I quit smoking 3 days ago. I weighed 105 pounds the day i quit. Within 24 hours, I could easily pass for a 7 month pregnant woman . . even my husband admits it. My stomach is distended past my boobs (and they are Ds). Has anyone found a way to relieve this? Im eating less than normal, working out more, and the pressure is just getting worse!! Is this fat or just some bloating reaction to quitting smoking? IM MISERABLE. Id rather die of a smoke related disease than suffer with this bloating for the next 40 years!!!

I to am really having problems with bloating, I have stopped smoking for 9 days now and was before this a normal size, right weight for my height etc however now I am massive, large distended stomach, which for the first time in my life overhangs my jeans and skirts. I look about 6 months pregnant and its getting me down, I have cut down on eating, doing more exercise but still my stomach is growing daily, its helpful to know I am not alone, but wish someone would be able to say "do this or take that" and it will all go away, and I will get back to my normal size.

I was 48 hours smoke free when it hit me - my stomach became so bloated I looked 9 months pregnant. I didn't eat anything out of the normal that day but I could feel myself getting bloated all day. When I came home from work I couldn't stand it any longer and went out to buy cigarettes. I smoked three. Now I'm miserable because of my bloated stomach and because I relapsed. I'm going to try to quit again and this time at least I'll know and be more prepared.

A friend just forwarded this to me, and like all of you with this insane unexplained complex problem, I am relieved to find out I am not crazy!
I've been a smoker for 15 years, quit for a month and a half, and started smoking again recently as my stomach was swollen pregnant like for the whole time and I was constantly constipated no matter what I ate or drank. I'm naturally quite skinny and couldn't understand where I was going wrong. I wasn't really putting on weight anywhere else, just a bloated painful swollen stomach. I tried so many different solutions, all sorts of laxatives, plenty of fibres in my diet, fruits, veggies, exercising, not eating. I have also tried probiotics (Probio7). I even went for colonic hydrotherapy and woke up the next day feeling worse and in pain. Doctors didn't really know what caused it, some said I might have IBS (if IBS why is this only happening when I don't smoke?), some it's the stress of stopping (I've been stressed many other times and this never happened!). Some say cigarettes are a laxative (so why is replacing cigarettes with other forms of laxatives not helping?) You would think that after a few weeks/months your body/stomach would start getting used to not being fed nicotine and you'd start feeling better rather than worse, doesn't seem fair...

After a month and a half, I couldn't take it anymore and had 2 cigarettes, I could literally see the swelling instantly going down! Now it's all back to normal but unfortunately I am smoking regularly again :-(

My hypnotherapist (who I used for quitting smoking) told me the bloating/pregnant like swelling was all caused by my "rebellious" side, the one that unconsciously doesn't want to quit smoking and that it was all in my head! Thanks to all of you I now know this is not "self-inflicted".

Friends who have quit, said all went back to normal after a couple of weeks, one after 2 months, matter of patience, might take longer for some depending how heavy a smoker you are and for how long. Another friend said to try "Coated Oil Of Peppermint Capsules". Some suggested to gradually reduce over a few weeksto ammaximum of 5 so that when you are ready to quit again, your body doesn't freak out so much.

One post on this site (dating back to 1997 though) said they went online to swansonvitamins and ordered digestive enzymes with bile, hydrochloric acid, and ultimate probiotic formula and 2 weeks later felt 100% better, most of the swelling was gone, no gas, no indigestion. As anyone tried this?

I will be trying the enzymes and the peppermint capsules very soon as intending to stop again after the summer and will definitely post my comments on here.

I'm truly sorry I cannot offer more help at this stage and hope to be able to very soon.

I have quit 7 months ago, when me and my wife found out that she was pregnant to our first child. She was a smoker as well, so the news was a good motive for both of us.

After beeing a smoker for 20 yrs, smoking on average 10-12 cigarettes a day, I found quitting much easier than what I thought it would be...at the beginning that is.

Here is a list of the changes I have noticed, some of which are things I have never heard about in anti-smoking campaigns:

1. Weight gain came almost instantly (well I was eating more, that is true) as I felt constantly hungry...I was alarmed when I saw that I was gaining like 1 kgr (approx.2 pounds) every second day. The situation stabilised within a couple of weeks, but I have only lost no more than 1kgr since then, even though my eating habbits are definitely better than when I was a smoker (when I had a fairly stable weight).

2. Irritability made me very active. I would clean the house, do gardening, go shopping...but I aso witnessed signs of road rage..and a general feeling that I was becoming something I did not like at all.

3. Bloating was something I experienced after the first month or so and it was the first time in my life that this happened. Excessive gas (flatulence and burping) appeared every second day almost for the past 6 months.

4. My gums have always been fairly healthy as I am trying to pay a visit to my dentist every 6 months. Soon after quitting smoking I experience bleeding, as my gums appeared to be more sensitive to brushing. Makes no sense!

5. Trying to convince myself that I was actually doing something positive for me and my family, I had my regular annual check-up a few days ago. I would expect that despite the weight gain, some things should have improved. Hell no. Compared to the last 5 years that I did compare the results to, I have increased blood sugar, lower HDL and a higher LDL. So next time you read that quitting smoking can increase your HDL by 10% within a few days, think twice.

I still believe that over time, things should be getting back to normal...the thing is, I cannot think of how. All experts talk about withdrawal symptoms that last for a few days, or even a few weeks. It has been 7 months now and I am still trying to convince myself I am doing the right thing. After all it is common sense that the human body was not designed to inhale thousands of toxic chemicals...but someone has to try and explain the side-effects of quitting too, so that we do not feel we should be going back to cigarettes.

Right now I remember something I used to say to a friend of mine...you don't drink, you don't smoke, you don't stay out late...good for you..you will die perfectly healthy!

Oh boy, I really hope it's worth it.

every time i quit smoking it feels like my stomach is going to explode, especially right after i eat. and it only takes a puff or two to make it all go away. so for years i thought that's what addiction was. then i tried fennel. It doesn't work as good as smoking but it does work & really quick too. you can eat the seeds straight or buy them in pill form at a vitamin shop. i'd still rather be smoking, but i guess i can live with this

Hi all,

Addicted to "the cure", I used nicotine gum and lozenges pretty much nonstop for 15 years. I am a 47 year old female. The last time I quit cold turkey, I experienced the bloating (in my stomach and thighs) to the point that I couldn't close my pants, and I became extremely depressed. I lasted 72 days but the bloating and depression never went away, so I picked up again.

Here's what's different this time - I don't know if just one of these things did it or whether it's a combination, but I'm not bloating or depressed, and it's going on three weeks.

1) I got a prescription for Wellbutrin - which probably stopped the depression (300 mg per day)

2) I've been drinking Three Leaves Ultra Slimming Tea every other day before bed, which has a mild laxative effect (there are several "slimming" teas out there)

3) The hardest one: I avoid or eliminate ALL sugar, flour and wheat as much as possible

I hope this helps someone else. I am so grateful I think the quit will stick this time.

Hey everyone-

Gosh thank goodness I am not the only one! I quit 2 weeks ago and noticed even the next day after not smoking I felt awful. My stomach is so bloated and uncomfortable. I don't know what to do to help. Its so full that it truly hurts so bad! It's very discouraging because I have smoked for 7 years and quite a small girl. I want to try to become a personal trainer also but now I feel like total c**p and it's making me want to pick up smoking again just so I don't feel this way. If anyone has solutions please let me know.

Thanks!

Thank goodness for this thread! So good to know it's not just me! I quit 2 and a half months ago and my body is completely alien to me now. I smoked for 25 years so I was expecting some issues but the symptoms are not going away, they are getting worse. I've put on weight of course but I allowed myself that the first few weeks, just concentrated on quitting. But the weight I've put on (I mean size really, I don't actually weigh myself) is strangely, unevenly distributed and not anything like how I put on some weight when I smoked. My stoach is so bloated it's ridiculous..I can't get into loads of trousers, I have major wind issues, heartburn and my bowel movements are all over the place. I have been eating really healthily the past few weeks, lots of fruit and veg and doing more exercise but it's not making any difference, my stomach is enormous. Now my gums are hurting aswell. I have asthma and I don't want to start smoking, I do feel the benefits in my lungs and breathing BUT I need to get back the body I used to have and be able to wear my clothes again!! I am going to try some of the remedies suggested here and I'll let you know how I get on.

I got online and googled "bloating after quitting smoking" and found this site. I am on day 8 of not smoking and as of day 2 I started bloating and also looked about 9 months pregnant. I am a skinny person so everyone thinks I am pregnant. Its humiliating. I have tried to stop smoking quite a few times now. This is the second time in a row I have bloated massively when I quit. Last time I quit for 2 months and never stopped bloating so I started smoking again and it immediately went away. First thing I do in the morning is take a shower and I can stand there and actually watch my stomach bloat...I haven't even eaten anything yet. I think quitting is not worth feeling this uncomfortable all the time. By the time dinner comes around I can't eat because the bloating starts to hurt so bad I don't want to move. I don't feel comfortable with myself again. Knowing some of you have gone to the doctor and they have not helped tells me I would be wasting my time. Am I doomed to smoke till I die just to feel comfortable in my own skin? Nothing I do helps the bloating.
