has any1 been sick after drinking and prior to getting the puffy eyes?

i have puffy eyes and a slight rash over my face, but mainly my cheeks.

i think it is the force of being sick brings a rush of blood to the head and thats were the rash comes from, pressure of blood rushing to the head...the puffy eyes might also be due to the pressure...

but the puffy eyes and rash might be due to something else and i was just sick at the same time...

Well, maybe I can help. First of all there is a medical condition called dandruff, but in medical terms its known as seborrhea (this is essentially only on the scalp).
As far as the eyes go (and probably the skin), you're having a reaction to the alcohol. It's doubtful that dehydration is affecting just one eye. As far as styes go, they may clear up in a week, but there's a close partner to a hordeolum called a chalazion. A chalazion is a chronic "stye" that's not painful. It does give a lump though and looks pretty similar to the dreaded stye.
It's quit possible that your suffering from a gluten sensitivity. If so, your immune system may be causing all the sx's your noticing.

Hope that gives you guys more to think about!

My right eye only swells up/ goes puffy after drinking, but i think it depends what i drink, and although i have been drinking for years it has only started in the last month or so. Previous to that i had 2 eye infections over the 3 previous months and attended eye casualty with the second one cos got worse after 3 days antibiotics. Dr said i was allergic to antibiotic and gave me steroid eye drops instead. But my vision is sometime affected too, and it becomes quite blurry. Strangely, i normally drink a bottle of wine (red or rose) in the house ( stressed mum of 3!) 5 nights a week ( work other 2!). But!!!!- am just back from weekend wedding party and only drank bacardi and coke __ GUESS WOT? ___eye never swoll once! Tonight i've had just one glass of red wine and eye swollen already! Any one else noticed this? Will miss my wine if this is the cause!x

Great i have found a page and am not alone, but no one seems to know yet what causes it.

i am suffering at the moment, and it is sore and achy, am using eye drops but normally makes my eye sting more and water.

after a good night sleep it tends to go away, have never been to docs about it, as it is very random, sometimes it can happen weekly, ( when i drink) or sometimes i can go a few weeks without it happening.

i drink lager and white wine, as at first i thought i was intolerance to how they brew the lager or something, but have also had it after drining white wine.... am baffled, and dosnt make you look to good the next day............. so any cures etc, please post

Yes, I'm also glad that I'm not alone in my mysterious drunken eye swellings.

I was at this wild party on Halloween and woke up the next morning with my left eye completely swollen and no idea how it had happened. Hopefully somebody can find some answers.

I have been wondering for years why this happens to me. I am older and have always drank alcohol. The first time this happened to me was after someone's 30th birthday where of course we were drinking all night long. Unfortunately I woke up and my eye was stinging as though I scratched it and it took a day or so to get back to normal.
I have not drank like that in a very long time, but once in a while if I drink even to much wine I wake up with that eye pain. At first I thought I must rub my eye in my sleep but the pain is very consistent each time and almost feels like I have scratched it in the same place.
I will keep checking back on this site to see if anyone comes up with any answers.

I just found this forum so I apologize if I'm replying to an old thread. For the last 2 years, I'm 38, almost every time I drink a little too much my left upper eyelid swells up bad. Anything over 4 beers or 2 glasses of wine causes the swelling which usually occurs mid to late morning the next day and sometimes stays swelled for the entire day. It's always accompanied by a headache as well. I never had this problem up until 2 years ago and my drinking habits have been the same. The eyelid swelling is not minor, I would probably scare the hell out of you if you saw me in the supermarket! It's nasty, meaning I usually don't even work when it happens. I'm not looking for any diagnoses or recommendations here. I just noticed this site and wanted to contribute. Beer, wine and brandy all cause this. I haven't tried other types of alcohol because I think this is a pretty good sign that I should quit drinking excessively to begin with anyway.

Actually, I realized when I drink vodka my eyes get soo puffy.... So, I need to stay away from that... Also, it doesnt matter what you drink the day after becuase your eyes will be puffy for a while so even if you try something different. I think the best thing to do is not drink at all until that puffiness goes away.... I'm allergic to vodka.... I'm okay with that. I will just stick with my red wine...[

Eyes

Alcohol causes the tiny blood vessels on the surface of the eye, called the sclera, to become dilated and inflamed, resulting in bloodshot eyes. Heavy drinking depletes the body of the nutrients needed for eye health and consequently can lead to a condition known as alcoholic optic neuritis. This can impair eyesight and, in time, lead to blindness.

Optic Neuritis

Facts:

Certain nutrients such as Fish Oil, MSM Eyedrops, Serraflazyme and other nutrients may help recovery from Optic Neuritis and preserve vision. Some research indicates that daily use of Microcurrent Stimulation may help preserve vision as well.
Overview:

Optic neuritis refers to swelling or inflammation of the optic nerve. The optic nerve allows you to see by carrying images from your retina to your brain. The optic nerve is like a cable of electrical wires or nerve fibers. Each wire carries a part of the visual information to the brain. If some or all of the nerve fibers become inflamed and do not function properly, vision becomes blurred. With optic neuritis, the optic nerve becomes swollen and the nerve fibers do not work properly. Vision can range from near normal to very poor depending on the number of inflamed nerve fibers.

Various diseases and conditions may cause optic neuritis. In many cases, however, the cause of optic neuritis is not known. It is often associated with diseases causing demyelination (a loss of the protective myelin layer of the the nerve) of the optic nerve. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the disease most often associated with optic neuritis. It is not uncommon to have an episode of optic neuritis prior to being diagnosed with MS. In fact, optic neuritis is often the initial sign of MS. Some people, especially children, develop optic neuritis following a viral illness such as mumps, measles or a cold. In others, optic neuritis may occur as a sign of a neurologic disease affecting nerves in various parts of the body.
Symptoms:

The following symptoms of optic neuritis may not occur in all cases; however, they are the most common problems associated with the condition.

* Pain behind the eye with eye movement (more than 90% of patients)
* Tender, sore eye
* Mild to severe decrease in central vision, or central blind spot
* Dull, dim vision (as if the lights were turned down)
* Blurred or decreased vision in one or both eyes (especially after exercising or taking a hot bath)
* Reduced color perception
* Decreased peripheral vision
* Fever
* Headache
* Nausea

The symptoms described above may not necessarily mean that you have optic neuritis. However, if you experience one or more of these symptoms, contact your eye doctor for a complete exam.
Conventional Treatment:

Fortunately, most people recover normal vision without any treatment of optic neuritis. For some people with significant vision loss, treatment with high doses of corticosteroids given intravenously may hasten visual recovery. Optic neuritis characteristically improves over a period of days to weeks. For some, a complete recovery may take months

Since the Optic Neuritis Treatment Trial (ONTT), doctors have discovered that treating patients with intravenous steroid medication (but not oral steroids) reduces the risk of developing MS later on. This finding is very significant since approximately 50% of those who experience an initial occurrence of optic neuritis will develop MS. While this treatment has little if any impact on vision, it is important for overall health.

I just found this thread. I too suffer from a swollen right eyelid after drinking. Looks like I was punched in the face. It has been happening for the last year now. I haven't changed anything in my drinking habits. So after a night of drinking with friends it will hit me hard the next day. Can sometimes take 2 days to go down. Alway in right eye. Never had these problems through my 20's. Now that I'm 33, it seems like it came out of nowhere. I'm a beer drinker, but may give that up if I can't find a solution. I might try liquor to see the results. I'm wondering if it is a food allergy...maybe glueten/wheat...something along those lines. It's just very perplexing as to why it has started now after many years of exposure to alcohol.

My upper left eye lid is sore (it feels like just under the outside of the eye socket) after a two day drinking bender...I think it has to be either some irritation of the eye due to blood vessels swelling up from the alcohol OR it's likely due to the fact that I rubbed my eye without paying attention because I was drunk and it got slightly infected. I guess it could also be if my eye dried out while drinking and I my body didn't blink enough because I was drunk and I didn't rid my eye of the dust and stuff - that's probably what it is...minor infection due to your body not blinking enough when you get drunk.
