I do drink caffeinated tea, but not necessarily every day. I don't drink much soda at all, maybe one a month, maybe.

I had this problem many years ago and could not make a fist in the morning - very painful. I have found that if you alter your diet and do not eat salt, sugar or packaged foods but only whole natural foods, the problem disappears. Every now and again I will eat sugar and sure enough it comes back! Eat healthly all the time and hopefully this will help you as well! :-D

Hello. The last reply was obviously posted by a chiropractor. There are no proven benefits of going to one and if popping your joints accelerates the onset of mulitple types of arthritis, how will popping your back and neck joints be good? As far as having a high salt diet. Think of this.. Everything you eat from a restaurant or out of a can is very high in sodium as it is used as a preservative. Try eating as much fresh foods and even frozen as possible and drink at least 64 oz of water a day as this is how we expel sodium from our bodies. If you go to a doctor for high blood pressure he will give you a diuretic which will make you urinate more often and will make you thirsty.
It seems as though modern living is the biggest problem with our health anymore... Imagine that

I am only 14 & a female! I have woken up every morning for about the past 2 months will swollen fingers and my fingers, ankles and knees get very painful! I have no idea why this is happening to me. It is also happening to my mom! She's 45...I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with age. My ankles usually get swollen when I'm on my period & the pain in my fingers and other joints gets extremely painful! The other morning I woke up and couldn't get out of bed because I was so stiff and in so much pain. I regularly take 2 Ibprofen, I mean just about EVERY single day, sometimes multiple times a day. My mom is going to take me to the doctors sometime soon. They tested her for countless things and still found nothing... I hope they find something curable when they do my blood test. I have been dealing with joint pain for about 4 years already! I'm only 14, I shouldn't have to deal with this....When I find out what I have I will come back to this site and post!

I believe that most of the people suffering from swelling hands, feet and legs should see a chiropractor. Many nerves are pinched in the spine area due to a number of reasons. If you go over your "normal" daily routines and see some changes you have made (such as do harder labor or vicarious exercises), you will see the changes in your body one way or another. A chiropractor can help aline hips or pelvis areas.
This kind of swelling also happen to me, F/53, in the past and after visiting a chiropractor for a couple of months, I saw the difference.

I am 32 weeks pregnant and I just started experiencing the same thing. I had the sneaking suspicion that it had something to do with eating out at night, and too much salt, i.e. sodium. Well, I'll back track, I've been experiencing the same thing as in stiffness in my hands when I wake up. For me I feel no pain, so for others, it could be carpal tunnel. But, I know that's not the case with me, so I looked up the amount of sodium that is good for a day. It is 2300 mg. And any processed or fast food will have a lot of sodium, even if you add no table salt to your meals. One slice of medium pizza has 560. And I ate two. So right there that's over 1000. Then there's the healthy burrito at taco bell, very few calories, 1100 mg of sodium. I was just diagnosed with gestational diabetes so I've had to get the nutrition guides from places to check out carb content and calorie intake. Both are within good ranges, but the sodium is off the charts. That's my guess of what's causing the stiffness and swelling but no pain. By the way, I don't think the stiffness is associated with diabetes because I've had that for a few weeks, and no probs, just when I've stopped to pick up the "healthy" burrito for dinner. And I've always slept with my hands above my head! Hope this helps, I'm not a Dr or anything, but I was just surprised by the numbers in one small item of takeout, not to mention one meal! Which would in and of itself exceed the daily recommended amount of sodium.

Recently starting getting swollen fingers in the morning, waking with fingers in curled/bent position feeling fat/swollen & having difficulty in opening up my hand & straightening my fingers.   I am female, 55 (meno), very active/healthy & take no Rx meds.  After talking with a male co-worker who has Krohns, have concluded that it is probably associated with something called "trigger finger" (see description below) due to an accompanying lump.  Apparently, some fingers are more susceptible than others (it can happen in toes too) & it is usually is more noticeable in the morning, subsiding during the day.  Maybe it's like Edema of the hands & feet.  I figured excess salt in my diet could be a factor, as well as overuse of my hands (& feet) due to my very active job.  From the Mayo Clinic website--

Trigger finger is a condition in which one of your fingers or your thumb catches in a bent position. Your finger or thumb may straighten with a snap — like a trigger being pulled and released. If trigger finger is severe, your finger may become locked in a bent position.

Often painful, trigger finger is caused by a narrowing of the sheath that surrounds the tendon in the affected finger. People whose work or hobbies require repetitive gripping actions are more susceptible. Trigger finger is also more common in women and in anyone with diabetes.

Treatment of trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, varies depending on the severity.

This might sound like it's too simple to be true, but I believe found what was causing my still/painful fingers.  I just started taking fish oil soft gel caps from Spectrum recently. Shortly after beginning taking daily doses, I started waking up in the night unable to bend my fingers because they were still and hurt. This was a new experience for me. For one reason or another I stopped taking the fish oil for a while and the problem went away. I made the connection and re-started taking the oil just to experiment.  The problem returned after a couple of days. I've been off now for several weeks and no recurrent problem.  The oil?  The soft gel caps?  I don't know. But I'm staying away from both for now.

I am ,erm over 40 yrs of age (drat !) , and regularly ,but not always, wake up with a swollen finger or fingers and they are very stiff and cannot close hand with them. As morning goes on they loosen up. I do a lot of typing with the fingers on computer keyboard so it is likely that this is a type of repetitive strain injury (RSI) but not sure.

Hello everyone! Im a female 23 yrs old and wake up with the swollen finger feeling every day. Like others, once I'm up and moving around it goes away, which obviously points to circulation. Another symptom I have is that I will wake up and my pointer, middle and ring finger will be 100% numb. I also noticed that this only happens when i sleep on my sides. So when I force myself to sleep on my back it does not happen. I think some how when you sleep on your side you crush or squish a vein or artery, and the person who posted about the chiropractic exam pretty much confirmed this was true for me. Of course this does not rule out any other major problems, but I think, at least for me, it's all about the way you sleep. Thanks everyone I hope this helps!

I had one middle finger couple years ago give me problems and could not open it fully and was stuck in curved shape. Turned out it was something they call "trigger finger" (look it up). A kind of knot gets caught in the tunnel it goes through and gives a cliking sound. I had a steroid injection direct into it by very good doctor and have not had a problem with that finger, but do now get the odd finger that wont open in morning and is painful but few hours after rising in morning and hot water on it etc it become normal again. Have feeling may be something to do with tendons as it really is painful if I try and open it, or catch it accidentally.

Just to put it out there, I am NOT a Dr and can't diagnose any problems, however I am a Licensed Massage Therapist and it sounds like what I see come through my office, A LOT! When vertebrae are out of alignment, it pulls on every single muscle that attaches there as well as the surrounding muscles and can also be pinching on the nerves (giving you that annoying tingling/numbing feeling, either in the pinky finger or the thumb depending on which nerve is involved). So your neck muscles and all the way down into your arm can become very tight. When your muscles become really tight, they actually swell a bit and when they swell, it makes it harder for the circulation to move in the way that it should. Proper appointments to the Chiro to get adjustments and regular massage (every 2-3 weeks for the first couple of sessions and then ever 4-6 weeks for "maintenance") can really help to reduce the pain and swollen feeling that you're getting.
