I'm glad to know that I'm not crazy or the only one with this problem. Just last night I finally connected quitting with the bloat. I have had bloating for a year or so before quitting smoking with horrible flatulence. My doctor attributed that to the change in my diet (becoming more healthy). At least that bloat would go away until I ate some of the wrong foods (certain things with high fiber). Digestive enzymes, probiotics, IBS pills helped some. I quit smoking 6 weeks ago and the bloat won't go away no matter what - I tell my husband that I'll constantly be 9 months pregnant and never give birth. I feel lucky that I at least don't have the flautlence like I did before (husband and kids about ran me out of the house). I can't even wear pants that button and zip. I can only wear elastic waist pants (sweats, etc). I have quit smoking quite a few times before and never had this bloat happen before, so this is something completely new. I have gone back to using enzymes, probiotics, and IBS meds, but they aren't working at all for this bloat. The only thing that I haven't tried which is listed in these posts is ginger. I will see about getting some to check out how they work. If thethat works, I'll post again with the info.

I actually thought I had some sort of disease as my distended belly became more and more pronounced starting in my second week 'clean'. Thank you all for confirming otherwise - I only found one reference to withdrawl symptoms including bloating in a booklet I read after I had turned my focus to intense exercising trying to get rid of it (in the process, relapsing and taking up smoking again in my third week). Am back on track and ready to stop smoking again, with guidance from you all. Only problem now is my social life is suffering because I can only drink three beers instead of six on a good night out! Granted, that should address the beer belly right there! Cheers.

It has only been a day and a half for me and I have a bulging belly so bad that I am in pain. My husband thinks I'm absolutely out of my mind but it seriously feels like I am in my sixth month of pregnancy after only quitting for 2 days. I wish at least there was a reasoning or a way to subside the symptoms????

I feel sick as hell. I'm only 21 years old, and I'd quit smoking for about 3 years, since I was 16 I'd stopped. Met a girl who wouldn't have it, and I'd never encountered the problem. After we'd split, I'd gone back home and had been under severe stress even if I was in denial. Father was passing away. My whole body had the shakes, very strong shakes. My digestive system went horrible. I wasn't throwing up, but suffered from just about everything else imaginable. I'd gone to doctors, and they wanted me to hop around hospital to hospital waiting 8 hours here and there. I couldn't take it, and started smoking again. With time, I'd gotten my body back under control.
Now I'd had a smoke a few weeks ago, and noticed wheezing, which was it for me. Forget that. I'm 21, I'm not going to be wheezing. Decided to get healthy, quit smoking, started working out, eating healthy. Now I'm at work, I feel like I'm going to throw up, I'm unbelievably bloated, and its been this way for a week or two.
My two questions are, these diets and pills, the activia and the meds, are they just for a little while, or have you had to stick with them? Is this diet permanently required I suppose I'm inquiring? And.. for myself who's a bit hard headed, should I be staying away from acids, or taking in more citrus and acidic foods?
(never been to this website before, hope my post is within guidelines)

Im 24 male, been smoking for 8 years and stopped for about 9 days now, Ive noticed that since 5 days ago, I have bloated out, I have been burping alot the burps are almost pressure directly from my stomach, when I am not burping, I have a constant sensation to burp, especially noticeable in the afternoons.
Overall, my stomach has more gas. I have a wet cough, with small brown specks in/ esp. mornings. and I feel like sh1t,
...but Im thinking clearer, I feel optimistic and am looking forward to my healthier future.

i'm 29, have been smoking over 10 years.. has been 3 weeks since i smoked...
have quit a few times before but this time i have the most terrible acid reflux, indigestion, bloat, gas and vomitting at night time.
I am taking Zyban, which I blamed at first (could be part of it) but affter reading all of this im beginning to think that maybe my digestive system is just not reacting well to me quitting.
I got some probiotics and am willing to try anything. Nobody seems to have any definitive answers, even here.
I'll check back if this stuff helps.

Thank you.Its great to hear I'm not the only one with the bloating. Because I'm not very big to begin with I felt like the doctor wasn't really listening. She said I fall into normal for my weight. I don't think gaining 30 lbs. just in your stomache is normal, or looking pregnant when youre not.I'm going to try some of the suggestions and see if they work because dieting and exercise does not.

>:( Hello, I stopped smoking 45 days ago and last week I got home from work and found my belly was growing larger and larger by the minute. My stomach is normal and flat but a pooch on the bottom. It grew to be larger than my breasts which are a size D. I littler y felt like I was 7 months pregnant again. After a couple of hours the stomach distention was gone and back to normal however, I felt as if I had eaten a huge Thanksgiving dinner but had not eaten anything for hours. I have gone to the doctor and that was a total waist of time. She did not examine me and told me to take Fiber daily and gas pills. She said that it had nothing to do with my not smoking. I totally disagree with her and think that she just does not have any information or just did not care. This is the first web site that I found that people are having the same problem as me. I hope it gets better soon because this really sucks but at least Im not smoking. Good luck

I'm going through this now. I have not smoked since jan. 17 2009 and I keep wanting to start again - I thought the bloating was weight gain as well. I do not want to spend money on some "miracle" pill that will not work, though. Is there another way to get rid of this bloating? If not, I may end up smoking again!

Suffered from same symptoms
I smoked for 6 years . Jan 1 st 2009 was my last cigarette. After quitting cigarettes for 9 weeks now had been experiencing severe bloating.
Symptoms: As soon as you wake up I felt good but just after one min my stomach is filled with gas . You go to loo freshen up and then I again go to loo this time it’s like dysentery with green sh*t and it smells like hell . You keep going to rest room or keep farting all through the day.
I am glad that I was not the only person who is facing the issue. So after going through the forum I though there was no cure and I had to revert back to smoking but some tips in the form did help me a lot .
I am following a strict diet since two days and I am really feeling better. I don’t know if it will last long or not but these strict diet may help a lot of people .
Morning: Once I wake up I will have at least one liter of water without brushing. Then cut few pieces of ginger very small and two two three garlic s . Crush them put them in boiling water. After few mins drink it and eat the garlic as well as ginger along with them. Take bath then have only oats meal ( No sugar if possible you can use honey) . Then two tea spoons of Apple cedar vinegar or just cedar vinegar in hot water mix honey for taste and drink it . Go for a 10-15 walks taking deep breaths.
Afternoon: Put some water in curds and mix it so that the curd is diluted. Cook some rice make it as soft as possible. ( I cup rice 3-4 cuts of water ) . Mix rice and diluted curs and eat it . Then two tea spoons of Apple cedar vinegar or just cedar vinegar in hot water mix honey for taste and drink it. Go for a 10-15 walks taking deep breaths.

I don’t know it’s been just two days since I began following this diet I am feeling better .Iwill keep the forum updated if i start facing the issue again or the condition improves or not .So though it might help other people who might be suffering these symptoms.
