Like I said go on a gluten free food plan for at least a week and see if you symptoms improve. There are plenty of excellent resources here on the Web explaining the subject even more. Amazon. Com has some good books as well. Not everone gets the same symptoms, but it's worth the effort to try and it won't cost you a insurance co pay or doctors visit. Hope this helps.

Good points!
Except the Chiropractor bit.. I am a chiropractor, and although I agree with most things you said, you are just as guilty of as the chiropractor talking about pinched nerves in the spine. (This is based on a philosophy, not science) You were clearly philosophising about "no proven benefits of going to see a chiropractor".
There are numerous proven benefits of going to see a chiropractor. Adjusting the spine however to treat swollen fingers in the morning has not been proven (and most likely never will be).
Further, "popping your joints" does not accelerate the onset of any type of arthritis. The risk factors of developing arthritis have been established as age, a family history of the condition, and previous accidents with hand, or a lifetime of working with your hands doing heavy labour.
Certain conditions relating to the neck, back, upper or lower limb have all responded to adjusting the spine. Does this mean you have to go to a chiropractor for the rest of your life 3 times a week? Of course not..
Finding the right chiropractor who is honest and scientifically based as a practitioner is your best bet.. One that knows the research on the condition and practices in an evidence-based approach may be best. At the same time many chiropractors have a high interest an knowledge in nutrition and would most likely suggest most of the points that you mentioned above if you stepped into their office with this question. Hope this helps in some fashion,
Dr. Thibert

Do you drink diet sodas or use Splenda of Sweet and Low, etc.? This could be the reason as it has been found to cause joint pain and swelling.

Hi I find the fact that both you and your mom have the same problem interesting. My wife (53) and I (61) started having the same type of problem and we eat very healthily but different foods. We are trying to identify what item/s could be the cause. Chicken (free range, I hope) is one item that we both eat a lot of. We use lemon juice to marinaded the chicken, we don't eat red meat. Do you eat lots of chicken?
