I had an epigastric hernia repair five years ago and it was so painful. The pain wouldn't go away and I had bloating and intestinal problems. Eventually I the hernia came back and I had to have it repaired again. This time I paid the money to go to a private surgeon who told me that it took 80 minutes to try and undo the damage that was done during the first hernia repair. He also put mesh in that time.  I am still in pain have had a CT scan and there is a lot of inflammation but they can't do anything. So for me I have days where it swells so much that I look like I am about to give birth and it is so painful. I am a 52 year old female.

Thanks for this - I had a right side hernia mesh repair some 18 days ago and still have the solid "ridge" surrounding my scar - although this does seem to be gradually reducing day by day. However I do have a very sensitive area right at the top of the scrotum - to a point where it's painful to touch at times, and as I move I feel the tightness referenced above - my concern is that either I've been overdoing it a little, or conversely not moving enough and the mesh is hardening in the incorrect place, hence the "pull" I feel with certain movements.

Anyone else have this same sensation?

I had a tear in my stomach lining then resulted in me getting a hernia.  I had a patch put in that was very large, 4x6 and that was 6 months ago.  I am swelled up like I am 9 months pregnant and the pain has increased constant to a 7 to 8 daily and jumps to a 10 many times if I try to do just normal activity.  I can not bend over, I can not put my own shoes on, I can not lay on my sides at night, and I have to wear my clothes up high over my stomach as not to touch it and hurt.  I had the pain management shots to my stomach and nothing happened.  Will I look like I'm pregnant forever??  Will the pain ever go away??  Going to have patch removed but they say I could get worse!  Totally ruined my life and has been a nightmare!!!!!!!!!!

I had a double umbilical hernia repair with mesh 16 weeks ago.  I still get pain but not as bad as I had been getting all the way up until a month ago.  Under my belly button, where one of the hernias had protruded, there is now a newly puffed out area just in the last week or so.  Also, I have a purplish rashy discoloration in and outside my belly button area (not itchy or painful).  I can still feel the hard lumpiness of the mesh when I press on it.  I feel like my belly is huge.  HELP!!

I had an incisional hernia that developed about a year after abdominal surgery. The doctor waited about another 7 months before doing the hernia repair so I could be strong enough. Anyway, I looked about 7 months pregnant before surgery. This has been about a year ago. I have talked to the doctor about this because I look like I am 4-5 months pregnant ( I am 5'1" and weigh 122). The doctor told me to do sit ups! What a cop out on his part. I am also 67 years old. By the way, The abdominal surgery I had was because a doctor made a mistake on a procedure. In critical care for several weeks and in the hospital between four and five months.....long story.

Thank you for the sound information. It take the worry out of the healing process and I am grateful.

I had keyhole surgery for a hernia two weeks ago, and tonight, noticed a hard lump around my belly button where the main incision was made. I am seeing the surgeon tomorrow, hoping that it might be this 'healing ridge' which sounds a bit like my 'problem.' It's not painful and I only just noticed it. Hoping that I did not induce a problem with some id**t thing I've done!

Hi, I am 41yro female and had a femoral hernia repair as well as spigelian hernia repair 2 weeks ago. I too feel very bloated and have a big bulge around the spigelian repair wound. Mine were both open repairs with mesh in spigelian repair. I can't wear any of my jeans due to the swelling and still have to be very careful with certain movement. I get tired very easily, I have a follow up in 2 weeks. I hope I don't have the problems that some of you have had. Best of luck.

Did his swelling every go away? I had laproscopic surgery and it's been 9 mths and I have an odd ridge from one incision to the next that the doctor won't acknowledge. I've gone in twice since surgery and he is quite pompous, saying no one has ever questioned his surgery after. Hope your dad's is healing...
