okay i started getting these about four years ago. the first time i got one was after i had a bowl of ramen noodles. lol. i thought it was my heart.
i didn't get it again for a year or so then one night i had three or four happen within a one hour period. i went into complete freakout mode and called the ambulance. i ended up being diagnosed with a peptic ulcer, stomach erosion and GERD.
i get them now every once and a while.
sometimes they happen when i lean over.
i have started coughing to stop it. it's like it happens, i cough and it's over. no heart disturbance. but BIG BIG burps afterwards! then right where the spasm happens (under my sternum where my stomach is) feels icky. i get bloated and gassy.
i really believe it's gas. i do also have anxiety and i just had one a while ago and am semi anxious about it (probably from reading about heart issues) but i can feel bubbles forming in that area right now that are causing me to burp and pass gas out the other end.
i think anxiety causes our stomachs to go into overdrive, then we get gas buildup and these spasms happen at the bottom of our esophagus. i've made a habit to feel my heart after one happens and there is no skipped beats, or racing situation.
my conclusion is that it's gastric related. for me. and for some others probably. i'm sure some people feel two different things (that can be either gastric or cardiac). but i know for myself i bend over at my desk, eat something carby or gas forming, feel low level anxiety, get the spasm, cough, start burping then get stomach bloating and general icky feeling.
hope this helps some.

and the feeling specifically is like when you get the 'air knocked out of you' but without being punched lol. it's NOT painful at all, only lasts a couple of seconds and never makes me dizzy, faint or anything else like that.

Look up nutrients needed to stop muscle spasms. If that doesn't work you probably have mitrovalve prolapse. It's not harmful, just awkward feeling. Trust me, you would know if you were having a heart attack.

i'd like to add i FINALLY went to the doctor tonight for this issue as i was having it every few minutes tonight, the worst in my life... it started after i ate some pizza and had a cigarette. anyways the doctor diagnosed me with esophogeal spasms and put me on a PPI 2x a day and zantac 150mg 2x a day for three weeks.

I found this site about 2 weeks ago by just typing into the search" area "funny feelings in chest". It was that easy!!! Anyway, my symptoms were as another person said, like a squirrel running around in my body. I took one person's advice and increased my calcium intake, and added a magnesium tablet.
Lo and behold - my "squirrel" is gone. That's all I had to do! I know I am luckier than others on this site, but I feel very blessed to have found such a simple answer. My daughter, a nurse, said the calcium acts like a Tum of sorts, and my problem was probably a minor acid reflux problem that I didn't realize I had. I hope this info works for others.
