I've been on Fentanyl for several years (2) and am growing increasingly tired of it. The problem is that I'm really, really dependant and it doesn't last me the 2 days that it is supposed to, so every other day I jones for it and have w/d symptoms. Literally...w/d every second day of my life, it's miserable.

I live with my girl of 6 years and want nothing more then to be normal again. I want to be like I used to, not htinking about or worrying about the patches, losing one or running out, how sick I get, whether I can even make plans for the second day? I can't do anything on day 2 because I'm so sick, so that's a horrible way to live.

I have a really bad spinal injury that causes a lot of pain, so they got me on 3 Vic's, Neurontin and 1 50 mcg Fentanyl each day. When I put on a patch after about 2 hours I feel GREAT! Energy, motivation, happy, awake..just fine. The problem is that day 2 is the exact opposite.

I decided to go cold turkey one time and on the 1st day without one (3 days after putting it on), I got hugely sick..worst pain, agitation, anxiety, jones, flu..just the worst thing I could imagine.

So, I want off, my psych is one of the local Bupropenephrine (sp) specialists, so I took that as a sign .

But, I have some questions:

1) How much does it help with the w/d's? Should I expect just some help or a lot with the w/d pain, sickness, jones etc?

2) Am I just going to develop a dependancy on the Sub's?

3) How long until I feel normal again.

Thank you so much for any and all help, honesty and advice. Certainly don't need compassion, just some help.

I can't live like this and need some help. I'm hoping Sub's are the miracle/hope I need.

I would find a new pain doctor. You should not be going through this up and down situation period!!!!

If you want to use sub to get off of other opiates...it will most definately work. Talk to a sub doc to get the proper dose. It will eliminate your symptoms but if you stay on sub for a long time (months) you will have withdrawal symptoms from the sub. Also, you can not take other opiates with suboxone. Sub will block the effects of any other opiate even though sub is a weak and partial opiate. Sub is great for withdrawal because is has the longest half life of any other opiate (even methadone). sub binds to your opiate receptors and knocks off any other opiate that tries to bind. However, Fentynal is the most powerful opiate on the planet in intensity (not duration). Forms of Fentynal have even been used in chemical weapons because simply breathing the vapors is enough to kill a person. That is why your does is measured in micrograms instead of milligrams (about a 1000 fold difference).
At any rate...my point is, that Sub will help you get off of other opiates but it my not help your pain management. Sub is rarely used to treat pain because it has such a weak intensity. It also has a ceiling affect so taking anymore than 30mg/day will not do a darn thing. It is almost impossible to overdose on sub because of the ceiling effect (which is why it is FDA approved to treat addiction).
Another thing you may need to consider if you go on Suboxone is that suboxone has an antagonist in it called nalaxone which may cause you discomfort when you switch from the patch to sub. Instead of suboxone have your doctor give you Subutex. Subutex does not have the nalaxone and will make your transistion smoother. Hope this helps and God bless you

take 8mg of sub for two days and then on 3rd day get som benzos and try to sleep right away as long as poss. sub will get the dope out right away u will fell like hell but u will sleep 2 days of withdraws is better then a week. nalxo will make u go through instant wthdraw. i paid for a rapid detox just to find out that all they did was give me nalxo , benzo, and blood pressure med and also it cost 12k. have a girlfried or some one u trust sleep next to u fro the first 2 days u spaz out she can give u some blood pressure med. sud wioth draw is bad on it own so do not take it more then 2-3 days. by then the body is free of dope because of nalxo and its not enough time for the sub to settle all the way and also sub has a 72 hour H/L. u will get the much needed sleep from the benzo. ive kicked 9x and now i found this way i guess its cheating cause now i would get high for a month at a time and on a weekend i detox and go to work like nothing happened.

Finally, I find someone who is/was taking fentanyl. When I went to see my doc almost 2 weeks ago, I was wearing 275 mg of the patches. They wouldn't last for more that 2 1/2 days. I was wearing 100mg and no less than 3 25 mg.... so, there was never a day where I wasn't wearing less than 175mg. Anyway, I was also taking 160 mg of morphine timed release, and 3-7 lortab every other day. I'm currently on the max dose of Suboxone, 2- 8mg every 12 hours, by the way....when my doctor told me that the sub tastes like s***, she wasn't lying, which I found uncommon for a doc to curse. Well....enough about me, Let me tell you about my experience with the sub, it's not working like I was told it would. She told me that once I was 72 hours into withdrawals, I could take it and I would feel great.... well I did feel better,b/c there were no mo w/d, but I didn't feel great. I still feel like c**p. The med makes my stomach feel strange,painfull....yes,sorry to say. I have mood swings. I also have a daughter....I thought that this sub would let me get back to the life I had before, nope. I don;t know if it's because I need to take it a lil bit longer to get back to "normal".I'm just tired. I felt better when I was wearing and taking those damn pills. I can't get anything done around the house, thank God my husband is here to take care of us, this really really sucks. To anyone out there that wants to try sub...please let your doc know if you are depressed, any kind of feelings your having, share....b/c I think my doc doesn't realize my whole situation. Which I will call her monday to let her know, cause sub IS NOT working for me. I read stories of how people think its the best thing since sliced bread. I strongly dissagree. I'm going into a whole story about my self.....my point is, don't be fooled by what people say about this drug, heck, it might work for you. I find that I just moved from one med(s) to another, I hear now that the w/d from sub are worse b/c what you feel when youre going through your regular w/d add a temp on top of it. If I dont take my doses when I should, say an hour or so late, I start to run a temp. They say you feel like c**p ,plus more w/d symptoms from sub. Ugh, I;m so confused. I dont know if I should go back to what I was doing before. But would I have to go through sub w/d before i could feel the other stuff, cause the sub is attached to the receptors. Okay, before I go any further...if there is anyone out there going through what im going through...with the fentanyl and the morphine and stuff, please contact me or post. We can get through this. Seriously....everybody, there is a solution to our problems, but everyone is different. I wish I could help people who are going through the same thing and have someone help me. K, I'm going to go try to sleep. Don't for one second think you're alone. :?

Ali,

I'm so sorry to hear your trouble. I'm not sure I understand all of it - but I do want to. I'm not sure you've given the suboxone enough time - it isn't a miracle drug. I think people think it is. Some people do feel remarkable better right when they take it, but for others it takes awhile to feel even a bit normal. I was that way. Also, concerning withdrawals: I had heard horror stories of people puking, fevers, etc. for weeks on end. The worst that happened to me (and I was on 12 mg), was that I was achy and tired for about 1 week each time I would cut down 1 mg. Not tired and achy enough not to work, though. I still could work 80 hours a week. It sure beat the pain med withdrawals that I went through. The best thing that happened is that my own body (after awhile) began to take care of the pain I'd been feeling since before having a surgery. Now, I am medication free and I have no pain. Last year at this time, I contemplated dying. There seemed to be no hope. I was in a vicious circle of pain, way too many prescribed medications, and no relief in sight.

How can I help you?

Hey Lisa,

Thank you.... It's nice to see that someone who has taken suboxone is now med-free. I suppose deep down inside I know its going to take longer for me to feel better and that fact makes me very upset. I'm just tired of living this way, dependent on something to "make me feel better". I started taking/using...I hate to use that phrase"using"....anyway, I started b/c of pain in my hands, then it slowly turned into self-medication. I finally got to the point when I couldn't take it any longer.. But now I feel awful. I wish The suboxone would start to work for me sooner. Thanks again.

Ali,

Don't feel bad. You obviously want just to be out of pain, out of the cycle. One good thing about suboxone is that as you take it (and stay off the bad stuff), your body's own "natural" pain killers begin to work. They've stopped working (probably) because they haven't had to. Most people in chronic pain, afraid to stop taking pain meds (for fear of life-long pain) are surprised when after awhile the pain subsides. I needed to take Advil/Tylenol for awhile for my pain, but now am on nothing.

Hang in there.

My doctor, and others have said that the duration of acute withdrawals can differ from person to person. For example, she said one of her patients went from a 32mg. a day use of suboxone, stopped cold turkey, and was feeling normal in a few days. Now I heard storied like this before, similar stories that include a quick withdrawal from even heroin. Do you think that using suboxone for just two days, and I'm assuming your doing it IV or IM cause the nalaxone in sub won't affect you if you take it as prescribed(sublingually), that the average person can detox this way comfortably.

hi first of all ive been on fent patches and everything else and i can tell you the switch will be terrible for the first month or so. Fentynl is much stronger than oxy and methadone and they say to only be on about 30mg of methadone or 40mg of oxy to do the switch to suboxone and that fentynyl patients shouldnt use anything other than methadone to detox with. the suboxone is way to weak as an agonist to help you feel good in the first stages of your withdrawl. take it from me i switched from 30mg of methadone to suboxone 8 mg and it took over a month to even feel normal and to this day over a year later i still have to take this stuff and its harder to get of of then the dope! I suffer from cronic pain and iam in pain everyday you need to talk to your doctor and get him to change your break through drug to oxycodone and possible up your patch but i wouldnt do the jump just yet ud be trading one drug for another and be in 10 times more pain than before, people will try and convince you to do it but rarely do you get fentnyl patients to do the switch cause it has such a high faliure rate and they end up loosing there scripts when they dont like the suboxone and have to comb the streets for anything they can get.

If you really need pain meds why do you want off completely. Is it due to critics or short supply? Do you have insurance that would let you get a 60 or 90 day supply? that would free your time and give you 3 monthes of time before needing to go to the doctor. Have you discussed cutting down with your doc or staggering the patch application differently? I was on the patches also and found 2 1/2 days was the max it worked. I know how you feel it is a pain feeling like a ball and chain that won't come off sometimes, but then when I am off I feel like I'm 75 unable to function and hiding in the dark due to migrains. Also when not on meds I was on diability 2xs! With the meds I work I exercise I go out I travel. I would not give them up for the world. I am a mother to my childern when I am properly taking my meds w/o I am in bed unable to function.

I am happy on the treatment I am on now and keep it a secret from my family because I don't want to hear the negitive c**p anymore. Without the meds I have migraines daily and have trouble moving sometimes even breathing hurts due to my scoliosis in the thoracic spine! That's from a rib popping out of it's socket after a car accident 15 years ago. When it flairs up the movement of my lugs irritates the area so yes even breathing hurts. The same accident caused my cervical herniations and that led to the cervical curve gone and arthritis thru the region.

Well all i can say is when i went from 400 mg morphine a day for RA and ankle replacement and 6-8 oxy 5mg for break thru. i just was tired of the daily routine, being stereotyped at pharmacy. (because i look very young) what could i possibly need that for. well i decided to deal with my pain and do suboxone. HELL and back, thats how i felt on day 1+2. its been better but i hurt sooooo bad and i wont get any better with my disease. what the heck to i do Keep suboxone or keep going up and up on pain meds, is that just the hand i was delt. i try to be stron but this suboxone doesnt do a damn thing for me. im not an addict i dont get high i just get by so i can take care of my kids and now i am having a hard time getting around . isnt there anywhere in the middle.
