i am a 24 year old female. when i was in high school my pain started. It would be a super quick sharp pain that felt like someone had stabbed me under my left breast (felt like it was in my lung or heart). At that time, it would go away so quickly i didn't know what had happened. Sometimes it would take 2 or 3 breathes for it to go away.
in the years following i'd get a minor one hear and there. but over the past few years i've gotten them more frequently and it's concerning me.
I always attributed this to stress, and some even said don't worry it's a "gas pocket."
but it's getting to the point now where it lasts so long that i have to keep taking super short breathes. I'll try taking a deep breath to see if it's gone but the excrusiating pain will still be there. Afterwards, the area is sore.
i've never gone to the doctor because in all honesty i truly feel I will get the same result as everyone else.
What is this condition and what is causing it?!

i have the same kind of problem! i am 14 years old, i exercise daily, and i weigh 118 pounds. When i feel my breast it feels normal, but when i squeese it i feel something hard. sometimes it takes up my whole breast (i am a 38 a, so its not that big) and sometimes it is small and to the side. its in my other one to, but not as big. they get sore sometimes, but never painful. they arent red or anything. i told my mom and she said that its because of my period, and it will go away when they start. (they havent started yet) but its been two months and nothing has changed. i told her that and she said its because of swimteam and my period will start when i take a break. i have been out of swimteam for almost two weeks and STILL no difference. should i insist on going to the doctor? i know its probly not cancer becasue i am young and active, but it still might be dangerous and i am scared. some one please help!

what some of you people are describing sounds a lot what happened to me. after eating cheese one day i got the most unbearable pain around my chest and back and couldnt breathe. it was horrendous when taking a deep breath. i had heart scans etc and nothing. i found out i have severe reflux disease. its like heartburn times a million. i honestly feel like im dying when i get it! i got omeprazole from hospital but i think i need something stronger as it only takes the edge of the pain. like you guys said you dont have to be doing anything for it to happen. just check if its happening after your eating things like- cheese, curry, pepers, onions, minty things, tomatoes, and most of all beware of something called aspartame and anything else that ends in "tame" as that is the culprit. found mostly in diet juices and fizzy drinks its a killer!!!!!!!!!!

That's interesting, I felt these pains for the first time really today and I've been taking diet pills for about a month now. Vitamin B, C, E for acne.

That's so weird! I'm 15 and I've gotten them ever since I was young. It's exactly what the link described.

My symptoms are similar to yours. EXCEPT they are not only on the one side. Right in the middle just slightly under my breast, I get this sharp pain. Feels like I fell down landed on my stomach.. You know that feeling? the winded, in pain, hard to breath, feeling?
Then it starts to feel worse, and starts to go into my back. Get it every few days. today was the worst. Started around 3am and lasted for about 5 mins and came back every hour. Than around 6am, it started up again, lasted for 45 mins, hurt so bad, I was crying and thought I was going to be sick from it...
anyone have any ideas?

I get the very same thing. It started after I got pnuemonia in Jan. 2008. When I get the pinching pains in my chest area I can't tell if it's in my lungs or breast. Usually the pain will start in middle of the end of my sternum and radiate to either side of my chest. A few days a go it went to the left and then down my arm. I was relaxed reading a book so it's not anxiety. I've also had my heart checked out, etc.
When these attacks happen I also get an asthma attack that produces a lot o pleghm and am unable to think straight or talk well. Like your Mom, no one knows what is going in. Medical doctors keep telling me it's asthma, I think something in my body is causing the asthma. I've been to a Chinese medicine/Accupuncturist who told me it's my gallbladder and heart. I have also been to a biofeed back medicine gal and she says it's my gallbladder too.
I had to leave my accounting practice and some days I don't leave my house because the pain is so bad and sometimes I get asthma so bad I throw up.
I was fine and healthy until I got so sick with pneumonia in Jan, 2008. I almost died.
I wish I could find the answer. I have gained 30 pounds since last years because I don't get out and do the things I used to.

Hi guys,
Nice to know I'm not the only person on the planet with this problem. I've had this exact problem, sudden sharp stabbing pain under left breast, since I can remember, and I'm 24 now. When I was younger it used to feel like an electric shock in my chest, now it has progressed to this under my breast. For some reason, I have never told anyone until recently, I think I just accepted it as normal.
I hit this into google, because I had another onset of this yesterday, and it time to learn whats going on with me.
What I have noticed over the years, is that it can be triggered by drinking a caffinated soft drink, such as coke, or coffee.

I can sympathize- I have been trying to figure out what this is too. I am 24 and have gotten a similar pain for a while very sporadically. Now over the past 3 weeks, it happens almost ever day for long periods of time. I finally was panicked enough to visit the doctor where they did an EKG (found nothing) and took blood work which i haven't found out the results for yet. My pain sounds similar with a dull throbbing pain starting under the left breast towards the side and the longer it lasts it spreads up to the armpit and maybe down the top of my arm. My doctor suggested it may be some sort of heartburn related problem, which i have just started taking Prilosec for to see if this helps. I have also read that it could simply be strain or tension in those muscles- caused by trauma, heavy-lifting or even sleeping on my side. Which i recently have done all three! Look into your sleeping patterns though, it could be that.
Hope this helps- let me know what you find out- I hate not knowing what's wrong with me!

I had my gallbladder removed a little over a year ago and have also married a Mexican man. I can eat certain food that have me instantly in the bathroom. Even if it is just a bite of something and no mexican food spicy or not has done that to me. They told me when I had it removed that the purpose of your galbladder is to help distribute the fat into your system and without it there the fat goes right through you hence the stomach pains and the diarreha.

To all of you;.........you're probably going to be most surprised and some not so happy if you had your gall bladder out. I can speak from High experience, and I'm 54 years old. This started with me ten years ago and it has taken some time for me to figure out this strange problem. For me.........the answer was trans fats. Hydrogenated oils. Anything that had hydrogenated oils I almost died. I'm talking milk shakes, ice cream, lil debbie cookies with cream, any kind of too much cream, like: restaurants that served my favorite rich foods like pasta with cream sauces, anything on any label that has even the slightest bit of an ingredient that reads "Partially Hydrogenated soybean oil, cottonseed oil or any kind of oil" I'm in the bathroom dying with diarrhea, throwing up my guts and so wiped out I'm exhausted. It's like someone poisoned me. These are trans fats. It's not and I repeat IT'S NOT YOUR GALL BLADDER it's the makers of cheap rich fatty foods that put too much fat into our systems all at once. Our gall bladders work but sometimes not that well. If anyone is as overloaded as we can be. it's just too much fats. Too many trans fats. Trans fats are created when manufacturers decide to use lard instead of real cream to create a fake cream such as the fillings of oreos and such to make them seem creamy but instead wer'e ingesting nothing more that lard. It's not real cream it's just lard. And our bodies can't take all that fat. Doctors have been making a great deal of money removing our gall bladders when in fact...............they've been doing the job just fine, just manufacturing companies have been getting by on c**p for food and our bodies are suffering due to it. And Doctors are dishonest about the reasons. Ladies, it is all fat related. Stop everything and read everything that says "Parially hydroginated soybean oils or any other kind of hydroginated oils and I guarantee in a few months your symptoms will stop if not immediately. But you've got to educate yourself on where ALL the hydrogenated oils are, they can be in your ceareal, your coffee creamers, heck even in the stuff you put in your meat loaf and spagetti to make it flavor better. It's all in flavored coffees and a lot of ice creams and cookies, cakes and sweets. Get all of these out of your diet and many of your symptoms will disappear. underthetornado

I'm 19 years old. I first started getting these pains just this year in about March. My heart raced really fast so i got an ECG done and was hooked up for over 2 hours in a hospital, they said go home your fine.
After i'd left i had such sharp stabbing pains i was stuck in bed all day and night. After it went away for a few months i thought it was ok then it came back just 3 months later. Same thing went to the hospital then went home with nothing found. The sharp pains were worse and more around my left breast and towards the lower left ribs and in the middle of each breast. The pains lasted longer for a few days and my doctor said they didnt know what it was but it might be indigestion. Its not indigestion because i took medication for it , and it didnt help. Its come back again but worse again so fingers crossed today the doctor can tell me what it is!
I dont think it would be stress as i work as a register operator and don't do schooling anymore. heart scans showed my heart was fine and healthy but still it races at odd times (sometimes caffeine can make it race fast too), blood tests also showed nothing was wrong but i did have low vitamin D which i'm on tablets for now.
Lucky im not the only one with these problems though!

I might have an answer. I have the same problem and I'm 20. If you're overweight, eat fatty and/or acidic foods, and don't exercise on a regular basis, then it's possible that its GERD/Heartburn. If you don't have any of the above problems, it could just be gas. If none of this applies to you, see your doctor for furthur tests.
