I had umbilical hernia surgery 4 months ago. I had a lot of swelling around the site and it has VERY slowly gone down. It still bulges out more and makes my belly look pointy. I am just hopeful that as I give it time, it will go down more. The surgeon said that it can take time.

Hello everyone.  I had a double inguinal hernia repair 10 days ago.  I had a lot of swelling and bruising in my penis and scrotum but this has since subsided.  I also had a lot of swelling in my left calf and ankle...I slept with my legs up on pillows about 1.5 feet high and the next day it was much better..now it is fine.  I had a sharp pain in my until day before yesterday...it gets better every day.  When I got home from surgery I kept feeling and looking where the hernia was and it was completely flat...now..on both sides...it feels like there is a knot there...almost like a much smaller hernia...however;  I recalled before surgery that my surgeon had told me that I might encounter exactly that.  He said it was usual and expected and I shouldn't be concerned because it was swelling from fluid which had filled the void of the hernia.  I go back to see him in three days and will inform you if there is something else going on.

Btw...my surgeon came in before surgery...asked me if I minded if he said a prayer before we went to the OR...I was okay with that and he said a very nice prayer, asking for guidance, etc. and before I left the hospital he came in and visited briefly; giving me some last minute advice..don't lift anything over ten pounds, etc. and to make an appointment for two weeks out.  I was out taking a walk the day after I got home and things have progessed pretty much as I had hoped.  I am a 57 year old male.

I left out a word in one sentence. I had a sharp pain in my .... abdomen... about half way between my belly button and the actual hernia on the right side....

So, I did go see the surgeon and he told me that the hard swelling I was experiencing was not the hernia recurring but fluid that had filled up the space where the hernia was. He has done over 4000 of these procedures...so...he knows. He also said that guys who have both sides done usually have pain more on one side or the other. Everything he said is normal...don't need to make another appointment. He said it might take several months for the swelling to go down, but that it would. In rare cases he said he has had to remove the fluid but generally it dissipates slowly all by itself.

My doctor said to see him in weeks to see if it goes away or what he will have to do about it if not gone.

I've just had the Hernia operation with mesh, I'm lucky enough to say this is my third Hernia Op. Both previous Hernias were when I was young,, first I was born with, got it sorted when I was 2; it was above my belly button;;;; second was lower right side of the groin area, got it sorted when I was 7. This time the hernias on the left groin area;;; I must say I wasn't impressed with the expected procedure of being out the same day as the Op,,,, seemed a bit quick for me. Anyway,, my surgeon was ok, told me more or less what I'd expect to hear. After the Op I felt not to bad,, although I was no sooner in the ward when they checked my blood pressure,, it was high, nevertheless they confirmed I was good to go. It took me 5 attempts to stand and walk without feeling like I was going to faint. I'm far from a woose, though I had waited from 7am without food or drink until I got taken to the operating theatre at 4pm. I got back to the ward at 5:45pm after the Op and they expected me to leave hospital at 8pm. Not sure about you guys but I thought this was rather a big ask. I did manage to get out the ward and to the car,, though wasn't easy by any means. It's been 7 days since the Op,,, I have a slight bit of swelling around the scar,, I'm hoping this is just normal. I thought I'd be back to normal duties within a week as I'm relatively fit,, but I'm still finding there's pressure around the scar when I stand, guess I'm slightly worried I'll make it worse if I do to much to fast. Oh and just to update anyone reading this who may have just had the same operation;; I felt faint each time I tried to make it as far as the toilet for 2 days,, not sure if this was down to the high blood pressure or not.. I'm hoping to see my GP tomorrow and get good news that it's healing as it should, fingers crossed.

I've notices that the pain and swelling is signifacantly worse about 6 hours after taking ibprofen or half of a 5/325 oxycodone/acetiphetimine. I am 15 days post operations of an inguinal hernia repair. I have taking a total of 3.5 pills fearing the risk of dependancy. The pain I've been through due to pain killers is much more severe then the pain of this hernia.
