I'm 20 and starting to get some sharp pain in my left hip. It usually happens as I try to stand from sitting for a prolonged period of time (I sit in front of a computer all day), but the last few days I've been experiencing the pain more frequently. Now when I walk I sometimes feel the pain. Some self-testing showed that certain movements of the joint cause the pain, while others cause no pain. Stretching my leg out and back is particularly painful. Now as I am typing this at my desk I am flexing the muscles attached to the joint and it feels like the ball of the hip is popping in and out of the socket (I doubt it's actually popping in and out, but it feels like it). When I put tension it's fine but relaxing the muscles while in a sitting position is painful. All of it leads me to believe the joint may be eroded.

Hi. I don't know if replying to this post will still help, seeing as it's posted over a year ago. Try researching about "hip bursitis." I think it's what most of the people who replied to this have. And yeah, you should probably not ignore it; but if you already consulted a doctor about it, well, I hope you get better.

i am a 23 year old male with similar pain in one hip or the other from time to time.  it happens when i have been sitting on a hard surface for too long.  its excruciating pain inside the hip joint, and is worse with any movement of the joint. it feels sort of like i have crushed up glass in the hip socket.  went to the dr and got some xrays, and a diagnosis of acetabular retroversion, which was described to me as an abnormality in the femur (a knob that sticks out of the ball) that causes it to not fit correctly in the socket.  all the literature i have seen on AR says differently, that it is a misalignment of the socket that causes an abnormal rotation of the femur.  i was offered no explanation as to why sitting on hard surfaces triggers it, but was assured that my xrays clearly showed AR.  the pain will last for about a week, then it will be completely gone and i can run half marathons with no pain. its really strange

SCIATICA!!! I am a 27 yr old mother of three and I started having this coming and going pain after the birth of my first child. I saw a very good doctor a few years ago who was treating my condition, but he passed away :( He told me sciatica was a nerve condition. My hips shifted after giving birth, making this a very common condition for mothers. The nerves are being pinched in the lower back/hip, causing sharp pinching pain that comes and goes. Some movements make it worse than others. My right leg also goes numb while walking, from a compressed nerve. The only treatment is rotating heating pad and cold pack during episodes. You can also google exercises that will help. Ibuprofen can help with the compression/inflammation. Muscle relaxers and pain killers may be necessary for extreme pain. This condition usually only comes in random episodes.

My diagnosis was Brusitis. I am 53 year old and the pain became just intolerable. I do not have insurance so it was very expensive to get relief. I got the cortizone shot and pain pills and now I can bare the pain, but it has not gone away. I have had it now for over 2 months. They want me to get an MRI but the quote was 2300.00. Pain pills=20.00. Shot with doctor visit was 389.00.

consult a good chiropractor.. it sounds as tho you may need some decompression treatments to assist. been there and it does help!

Seriously, why don't each of you go see your doctor instead of trying to self diagnose here.  If you have pain that lasts more than 24 hrs without any exertion, you should be calling your doctor.  Please don't take someone's diagnosis here and make it yours.  You should only practice medicine of you have a license to do so.

I've been having the same problem with the shooting hip pain.

I may have an answer. I know where my pain stems from, I had a few falls at work a few months ago and over the past have done much damage to my legs, I am overweight to boot. Extra strain from excercise or the lack of, and working in a high paced enviroment, combined with lack of nutrition and water may be causing inflamation of the muscle surrounding the hip. Prior injuries can repeat as ghost pain, especially if you cracked or pinched something before.

Basically all you can do is try to find the source of your problem:

*Lack of Excercise (makes muscles overwork when in high impact situations) or Overuse. (stresses muscles)

*Poor diet and high weight. (extra stress on the legs/hip/back)

*Prior injuries to the lower back and hip regions.

things like this, just a thought.

P.S. I hope you all can fix your own problems mine is spiking right now, I feel your pain literally. Good Luck.

~Mike

Thats what happened to me. Eventually I couldnt even sleep as the pain happened if I layed on my side or even moved. It was horrible. I woke up one day crying and finally went to the doctor. Got a shot of cortizone and the pain became under control. After about 4 weeks I feel pretty normal.

Well, yes I got more info I guess. After getting the shot I started to get better. Within 4 weeks I did not have to take any pain meds. I still feel the area. My orthopedic dr. seemed happy I was better. HOWEVER, the free clinic where I got an Xray called me a few weeks ago and wanted me to come right over. She gave me the report about the xray and she was very concerned. There was calcification in the soft tissue. That seemed to bother her and she insisted I contact my Ortho again. She even gave me her home phone numbers. So, I was a bit scared. My orthopedic called me back and said cancer/tumors can cause calcifaction, but since my pain went away she is not to concerned. I do not have insurance to get a MRI which is what would be best. We are just watching it for now.
