So...just an update: 11 weeks after my baby was born my fingers and hand joints are completely back to normal! I know there were some concerns of RA and permanent stiffness but no worries, ladies! For lack of a better diagnosis, it IS just a "pregnancy symptom," probably due to a combination of the increased fluid around your joints (there are LOTS of them in your hands and feet!) and the hormone that relaxes them (so your body can stretch out for carrying and delivering your LO). I was really concerned during my pregnancy because i'm a professional musician and i make my living playing guitar and piano...so stiff little fingers are NO good. But, like i said, after baby my hands are back to normal and no more pain or stiffness... It DID take a fair amount of time, though. Around week 7 post-baby is when i noticed they were starting to let up. My feet, on the other hand, though they are no longer swollen and constantly achey, they do still get sore if i'm on them for too long. This could be a "symptom" of my incredible weight gain (60lbs!) though. We'll see if the pain subsides as i get this weight off... Good luck, girls! Mommyhood is AMAZING!!!!! I know you'll think so too :)

Oh my..I am so glad I found this page. I was starting to think I was loosing my mind. My sister tried to warn me about the little things in her pregnancy but this never happened to her. I am 32 and 6 months pregnant with my first baby. It takes me almost 20 min. to get out of bed in the morning my hands and feet hurt so bad. Once I get up and start moving it isnt so bad but at first my hands are almost numb and hurt so bad. My feet are swelling but my hands not so much. The hands just hurt alot. Thank you so much for sharing it really helps alot. Good luck with your pregnancy. All the best!!!

I'm so glad to hear that this is normal and just due to fluid build up and hormones. It freaked me out because i am so young!  I'm due in a little over a week and can barely make my hands into a fist (especially in the morning), and it is very hard to type and write with a pen. I'm only 22 and i literally feel like a 70 year old woman with arthritis!  Luckily this is not too abnormal and hopefully it will return to normal after baby arrives:)

Hi,
I do think this is a hormone thing, but be aware that sometimes this does not immediately go away after the baby arrives or even shortly thereafter. I am 13 and 1/2 mos. postpartum and still have a small degree of the arthritic stiffness, mainly upon sleeping. It is going away more gradually for me, guess I am unlucky enough to be an outlier! So don't be alarmed if it takes several months to dissapate. Good luck!

I am so relieved to read that I'm no the only one with sore knuckles and joints.  I am now 30 weeks pregnant with twin boys and I too was alarmed when i could barely move my hands in the morning and now feel the pain through out the day.  Lets hope it goes away after birth... as with the rest of the aches and pains :)

Good luck to you all and best wishes for healthy babies and mommies!

I wish there was more feedback on here that it does go away post partum. In the meantime though i will up mu fluids and maybe try apple cider vinegar.

It does go away eventually! Since delivering my first child, i've had a several friends who've been pregnant and delivered as well. Not all of them experienced the joint pain, but of those who did, 100% reported that they felt relief after the baby was a few weeks old. On average, i'd say about 6-10 weeks postpartum. My joint issue started to get better around 7 weeks after i delivered and after about 10 was completely gone. Hope this helps...cuz doctors won't! lol :)

I see that this last past is over a year old, but it's so stance that i found this forum. About a week ago while i was in Mexico, i woke up with the joint of my left index finger extremely stiff & painful. Almost as if i had wacked it on something really hard. It still hasn't resolved so here i am looking it up, & this us the only site i found where others have similar symptoms. Here's the weird party. I just find out that I'm pregnant! I never imagined it could be related, but here everyone has this going on, but obviously much farther along, when swelling might become an issue. Is it possible this is what I'm experiencing? Is literally only one joint, but it also feels somewhat better throughout the day. I'm starting to get freaked out.

Very glad to hear this is normal. I am pregnant with twins. About the 34th week this lovely symptom began to occur. Like the others have said, it seems toaffect the whole body, but hands and feet are the worst. My father died from complications of RA. I bring this up, because some people above stated it runs in their family and the were scared. I wanted to pass on that there is a test that the doctor can give to check and see if you have it or not. Luckily, mine came back negative.

I am doing the same thing... I am due in a week and 4 days and still working from 12-7 all day on my feet on a concrete floor.. recently the pains in my hands and feet have gotten to where they continuesly wake me up through the night.. my fingers are almost impossible to bend and my knuckles are literally locking up, if I close my hand to make a fist it is very difficult to reopen it... and holy cow, the pain in the arches of my feet and heels is unbearable by the end of the day and to first walk on them in the mornings is dreadful...

I had the same issues - couldn't make a fist and had extremly sore knuckles especially in the morning at late pregrancy (started around 38th week). Now it has been almost 3 months after my delivery but still I have the same issues. Though the pain is slightly weaker on my knuckles but still I can't make a fist especially in the morning. Is there anyone who got better completely after the delivery? If so, how long did it take and any recommendation to a fast recovery?

This is happeneibg to me too. On my left hand. I used to experience joint paon before my pregnancy. But this feels like i injured my self and I know I didn't. It feels like a sprainnor maybe arthritis. I am going to take some celery seed tea as that relieves all inflamation. I just hadnt gotten around to it. It good to know that is has someth8ng to do with this relaxin stuff. It doesnt look visibly swollen and doesn't throb or feel hot.
