Hello. I have some thyroid problems. I use amiodarone for preventing AF and I have read somewhere that amiodarone can cause hypothyroidism. I would like to know if I should avoid amiodarone and ask my doc for another drug. What would you suggest me? Thanks for answering. I will appreciate it.
Hello. Amiodarone can interfere with thyroid function as far as I know. You should report this to your doctor. It isn’t necessarily that your doc will change your drug. He may introduce to your treatment some thyroid supplements. Amiodarone is very important drug for preventing AF. It is more effective than sotalol or propafenon. That is why avoiding it won’t be a solution. In any case, you will discuss this with your doctor. I hope everything will be all right. Bye!
It is well known that amiodarone has some unpleasant side-effects. However, it is also the most effect antiarrhythmic drug. If you can tolerate the side-effect, you should continue taking it.
If not, you should ask your doctors for some other options such as new version of amiodarone or ablation.
