I am so glad I stumbled across this! I was beginning to think i was going crazy and that I was the only person this had happened to. I quit smoking 4 months ago after 25 years as a smoker, everything was going great and then suddenly it was like a phantom pregnancy at 43 years old! I knew that my metabolism would slow down but I was completely unprepared for this awful bloating. I was so fed up tonight  I very nearly walked in the pouring rain to the corner shop to buy a ten pack... I am so glad i didn't and instead decided to google the problem. I am going straight to the shops in the morning to try some of the remedies mentioned here and will give an update on whether any of them have helped, here,s hoping!

I quit cold turkey on Thursday and by Sunday evening, I was so bloated, gassy and sick to my stomach, keeping down water and mint tea felt like a feat of will power.  And I looked like I was in my third trimester - trust, I'm not pregnant.  I follow a paleo diet and I'm also a gym rat - both likely helped with a lot of other symptoms from my quit  - but weren't doing anything about the complete and utter shut down of my body's digestive system.

Anyways, it was gross.  I was gross.  Just, eww, gross.

Glad I googled bloat and quitting instead of using this as an excuse to cave.  Between the suggestions on this thread and some other good info on Chris Kessler's blog, I decided to try supplementing with Now's super enzymes (HCL with an assortment of digestive enzymes) and probiotics.  You take 600mg of HCL at the beginning of every meal, don't drink anything either during your meal or for one hour afterward so as not to further dilute your stomach acid.  The probiotics I think you can take whenever - I prolly should have gone for a food source like kombucha or kefir but... meh.  I was already taking magnesium before bed each night - it helps with constipation.   It's day two and I'm already seeing a significant reduction in bloating, I'm not farting anymore (yay!!!) and I can eat without wanting to die after.  I'm still retaining a bit of water but it's already so much better.

So, before reaching for a pack, give the digestive enzymes and a probiotic a try.

Im going through all of this! My husband who quit a year ago thinks im crazy. I look about 6 months pregnant, I feel like I cant breath after I eat and yea its kinda embarrassing to be in public. I'm so glad I found this thread. I'm only on day 16 now and it seems to only get worse every day. I'm going to get some of the enzymes but wondering if a flush would help as well, or if that would add to the problem.

Hi, thanks for this inspiring word of not starting to smoke again. I have smoked for 40 years and gave up just like that but I am looking 9 months pregnant, never use to have a stomach, will push through, just not use to be fat and uncomfortable

Have you tried anything? I have had this problem since I quit smoking last June. Omg. :( it was worse in the beginning but it seems to be starting again so I'm going to buy some enzymes and probiotics. I can't believe I suffered like this, thinking it was just me and it would go away. Ugh.. Horrible.

I have the bloating too and gas as well, but to want to die of a smoking related disease seems like a sad trade off.  Your body is reacting strongly, which is a sign how much the smoking affected you.  Your bloated feeling will go away, but you can assist by drinking teas or taking pills called digest-away, or a colon-cleansing pill, good for de-toxing and all natural.  Move, and start feeling good about your nicotine free body, free from smoke, and wasting your money on stinky butts.

Dear Doe, If you really stopped smoking, these symptoms would disappear by themselves.  How about the stench, and the gray skin from smoking?  Does your partner prefer that over a  flatter abdomen.  If you watch your weight, exercise, and stop using excuses, you'll be free very soon and fit as a fiddle.

I'm the "guest" above who said she was glad she googled instead of starting again and went on digestive enzymes.  Thought I would check in.

I'm almost five weeks in and pretty much back to normal.  Well, actually, better than normal as I think I can say I'm no longer quitting smoking but am now officially a non-smoker.  Huzzah!  The digestive enzymes and probiotics worked for the most part to resolve a lot of my cessation symptoms like the bloating, gas, upset tummy and some skin texture changes (acne, weird rash on my cheeks and really dry, chapped lips that all showed up immediately after I quit).  I was still kind of bloated but not too bad and I continued to have issues with edema, though, which I've never had before. It did go away on it's own.  I just had to be patient.

At this point, I'm now feeling really, really good.  I was able to taper off the enzymes and probiotics last weekend without any problems.  I'm also happy to say that the weight gain was temporary.  I spent the entire month of January a good 10lbs heavier than usual.  My clothes didn't fit.  My shoes felt too tight.  It sucked but it doesn't last.  Now that my body has figured out how to actually function without nicotine, I dropped the water weight and I'm back to the same size I was the day I had my last cigarette.

So, my advice is to give it time.  Check out enzymes and probiotics to get rid of the worst of it.  It's temporary and your body WILL heal.  Yes, it sucks in the meantime but it's short lived and worth it.

I have joined this page as forever big dreams on the 21st January n that area, where I also complained about the bloating after quitting smoking after 40 years, I got rid of the bloating by using one of my products that I sell in my home based business, taken care of that, and by using this product, no more menopause, so I am really doing good, everybody that sees me lately says I am looking absolutely gorgeous, so I have quit smoking on the 14th Jan 13, and I am so greatful, never made such a good decision, and to top it all my husband stopped s well last Thursday and he is looking so good, it is amazing how awesome a person can feel.

Lots of love,

Magda/Forever Big Dreams

Foreverbigdreams, everyone else is sharing their solutions. Yours is quite vague. What is this product that you used and did you use it exclusively? I've tried 3 times and failed 3 times due to the digestive issues aggravating my other issues (with no digestive system, hard to absorb allergy medicine and vitamin B12). I can get shots for the B12 but the allergy meds are necessary for me to be able to absorb. More details would be appreciated.

OK boys and girls, after reading through all of the posts here, I'm {A} happy to find out I'm not the only one it happens to and {B} determined to find a solution, because that's what I do.   I've been cutting back, preparing for my quit date for a few weeks now.  I've been down to 6 or 7 a day for a couple weeks and the digestive symptoms have begun.   After reading the posts on here, I went out and got some fresh ginger root, Lemon & Ginger tea, peppermint tea and some organic chai tea.  I put two bags of each type of tea in boiling water with a sliver of the ginger root and let it all steep for 10 minutes.  I added a little bit of honey and then some agave nectar to sweeten it.  I drank about half of a cup.   Then I added a little more mineral water and put it in the fridge for tomorrow.   It soothed my stomach a little bit already.  I'll have some more before I go to sleep.   The next week will tell.   It's worth a shot, eh?

It is; I had to give up weed anyway because I moved to Japan and then I gave up fags soon afterwards.. so many health problems... but that's another issue (so horribly fat, farty and bloated). Whenever you give up weed you get attacks of sudden panic; elation; sudden involuntary moments of extreme self-consciousnesses and doubt, coupled with of course, depression. But it goes away! I'd honestly forgotten until now that it was even like that for a while, yea! Good luck ;-)
