I get shoulder pain as soon as I take one drink of alcohol, the more I drink it intensifies, it will go away after about an hour. I've never found out why this happens so I just don't drink very much. It does cause a great deal of pain for the hour it occurs. I would love to find out why this happens

This has been happening to me for 2 years. I am 5'10", 130lbs and 40 years old (although not much of a drinker, I have a lot of years of consuming alcohol under my belt with no issues!). It hits me like a freight train with zero warning, going from totally fine to immediately agonizing pain in seconds. The results are similar to lifting something that is WAY too heavy for me and throwing my back/neck out as a result... yet I can be sitting completely still with no such exertion in recent history. This can happen literally with one or two sips of a drink, or it can happen when I'm on my second or third drink... no rhyme or reason noted. I feel deep, nearly-immobilizing pain in my shoulders, arms and chest, also a little lower between my shoulder blades, and/or in my lower back. The best thing I can compare the pain to is intense heartburn. The difference in my pain versus others' accounts though is that I can actually rub it out by digging into my muscles in the reactive area (I am immediately aware of the affected spots when touched). It's like there's literally a twisted knot in the muscles and I can locate it very quickly. It hurts like heck when I do that but I can tell immediately that if I do it long enough (2-5 minutes) the pain will cease. I have not noted which alcohol I drink when this happens. I would LOVE to know what causes this rare ailment.

I have been having this for several years. after drinking, usually the next day, I get cramp in the back of my right shoulder. it radiates up and into the back of my neck and then up behind my ear. occasionally I feel like I'm getting an ear ache. the pain always stays on the right side of my body. no medication works to take it away. often it lasts the whole day. and usually I waste the whole day to feeling terrible ! it isn't a hang over because it can start over something as simple as one drink. the best cure I've found is abstinence!

I've had it since I was 10yo. it happens when I drink any overly sugary drink. it's funny because I can EAT all the sugar I want, but if I drink even 1/3 of a cup of soda or processed sugar drink, I have the same symptoms as all of you. also, it is worse when those same drinks are mixed with alcohol. I think I found out what it is. it's either fructose malabsorption or fructose intolerance. this is the closest I've gotten in diagnosing it, and yes, various doctors have looked at me like I was crazy when I would describe it, but before I found out what fruct. malab. and fruct. intol. were. one more odd tidbit: when I drink diet drinks (diet coke, diet root beer, or mix my alcohol with diet sodas), I don't hurt one bit. when I eat cake or chocolate, etc., i'm fine. but when I eat fruit, i'm fine unless I eat a lot of it in quickly in one sitting. I describe it to my wife as having a cramp of the entire upper torso when I ingest liquid sugar.

I don't have a gallbladder and this happens to me immediately after I take my first sip or 2 of any type of alcohol except beer. My doctor mentioned GERD but I have taken medicines for that and it hasn't helped. I did noticed it's not as intense with the darker colored alcohol it's just the strangest thing people look at me like im crazy when i tell them. wish i knew what was causing it!!

Thought I was the only one with this problem!!!!I'M NOT CRAZY!!!!!! Decided to google this after talking to co-workers and hearing their similar stories with sweet alcohol drinks and chest, upper back and neck pain/tightness with sweating. Mine started years ago, and seemed to only happen when I had an empty stomach and drank something high in sugar (not just alcoholic drinks- but usually a wine cooler or other acidic drink due to mostly drinking diet sodas if any). Doctor misdiagnosed me with ulcer, but found out later my gallbladder was full of stones. I had hoped the episodes would stop when that was removed, but not so. Mine seems to improve when I eat something immediately before drinking something acidic, and has never happened with beer. The times I have vomited due to pain, it is 100% stomach bile. Because my gallbladder wasn't working for years, and it is absent now, therefore, it cannot absorb the excess stomach bile (produced by liver from my understanding). I can't help but to think it has something to do with excessive stomach bile and sugar, or maybe stomach bile in relation to sudden sugar intake. I really hope I can find out what is causing this, cuz it is quite painful when it occurs. Again, only seems to happen on empty stomach with acidic or high sugar alcoholic drinks????
