it's definitely not gas. i've had menstrual cramps, i've had gas cramps, adn this is nothing like it. where gas is this obvious kind of pocket in pain, this is definitely what everyone else discribes, a "string" of pain going down to the pelvic floor.
jeez, this thing is pretty common i guess. i wish i knew what was going on :-(

Wow how crazy to see so many posts about this! I too have gotten it for as long as I can remember - maybe 3-4 times a year. The string pulling comparison is exactly right!
Right now I am 6 months pregnant and getting it so I was freaking out but knowing I have had it before leads me to believe it doesn't have to do with the pregnancy...I agree that it's either a nerve, muscle or possibly yeast. I can't believe I didn't mention it to my doctor today but it went away yesterday and I forgot! It's back tonight but like everyone else says will be gone again soon....so puzzling....

It can't be endometriosis if guys get it too. I've had this all my life - never actually hurting me if I don't do anything to provoke it, but cleaning out my navel is a really delicate operation, because if I put any pressure on it I'm liable to get a severe stabbing pain right down to my groin.
FWIW, I've always felt that it feels like some sort of adhesion.

I get the exact same thing! I am so glad to know that there are other people out there like me! I get it randomly; it seems to hit whenever it feels like. I always thought it was like dehydration, but drinking water makes me have to go to the bathroom more, which hurts so much worse--I have to stretch and sit upright and hold my abdomen because it hurts SO BAD.
I have no idea what it is, and no one knows what I'm talking about! I have no clue, but hope someone out there has a name..and a cure for it!
Sometimes I take a couple aleve and drink water..it alleviates the pain, but doesn't make it go away. You just kind of have to wait it out it seems. I definitely don't think it's a strain, since it randomly pops up, regardless of what I've done...it's a mystery.
Hoping this mystery will be solved soon,
In Pain

Yep, this thread describes exactly what I occasionally get too. I don't think I experience it to the same extent as some of the others though, as I wouldn't describe it as excruiciating, just sharp and uncomfortable.
I find that it often happens after I've been sitting down for a while and I stand up, stretching my stomach muscles, and I get a shooting pain down from my belly button. I find that if I 'pull' my belly button upwards, it increases the pain/sensation, as does arching my back. It has to be some sort of nerve/tissue attached to the belly button, I'm thinking, but why does it only happen fairly occasionally?

I am a 31 year old male and I have occasionally felt this for years, so it is definitely not pregnancy. I really doubt it is gas.

i am 19 and have been getting these exact pains for about 2 years now and its really freaking me out. im normally not health paranoid but im starting to think it might be serious. whenever i extend my torso it feels like a string is connected to my belly button and clitoris and someone is tugging at the sting from inside my body.
some ideas i thought could be right are:
YEAST- i have a terrible diet. i am not over weight. if anything im under weight. but i am in college and tend to drink alot of alcohol and junk foods and soda. i have had yeast infections before so maybe i have yeast in my body.
PERIOD- could be right because i am getting the pains now and i am at the end of my cycle. but for the guys who knows?
SCAR TISSUE- im not aware of any scar tissue of hernias but who knows.
DEHYDRATION- i never drink enough water and my roommate says she gets pains and drinks water to help but i dont think she has the same pains as me.....
the idea of strains from working out doesnt seem right because i dont work out or strain my body
and gas seems a little NIEVE you obviously arent in the same pain. Spare me.
im getting irritated because not only am i in pain but everyone thinks im crazy and is like "im sure its fine" but its NOT FINE.

i get the same pains as well. its like a sharp pain behind the belly button and it goes downwards. i've done some research and the only thing i've found is that the vagus nerve runs near to the umbilicus and can occasionally become "pinched" or stimulated, which can cause sharp pains in the abdomen. I would definitely say that the pain i feel is similar to a pinched nerve so i tend to agree with the theory.
-and it definitely isn't gas, thats a different pain and we all know what that feels like.

It's absolutely NOT gas nor is it related to a menstrual cycle. I've had this same "string" symptom for about a decade now...completely random and not tying in with my period, food intake, exercise, etc. It's quite quick-lasts for perhaps a minute or two, and only when I'm upright. When I hunch over (because of the pain), it completely disappears. As to what it is...I (sadly) have no clue. I'm just glad to see that it is legitimate and that I'm not crazy!

I just experienced this a second ago. I actually was just getting up from the toilet. It was exactly as you all have been describing it. Now it is completely gone since I have sat down and relaxed.
Whatever this "string" is, it must have just gotten strained pinched somehow. Doesn't seem like a big deal to me since it is fine now after sitting for a bit.
