HI everyone I'm worried, I usually don't drink, but last saturday (today is Thursday) I got wasted, I had Vodka and Rum mix. I've really never had a hangover, so I woke up Sunday and I felt like c**p, I had short breath, having like panic attack all day, the Monday morning came around I noticed the back of my head was in mild pain , touched the back of my skull and it was swollen it almost even felt like a dent 3 fingers before the neck section starts. It felt like a bruise, felt swollen and even a little crink like feeling by the neck. Today is thursday and it seems to be going down I'm just worried, I have no insurance and I have to wait till Saturday to go to the hospital for
"free day" . Right now the swollen when down a lot bit theres still some left, i feel normal just a small pain sort of the one you get when you sleep wrong, so it bothers me..... hope im ok and the docs on satuday figure it out

Todd,
I believe I have this. Are you aware of any cancers that are related to this? Can you get a test to see what form of ALDH yoiu have?

Wow, I can't believe so many people are having these symptoms! Mine started around 3 months ago after a bad cold, a lymph node in my neck didn't go down. Not uncommon for me. I have cat scratch disease and had to previously have a lymph node surgically removed that would not go down in the past. But I started drinking wine probably 6 months ago and recently started to notice that I'd wake up with a sore throat, sinus issues and the lymph node in my neck is swollen. After a few hours (typically around lunch time), it decreases in size. It's never sore, only my throat. I've decided to stop drinking wine (and any other alcohol) for a few weeks to see if this is my issue. I read this article on wine allergies, I thought I'd share. It had some great info.

This weekend is the first time my neck glands have swollen up.

During the last 2 weeks I began adding a bit of vinegar and lots of vegetable oil to my salad.

Two days ago was the the first time since that change that I consumed alcohol (Everclear & O.J.)

I seem to have become extremely sensitive to the effects from alcohol after almost 1 or 2 drinks. The glands in my neck swell for approx 1 week and I also experience nausea / slight dizziness.

Obviously the answer here would be to stop consuming alcohol, but could there be any permanent answers to this problem ? I have had no success with explaining this to my GP.

Thoughts would be appreciated, thanks.

this happens to me too....i loooove drinking my vodka and i used to be fine with it...but now sadly enough when i drink even a little bit i tend to get a swollen gland in the left side of my neck and sore throat...it sucks but i suppose i could just move to another drink?? i just want to kno if this is an alergy and why it hit me now instead of when i heavily drank it...anyone who knows would be greatly appreciated if you emailed me some more info:******

edema (swelling) is one of the symptoms and is due to a fluid buildup - in some people its caused by an allergic reaction to alcohol - other symptoms are nausea, rapid heartbeat and a red swollen face. the allergy is caused by an enzyme (ALDH2) deficiency which metabolizes alcohol into acetate. without ALDH2 alcohol enters the blood stream as acetaldehyde which is a toxin known to cause respiratory and skin irritation, including swelling, puffiness and cancer. i get the same reaction, moreso when i've drunk too much or am already dehydrated or tired. try lower % alcohol and a glass of water between each drink to minimise dehydration.

Finally found others with the same issue.. same thing here, 1 or 2 drinks of beer or vodka cause the swelling! No smoking though.

I have been trying to explain this to a few doctors and they just prescribed basic over the counter medicine and sent me home. I paid $350 for this advice.

ACTIONS: They said, drink less alcohol, have less coffee and less chocolate. (Wow, taking the best things out life).

Anyhow, wanted to get some perspective on what actions we should take next?

For example, if there is a risk of throat cancer, what kind of check-ups can you get done to ELIMINATE that possibility?

If there is an infection, what kind of tests should we take? Would a standard blood test yield results? A bioposy? Or a scan?

If it's allergies, how do you get it checked?

Please share your experience but lets also keep the discussion action oriented.

Alcohol in the body - builds up in the form of toxins. Toxins that cannot get flushed out...cause inflammation and swelling of the Lymph nodes. Swelling of the lymphs....can lead to cancers if not treated. I read that Blood work...will not tell us the whole truth. I agree that we cannot process alcohol after many yrs of " social drinking". We have to cleanse the kidney and liver with herbs and vitamins,,,and flush out the lymphs with motion. There is no way to detox a swollen lymph node...with out moving. It is not like the circulatory sytem that has a pump to move things out. I have severe lymph node problems behind my left ear and throat. I am putting heat on it and taking endless herbs ..Lymphatonics and Kidney cleanse. Astragalus and Burdock root, Parsley and Dandelion..as well as goldenseal and echinecea...garlic and milk thistle...etc. SEEMS TO BE WORKING. Cheaper than radiation therapy. Vodka is the VERY worst for this. White wine ok. NO tequila, coors light...maybe...Just NO Spirits. That is very toxic. and well if we can't find any way to relieve this stress...prayer.

The same exact thing happens to me. Last month I was in the doctor 4 times for mono (and my lymph nodes in my neck were all so swollen). Since then the swelling has gone down and I feel normal again, but when I drink they swell back up. I also feel the affects of my drink after just one, when before I got mono it took a whole 4. If I drink enough, not only do my lymph nodes swell, I feel weak, catch a fever and am sick for the next week. I never talked to a doctor about it, but I'm guessing its all a part of getting over mono (which can take up to 6 months).

I too had a sudden problem with swollenglands and after trying everything including changing to a strict organic diet and removing sugar and milk, it became slightly better and less frequest as apposed to eery day, but then I realized I was pre-menopausal at 37 and new to now add vitamin D to my diet (in the form a d-drops), and as an added bonus it also completely took a way teh swollen glands....this was never advised by stupid and uneducated so-called doctors' who only tried to push their nasty drugs on me. When in fact it was simply a matter of fixing my vitamin D deficiency, which at least 90% of the people in the US and Canada have and perhaps the organic diet helped as well, but vitamin D was the main contributor and although it is completely gone and i have no problems, the Doctor's tell me that they never knew waht the problem was and yet they don't believe that vitamin D fixed it???// Most Doctor's KNOW NOTHING ABOUT NUTRITION and take only a 45 minute lesson on it in all of the seven years they are educated, THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT NUTRITION and yet they are going to help heal us, this sis the common consensus and it is c**p, they are modern day drug pushers who make alot of money from doing so and NO MONEY WHEN they cure you, and any truthful doctor with a brain and conscience will tell you 90% of illnesses and disease are preventative thorugh nutrition alone! But the medical field woudl go broke, just like cancers, there are many cures but the public never hears of them unless of course you research it yourself and guess what, there are many cures for all types of cancers beginning and many ending with NUTRITION, organic foods and not what a stupid dietician tells you, they stilll think wheat and grains are good for human consumption and they are not!!!

Me too. My glands are always swollen but when I try to stop my daily pint of beer, the pain and irritation ramp up a thousandfold! The withdrawal is still ramping up four days out, which is the point I cave in and have beer - and it usually subsides back to "normal". Thing is - I really must stop it, - does anyone know of a remedy that will mitigate the mouth ulcers and swollen glands I get when I try to quit?

Very very bizarre - but the exact same thing happens to me! Not all the time, but after drinking certain vodkas, I get a painful swollen lymph node on the side of my neck too!!!! WEIRD! Last night I drank well vodka and this morning, I have it. I have noticed that Ketel One ALSO does it. Stolichnaya does not. But other times I've dranken well, it also does not. It must be something to do with how the particular vodka is processed. My doctors had no idea what triggered it, but by golly here's the internet, helping me out.

I have been having the same problem with swollen lymph nodes after I drink (swelling, sweats, etc.. ). Been happening on and off for 2 months.

Usually I have to consume quite a bit of alcohol and the problem is far more prevelant with White Wine than any other drink - unfortunately for me... this is my favourite drink. The swelling last for some 3 - 5 days and comes and goes - coming when I eat, going down a lot after I've stopped eating. I've just been to see a doctor and thought I'd share his feedback.

If you just have a lymph node swelling on 1 side only and in 1 place only it is pretty much impossible to the Hodgkins Lymphoma (I only have the swelling on one side)

Mine is under my jaw - a very common area for more of a salivary gland blockage / problem - which I had an ultra-sound to look at, but there was nothing there. Apparently this problem can come and go. He also said this could be a mild bacterial infection that keeps bringing it back and has given me some antibiotics to try and tackle this.

He also has taken a blood test just to be sure.

I have also been told to lay off the white wine - drink something else, preferably a bit sweeter for a while. A bit of a detox would not I miss I think in this case and something I plan to encounter on next week (I'm going to a music festival this weekend, so not being too drastic here)

Anyway I read quite a few of the comments below and got extremely paranoid I had cancer and ran quickly as I could to the clinic. This really is very rare and you would generally have more than one or two swollen nodes / glands. Swollen Lymph nodes are most likely to be an infection and the need to slow down a bit if you are hard living (I did read some people could never go back to alcohol but my case does not seem so extreme, as I say, only really happens badly with white wine)

I would certainly visit a health practictioner, especially with any re-occuring cases, as I have done. But just hope some of my feedback can help put your mind at rest a little in the mean time.

I've been having the same issue for almost two weeks. After reading all of the replies on this subject I feel like I've found an answer to my problem. Two weeks ago I drank way tore than usual. The next day I had a "hangover" but never Kline this before. i could feel the swelling of my glands In my neck. The pain was radiating from the back of my ears down my neck to my shoulders. The pain was terrible! I felt like I was in a fight and lost. Then my throat felt like it was closing up on me making it difficult to breathe easily. For the first week I thought I caught a cold or the flu so I went to the doctor. I went because of the breathing issue. Ive had asthma since I was a child but it felt different. None of my inhalers were helping with the throat issue or the difficulty breathing because of the throat issue. My doc said continue eight the inhalers for another week. So now it's week two and the "hangover" symptoms finally went away ( dizziness, headaches, dehydration, etc) but my throat still feels like its closing up and I'm still not breathing right. i truly believe its from the alcohol consumption. However, in my case it's from the amount of alcohol I consumed. I drink vodka 2-3 times a week ( weekends) and have never had this issue. The day before all these symptoms started I consumed the same amount of vodka ( a different brand) that I would have consumed over 3 days. Not a regular thing for me and it will never happeangina in. It's a terrible feeling
