It is not Gas, has nothing to do with it. It happens almoast as it is a sharp pulling burning pain almost on the surface, starting underneath a belly button and continues down to the bladder. I am sitting at work right now and searching answers, shall I find out, ill post it.
.....It hurts/burns like crazy, im gonna be driven to hospital today if it doesn't stop.Peace....scared sh*tless

i think this is because if you sit in a chair long enough leaning back ur stomach gets used to it it always happens to me when i lean back in my computer chair

I get the same sharp pain behind my navel. I get this a couple of times a year. I get it after I stretch weird or sometimes I get it at night while i'm sleeping on my back and my bladder is full. The pain leaves me hunched over and I have to sit down to urinate.

I did some research and there is a ligament that runs from the navel to the top of the bladder. Its called the Median Umbilical Ligament. It's quite possible that the pain that we are feeling is a stretching of this ligament. Pregnant women feel the same sharp pain as the round ligaments that attach the uterus to the abdomen stretch.

Hey guys, I have that exact same thing, it was waaaay worse when I was younger, it would happen every few months and the pain would be so intense I could move or use the bathroom, and that was before I got my period or anything so I dout its related. "Pulling the string" perfectly describes the pain, I always thought I was the only one who had this pain! Now that I'm older it doesn't happen as often but I have other belly button pains that can feel similar. Oh and I noticed for me, the pain would happen more if I was hot, like in summer time.
Well I hope someone can help and find out what this is!!

I have only just started having these pains in the last couple of hours, its very strange and when people describe it as a pain in the belly button like a string being pulled it is exactly right, and it also happens when i straighten up, i am pleased however to hear that mostly it doesnt cause any harm and is obviously not very rare. Because i cant be bothered to read every post can anyone tell me if there are any effects of this and what it is?

Cheers

well, it's comforting to know I'm not the only one, but geez....with all the confused people on the net that I've found, seems like SOMEONE would have an answer.

I should be in bed right now, but I just got in a fight with my boyfriend because he thinks it's funny to see my reaction when he pokes my belly button. it's so uncomfortable and weird and painful that I could punch him.

yeah i know what you guys are talking about. i have the pain right now.. started feeling it last night and ive had it before probably every other month or so.. my grandma told me that it is probably because the way i wear my pants.. ( on my hips compared to wearing it up higher like the older generations)... she thought that maybe i bruised my stomach on the inside. or that its because i sit down alot at school and then i sit a lot at the computer afterward every day. i feel the same exact pains that you guys feel..im a 17 year old female and have been feeling these pains maybe since i was 13 or 14. i am not sexually active. BUT i have experienced pelvic pain also.. this does not feel the same as what you and i are feeling right now... when i get pelvic pains, i feel a sharp sensation in my vagina area, like i have to urinate. then when i do sit on the toilet, the pain weakens put i cant urinate, unless i force myself to do and only a few hot stingy drops come out.. the pain lasts for maybe 2-4 hours.

the pain that you guys are describing and what i am feeling now does not move or anything...it stays in one spot...im actually really worried...i dont have a doctor, havnt had one in a few years...

I have the exact same pain. I looked at my belly button using a magnifying glass and noticed a tiny blackish (what looked to be fingernail clipping). I used my tweezers to tug on it and low and behold, I pull out an earwig.

I'm a 21 year old male who seems to get this pain every so often. It is, as people have described, the feeling of a string attaching the genitals to the belly button that elicits a strong pain sensation whenever you try and stretch it out. It really freaked me out the first time it happened because I thought I was going to rip a muscle or something because the "string" also seems very thin and fragile.

I work out about 4-5 times per week doing abdominal exercises on most days. I have realized that whenever push myself hard to do extra sets and do not adequately stretch the abdominal muscles after the exercises, i sometimes develop the pain the next day. I believe this pain is simple the result of tightness in a part of the abdominal muscles and its symptoms can simply be avoided by stretching the abdominal muscles regularly.

I'm a 21 yr old female and I've also had the same pain you're all describing for as long as I can remember. It happens randomly a few times a year, but for me the real pain only lasts for a few minutes then I just have to be careful not to stretch back too far for 20 minutes or so. I don't think it is anything too serious. It feels like the muscle or whatever it is, is contracting. I have to hunch over until it slowly loosens and goes away then I can sit up straight.

I think it may just be some sort of muscle spasm/cramp like a charley horse, probably caused by the same things that cause charley horses and other muscle cramps. That is the only thing I can think of that would explain the wide variety of people experiencing it.

Charley horses can happen after strenuous exercise (a few of the guys mentioned it happened after lifting weights), during pregnancy (this same pulling pain is mentioned on dozens of pregnancy forums), from dehydration (someone had mentioned it happened the morning after they had a lot to drink), and from hormonal imbalances (affecting menstruating and pregnant women). I don't think its anything to go to the doctor over unless the pain is severe and/or frequent.

This is ridiculous. It's been a long time and no one can answer this. I'm experiencing this pain right now and notice it occasionally after vigorous physical activity (playing sports or going to the gym). It's like a "string" attached from behind the the navel to my groin. I have to stay hunched over and can't stretch out. If I do, I get unimaginable pain.

Usually I've just waited out my pain until it takes care of itself.

I see all this quack advice on STDs or hernias or gas or c**p like that, personally I'm tired of hearing it. I think it's a pulled muscle that needs time to resolve itself.

I just found out that the pain that is very similar to some of the other posts is an umbilical hernia. Treatment is very simple for this. A same day surgery with supervision at home for 24 hours.

I also get this same pain, the string from the belly button and down, but it is a very quick and very sharp pain. It lasts only some seconds, but can occur a few times during the day, also at night while lying down.

I've been working out, doing situps and using weights, and so maybe it is connected to this. I just recently had a gyno exam and got a clean bill of health (despite endometriosis running in the family), so I don't think the cause is there.

Intuitively, after reading here, some nerve or ligament stretch or pinch, and/or yeast infection sounds to me as likely causes.
Thanks for your posts!
