Thank you for sharing this post. This is the most reassuring post i have found since having a bilateral open mesh repair (inguinal left side and small femeral hernia on right side ) on 4th March 2016 (2 weeks and 1 day ago). The first week and a half is very painful to be expected with using strong pain killers wich cause constipation which you have to take days of laxatives to get moving. I am normaly a fairly active 49 yo female weighing 55 kg and 5 foot 5 inches tall. They found my hernias one and a half years ago and I had no pain at all in either side before having the surgery. Now after 2 weeks I still have pain that is bareable now but gets worse if i sit upright for more than 5 minutes and worse in the afternoon and evening which makes me reach for a couple of panadols which dont seem to do much tho. The swollen hard lump area under each insisions have not changed at all in 2 weeks tho the one on my right was present straight after surgey and the left one popped up 6 days later.. they are both very tender and sore to touch and havent been able to wear underwear since opp and the idea of wearing a pair of jeans seems a long way off. I had no idea it was going to set me back this long. I know its only been 2 weeks but I have read other posts were people are back at work after 2 weeks, and then there are the horror stories. I have been doing a few light duties around the house but find i need to lay down flat on bed to ease pain after a while. I am missing my brisk walks without pain that i used to have. My main concern is the hard lumps that havent improved in size at all yet, so reading your post has given me a glimmer of hope and a positive out look now. Thank you

Hi. I am a 70-yr old male with generally good health. Three weeks ago, I had day surgery to repair an abdominal hernia above the navel. I also a history of IBS. Despite the fact that surgical pain has diminished, and no sign of infection, I have fairly severe and sustained bloating, both in the abdomen and under it, in areas where the intestine is located. Despite having lost a bit of weight, I still can't get into my pants. Sometimes, I have the impression that the hernia repair wasn't successful-- the bump is still very prominent; however, there's no recurrence of the pains I used to have when IBS swelling was combined with the old hernia. Any advice?

Update 8 weeks later. I forgot to mention I have numb areas around my groin under incisions and inner legs and pubic bone, there has been no change to this in 8 weeks so I am starting to think this will be permanent which upsets me very much. Even tho it feels numb I can still get deep aches and burning sensations from time to time in that area as well. On a good note, at the 6 week mark I was able to pick up my one year old granddaughter again, and vacuum and mop and do normal cleaning jobs again. I have been able to wear jeans again for the last 2 weeks and I can even brisk walk again, but my body will let me know if I have been over doing it as I can become achy and get burning sensations around the whole groin area. But generally pain free most of the time now, but still have lumps under incisions that still haven't changed in size yet. Before my op I was told I had an Inguinal on the left and a femoral on the right but was informed at my 7 week check up that I had an Inguinal on the right as well (3 hernias all up!) I mentioned about my numb areas and they didn't think that was normal, but did say it can be normal to have a small area under each incision, that may never come back, but not normally in the areas I have, which unfortunately makes me think I will never get the feeling back again. It is still a little tender when incision area is touched but I'm sure that will get better with time. Just curious, if there is anyone who has had numbness in areas like me and if so, did the feeling come back in time. Thanks in advance.

Thank you for that info. I had an umbilical hernia surgery on 5/9/16 no issues. I was concerned about the hardness around the button about 2 inches round , no pain I thought it was an infection! Relieved at the explanation.. Thank you again for the answer.

Interesting. Was yours an umbilical (belly) or an inguinal hernia? My swelling is still terrible, and it's been 3.5 months since the surgery. The surgical mass under the sin has barely begun to shrink.

Same thing here. 5 weeks post op. Severe burning and feels like glass shards are tearing up my abdomen. Going for CT scan tomorrow. Curious what your outcome was after your scan? Hope it's healing up well.

I had bilateral inguinal hernia surgery (open) on Friday 8/26/2016. The right side of my groin is just fine. But the left side of my groin is hurting and is especially bloated increasingly as I get up to walk. Supposedly walking and keeping active will make it improve as the hernia doctor states. I never had bloating before the surgery till now. I don't know what to do.

Umbilical hernia repair no mesh 7 days ago and I look 5 months pregnant! Swelling waxes and wanes during the day to the point it even makes my back hurt and a little short of breath. Had killer abs before and now you can't even see them. Is this normal?
