyed for days afterwards with swollen labia. If only there was some kind of natural wipe I could use on him and me right before hand. Let me know if you discover anything useful...Good luck everyone.
