Proctalgia fugax is manifest by deep pain in the rectum that feels like a severe muscle cramp –d which is exactly what it is: a cramping of the pubococcygeus or levator ani muscles. It frequently occurs at night and may also occur after intercourse. Some patients describe an urge to defecate although the rectum is usually empty. No one knows for sure what causes proctalgia fugax but thickening of the internal anal sphincter muscles is present in many people who suffer from this condition. Although warm baths, enemas, botulinum toxin, fiber supplements, anti-inflammatories and analgesics have all been used with varying success, I find that biofeedback and other relaxation techniques are the most useful for treating this recurrent condition

HI! I was wondering if you ever found a diagnoses? I have been experiencing the same symptoms for the past 2 almost 3 months. The pain comes and goes, but stops me in my tracks every time. I was recently had kidney stones and thought maybe it was related but the stones were on my left side. I would appreciate any feedback you or anyone else can give me. Thanks, LB

Dude, I passed a gall stone and it felt like hell on earth. Later I was told by several female medical folks that passing a gall stone is as close to having a baby as a man is likely to experience. Gall stones usually are not individual...they come in gangs of thugs ready to make you cry like a baby....soooo, be sure you have that checked out. Good luck. Namaste.

I just responded to your cry for information...and I said, "gall stones"...I think they were "kidney stones"; which ever they were they felt like they were demons shredding my tranquility. Peace and Namaste.

I know how you feel about the pain! Mine happens mostly when I bend over in a certain way. It takes a couple of minutes for it to subside but lately it is getting more frequent. I had a JP drain in my stomach for internal bleeding that was from removing my ovary so I also don't have any ovaries. It makes me wonder if it is from the scarring as it took quite some time for that hole to close after they pulled the drain out. When it happens I just hope that I will live through it as it hurts that much. I feel like vomiting after and sometimes get sick to my stomach and even headaches. I just had a CT Scan today so I will have to see if they find anything out!

I have a sharp stabbing pain right around my right hip bone that started tonight. I have kidney stones and this does not feel the same. However, during my C-Section 4 months ago, the doctor found a softball size tumor covering my left ovary and removed the ovary. The past few days I've been able to lay on my back and feel a lump in my lower right abdomen. After consulting my sister in law, who is a RN, she thinks it could be an ovarian cyst which may have now ruptured. Hope this helps someone!
