My Dad and I both have the same problem. The doctor diagnosed it as esophageal spasms that kick the heart out of rhythm. My father has had attacks so bad that he passed out from them.  The doctor put us on proton pump inhibitors. The only thing that works is cut the sodas, caffeine, high acid foods and go on a very healthy diet. The doctor also says cut out the chocolate and mints, but I don't eat much of that anyway. It takes about two or three weeks before the symptoms completely disappear.

One more thing, Milk also causes acid reflux if you have a sensitivity to the enzymes in it. I have this issue as well.

Guys I too had these feelings that you all describe, but I don't get them anymore or very rarely. I had ekg, holter moitor and they said I was fine. So my doctor started treating me for acid indigestion and sour stomach due to my stomach creating to much acid. He put me on FAMOTIDINE 20mg. I take one in the morning before breakfast, and one at night. I don't get the spasm feelings anymore which can take my breath away at times, leave me light headed etc...Hopefully this helps you all.

It is really not good when you get a Heart Monitor to have with you to take recordings of your heart and then end up not having the symptoms at all. Now that is just a booo... I feel you. I have been having several spasms right on the lower center of my chest....and it feels awful because it is something new to me. Aside from the spasm feeling it also feels like if the air was being sucked out of me while the spasm occurs. At times I have it one after another withing a minute or so. I don't know what this is but the feeling is just so scarry. I also am hoping that it has nothing at all to do with my heart. I've asked my doctor several times for that thyroid test yet he keeps on telling me that I'm too young and that's all I hear. What is weird is that the several times that I have had to go to the ER....everything comes out good but they don't really tell you everything you need to know. I just found out after requesting my medical records that my pottassium levels have always been low yet they failed to tell me....they would just give me a small package mixed with water(pottassium) and send me right back home. I'm finally getting the heart monitor in a couple of weeks...I really hope that the symptoms I'm having occur while on this monitor to see if something will pop up. See the problem with Hospitals, clinics etc. is that every doctor is different and will opiniate based on what they conclude that could be much different than that of another doctor. Hang in there and I really would like to hear how it goes.

Mine went away when I backed off the caffine and did someone exercise. I also took prylosec for 14 days and it helped. I think mine was a irrated esophagus and stress. I layed off the spicey foods and didn't eat as much.

okay i started getting these about four years ago.  the first time i got one was after i had a bowl of ramen noodles.  lol.  i thought it was my heart.

i didn't get it again for a year or so then one night i had three or four happen within a one hour period.  i went into complete freakout mode and called the ambulance.  i ended up being diagnosed with a peptic ulcer, stomach erosion and GERD.

i get them now every once and a while.

sometimes they happen when i lean over.

i have started coughing to stop it.  it's like it happens, i cough and it's over.  no heart disturbance.  but BIG BIG burps afterwards!  then right where the spasm happens (under my sternum where my stomach is) feels icky.  i get bloated and gassy.

i really believe it's gas.  i do also have anxiety and i just had one a while ago and am semi anxious about it (probably from reading about heart issues) but i can feel bubbles forming in that area right now that are causing me to burp and pass gas out the other end.

i think anxiety causes our stomachs to go into overdrive, then we get gas buildup and these spasms happen at the bottom of our esophagus.  i've made a habit to feel my heart after one happens and there is no skipped beats, or racing situation.

my conclusion is that it's gastric related.  for me.  and for some others probably.  i'm sure some people feel two different things (that can be either gastric or cardiac).  but i know for myself i bend over at my desk, eat something carby or gas forming, feel low level anxiety, get the spasm, cough, start burping then get stomach bloating and general icky feeling.

hope this helps some.

oh and i just wanted to add that the spasm feeling happens RIGHT before the burping and general stomach symptoms, it's like an intro to a night filled with ugh.

and the feeling specifically is like when you get the 'air knocked out of you' but without being punched lol. it's NOT painful at all, only lasts a couple of seconds and never makes me dizzy, faint or anything else like that.

Look up nutrients needed to stop muscle spasms. If that doesn't work you probably have mitrovalve prolapse. It's not harmful, just awkward feeling. Trust me, you would know if you were having a heart attack.

I found this site about 2 weeks ago by just typing into the search" area "funny feelings in chest".  It was that easy!!!  Anyway, my symptoms were as another person said, like a squirrel running around in my body.  I took one person's advice and increased my calcium intake, and added a magnesium tablet.

Lo and behold - my "squirrel" is gone.  That's all I had to do!   I know I am luckier than others on this site, but I feel very blessed to have found such a simple answer.   My daughter, a nurse, said the calcium acts like a Tum of sorts, and my problem was probably a minor acid reflux problem that I didn't realize I had.  I hope this info works for others.
