I had an emergency cranieotomy 12/22/09 ... dr's removed a tumor from the right frontal lobe the size of cutie orange 2x2x2 1/2..... i was not symptomatic prior to the procedure they have diagnosed it as a GLIOBLASTOMY ... I was in ICU 1 night , reg room 1 night and went home the next day... did not require any type of therapy...I told them prior to the procedure that I would not need the therapist services.
i agree that your attitude and expectations has a lot to do w/ recovery. I start radiation and chemo in a couple of weeks. BUT AM DETERMINED TO BEAT THIS DIAGNOSIS... AS I HAVE MUCH MORE LIVING TO DO.. i am only 38...this is definitely a bump in the road but I REFUSE TO ACCEPT CANCER AND AM ONLY ACCEPTING GOD'S ULTIMATE HEALING.

My brain was blooding and after that, I had two Brain Surgery on 6 /11/2009..After that my right side was completely paralyzed, and my speeching ability was completely lost. But I am a left handed.

Now I can speech nearly 60% of words and walking very slowly. But my hand is very weak. I can raise my hand but I can't do any thing with that.

Now 4 month have been past, and my hope that I can recovered nearly 90% is sinking. Is there cases that recovered after 4 month.

Hi

I was just interested to see what everyone else was saying about recovery times in here.
I had a tumour removed from my left temporal lobe to stop seizures 2 weeks ago. It had swollen and had developed a large amount of fluid that was causing issues!
They did a craniotamy which took a few hours and from all the warnings and reading stuff I was fully expecting to be a total mess when I came out.
As soon as they brought me out of the anaesthetic I was wide awake, recognised everyone in the room, in fact the first thing I said was "Have you started yet?"
I slept a fair bit for a couple of days but was out of there after 2 nights. It is now 2 weeks on and yesterday I biked 10 miles and the day before that I played 9 holes of golf (very poorly but that is nothing to do with surgery!).
The doctors said I should take a minimum of 6 weeks off work so I am going to have a great summer watching the world cup and playing golf.
Somebody mentioned elsewhere that it is about attitude and I totally agree. As soon as I knew I was having the surgery I got fit with biking and running and then I booked a holiday to Vegas to completely take my mind off any stress. This is the best thing I could ever recommend, do the most daring thing you can and your mind soon switches to the new challenge.

I dont deny that I have been quite tired at times and for the first week I got a few headaches but I feel like this is a wake up call to the rest of my life, I am 32 now and the first thing I thought as soon as I came around was that I had better make the most of the remaining 60 years (I think 92 is a good age to aim at! :-)

So hang in there people, do something everyday that scares you

I'm schuduled for brain surgery at the end of August. My story is something else on how i come to find this out. I went into the Er for my left eye swollen shut and then moving down into my check. They did a CT scan to see if i had an infrction behind my eye. I didn't, he came back and told me i have a brain anurysam. do you think i brokedown? Yes of course i did. I go get an MRI now mind you that for a full week i'm afraid to even sneeze cough or anything. I do the MRI n then see the surgeon and he tells me i have good news and bad news. the good news is i don't have a anurysam I have a Meningioma tumor. ok that's better. before my appt i went to the hospital were i have been seen since 2003 for severe headaches on a daily basis's I got my exrays and records from all my scans. come to find out i've had this since 2006 n they never informed me. doesn't that suck ? It went from a 5 mm to a 22 mm. It is on the front part of my brain just above my forehead right in the middle. I've read now all these things about the effects on people after surgery and i'm even more scared to have it know then ever My daughte is getting married in March 2011 in Jamacia and i'm afraid now i won't be in any shape to go to her wedding. any thoughts on if it would be a better idea to wait till after our trip for her wedding cause i'd really hate to miss it or be in a condition to where my trip there would be a disaster and having to have some help me with everything i do. Thanks Lisa

I couldn't wait to reply results from my experience. I agonized and did a lot of research on the Meningioma I had on the right size of my head. It was 2 cm in size and I was very concerned about my future and the future of my family. I went through every emotion from death, never being the same and not being able to teach my daughter to ride a bike. This was a life changing experience that needed and had to be done.

I went into the hospital on Monday morning 7/12 and was at home eating dinner with family 7/13 Tuesday evening, remarkable right? I really have no bad effects, only how to manage the recovery and hoping infections or me moving to fast doesn't factor into play. I'm learning what I can and cannot do but you have to pace yourself and follow your doctor's advice as closely as possible. I'm hoping that my recover period is close to the 4 week period but I feel great at times and have to sit down and relax at others. It's going to be a little challenge but I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get back to my normal life. It's kind of funny because the only thing I fear now is those darn MRIs because I hate those things but I'll take that in order to raise my girls.

A lot of B.S. has been said and written over the last several months about my so called boring, nothing to do, dreadful and will never be anything city. I will tell you all one thing, if you're fortunate and blessed enough to research your disease and want the best health care professionals in the world, CLEVELAND, OHIO namely University Hospital and Cleveland Clinic is where you want to be (CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER). You don't have to believe me but I'm living proof: Craniotomy, two day hospital stay and 4 days later responding to this blog. Life is good and trust in your health care and you'll be fine!! :D

this is my second brain surgery. i had the first tumor removed in march of 2010, then it was found to have grown back 4 months later. so i had the second craniotomy last week. luckily with both of my discoverys, they were checked, not found because of seizures or issues with vision. i've personally had no issues with healing on either. my only recovery is scar maintenance. i had a full recovery of both surgeries, im ok to drive, i walk normal, my memory i agree is NOT the same. i find myself struggling most with short term memory. but aside from that, im not on any long term medication such as keppra, as we found out with last surgery I am severely allergic. now I just take the pain meds, and am to start radiation soon. ill know more this coming week when i meet with my neuro onchologist. and hopefully with the chemo wafers that were placed in this time the tumor will not grow back as quickly.. best of luck to all.

I had a brain tumor removed a few weeks ago (right frontal lobe) - was 3cm big physically I am "normal" like I was before the surgery but I am starting to notice (as time passes) that my short term memory isn't as great as it used to be (for example: I forget to fluch the toilet, I used to be OCD about that b/c let's face it, it's gross if you don't, I find myself leaving the faucet water running and I just walk away without turning it off, granted these things may be considered minor, but to me I feel out of whack honestly, because that's not who I was before the surgery - my healing is going well and I am not in much pain just itching because i'm healing. the dr cut from the top of my ear all the way across to the top of the other - kind of looks like a headband - he hid it very well i must say - I am very pleased with the outcome of my surgery -

My mother just got back from hospital today after a craniotomy. The meningioma was removed successfully and she is recovering well. 2 days in High Care with another 1 night in the general ward. I am surprised after a 7 hour operation that she has made it home so quickly. Her speech is a bit slow at the moment and some things take a little more time than normal. She isnt experiencing much pain and if so medication does help quite rapidly.

Good luck to anybody going for this surgery!

On November 16th I had 2meningioma tumors removed, I spent a week and 3 days in a rehab hospital learning to deal with total right side paralysis, I went from a walker to a cane and leg brace for the right leg because of drop foot in 5 days. I am at home now and doing 3 days a week physical therapy I play WII fit daily and it is helping a lot with regaining control and feeling on the right side. It has been 6 weeks now. In 1999 I had a meningioma tumor removed and recovered was a lot faster and not as sever. The big thing is to take it day by day and push your self to do more and more. I keep a positive attitude and just keep moving the only problem I am having now is the sleepless nights. I will sleep for about 4 hours at a time and that is all I need. It is very frustrating to be the only one awake in the house at 3 a.m. it's not that I sleep all day either I am up with the family and on the go the rest of the day. The Dr. did give me Ambian but I do not want to become dependent on a sleep aide. So I am left sleepless in Florida. LOL

i had a hemangioblastoma tumor removed from the cerabela area of my brain 5 weeks ago.i had exactly the same tumor removed 7 years ago.it took about 3 1/2 months to recover from this for me to be able to return to work.i was not 100%until 18 months later.with my current condition the doctors said about 2 months recovery but i am no where near ready to return to work and am finding that i am still suffering from headaches and my vision is only about 60%.i am also suffering from ensomnia.i would imagine having another 6-8 weeks off and looking at it again then.everybodies different in there recovery time and you need to not be impatient and as time goes on your body should rectify the problems.

left ear hearing total lost and left eye vision blur. the recovery is painfully slow. after 1 year 3 months had recovered about 50% only. memory lost same but brain very sharp , better than before operation. most important never give up. i believed i could fully- recover in another 1 year the most. i never stop physiotherapy since discharged from hospital, once a week and twice weekly acupuncture. remember what ever set back is only temporary, after surgery and treatment , you will be healthy again. that was the reason drive me to go on and on. i want be normal again.

Hi. My dad just had a meningioma removed last week (exactly 1 week from today)... He has just been moved to inpatient rehab this morning. It concerns me because mentally i see no improvement. He is very confused & having delusions. He does not know where he is, but does recognize family members by name when we visit. Is this normal? He was fully independent before the surgery, highly functional & very dapper. Now he looks like an old man. Will he stay like this? They just put him on Keppar yesterday. How long will he need to remain on this? is it likely he will experience seizures? I would appreciate any advice, help & prayers. Thank you all & God Bless.

Hi I had my orange sized brain tumour removed in sept 09, my wound got infected so i had two weeks in hospital for that in oct 09. I came home and then over the months of trying to get the wound on the top of my head to heal i noticed an egg shaped lump appear, i went back to hospital, given a CT scan and told i had a life threatening infection and an abcess on my brain so had more brain surgery on 16th Dec 09. I was in hospital for eight n half weeks but did not come off all antibiotics till April 2010.

Recovery is slow. Physically im doing well but emotionally im a wreck. Memory is not good and you can drive yourself mad trying to improve it but time is the answer. I do have times when i think i would of been better of dying during the operations as recovery can be such hard going.

As i had seizures due to the tumour and infection i lost my driving licence for over a year. i had to be seizure free for a full year to drive. I felt like i had no control over my life so decided to lose weight as i could control that and had become very bloated with the steroids i had to take......i've now lost 3 stones plus.

Having no pain to cope with is great, I had constant headaches everyday, all day before surgery. I am told by my consultant it takes at least two years to recover from brain surgery. My head still feels hard like a coconut at the top but overall im doing and looking well BUT that does not help as emotionally you don't feel it BUT because you look fine everyone thinks you are back to your normal self when you really are not and you feel frustrated, agitated and teary.

So CHIN UP you like me can get through this. Hope this helps xx :-D

HI dulshaniko,

Your condition is very similar to my after brain tumor surgery (CPA) tumor, the size 4cm, my was done 20/10/2009. i am now on 2nd year of recovering, but i am doing ok. had since recovered some control , able to use my right hand, can type on key board of laptop using 1 finger. 6 months ago i was able take care myself like going to washroom, taking a bath and change clothing. now can walk without aid for short distance like 20-30 meters on a perfectly flat surface.

To be frank, you are expect quick recovery, you would be disappointed. recovery is painfully slow, this you have to accept, very soon if you keep on physiotherapy and i double up with 2 acupuncture a week. this i believe can help me to recover fully in another year or so

best regards

Hello ,

I to had 2 meninigoma tumor removed back in Nov. 2010. I was all so sent to stay in a Rehab facility for 2 weeks. Mine was in the left frontal lobe basically meaning the right motor skills side. I to was on Kepra anytime the brain is messed with like surgery injury ect.. this is a good drug to go on just in case. I my case I have now been weaned off it for a few weeks now. I lost all motor ability on the right side except for my arm and hand although very weak through physical therapy and determination and hard work I am out of the wheel chair, walker and leg brace still use the cane some of the time as I know if I get tired I will need it. I am a Christian and from the 4 day after surgery I knew I could lay in the hospital bed and wither away or get up and fight with everything I had. That is what I did. I know have p/t and go to the gym and ride the life cycle first it was for 5 min. and now I am doing 2 miles! Still have to strap my foot on the peddle but what ever it takes. I see changes each day. I truly feel my recovery could of gone 2 ways fight with everything I have or lay in bed and give up. I would talk to your dads Dr. and see what they think. I know for me the sooner I got myself up into that walker and drug myself to the shower and made myself do things on my own the better I started to feel.

I will pray for you and your family. I will pray for your dad to have straight and the will to get better the best he can. Therapy can help your dad just keep talking with him play music for him. The more you stimulate him the better and sooner he may show signs or improvement. Best of luck to you and the family recovery can be a long road. I have been through 2 surgeries now. This one was a bit harder but, I am determined to get back as close as I can to where I was.

Worry looks around, fear looks down but, faith looks up and I chose faith.
