I recently had thyroidectomy for same problem and am very complicated medically. The voice loss/ damage happens abt 1% of the time. My big problem was hypocalcemia (low calcium) starting the next morning. My butt and hamstrings were vibrating which was muscle tremors. They did ionized calcium level and it was low. So I am now up to a ridiculous calcium and rocaltrol dose. So if you feel tremors, shaking - mention it and ask them to do your ionized calcium level.

Also, I have Ehlers Danlos syndrome and scarring is a major issue. I have a Plastic surgeon and the thyroid surgeon did what he recommened in addition to his ideas. He closed it in 2 layers and in the skin put about 40 thin, tiny sutures in. I had a drain and wanted one because there are many structures in the neck which are important and you could get a painful hematoma. I had it in for 3 days and more than 1/4 cup of drainage came out and that would have caused a lot of discomfort if it all collected in my neck. I did not even have a bruise!!! My Dermatologist gave me some Kelo. Cote to try this time to see if It helps with the scarring so I've tried that once sutures were removed.. For my tissues and all their problems - mine looks pretty darned good 3 weeks later.

You. Will likely be hoarse the first day or 2 ANYWAY. I brought in my own posicles, jello, etc and avoided dairy but brought in coconut milk. They cut one muscle that goes across center of throat and I had some pain swallowingfrom that. For 1st 3 days I just ate soothing foods that didn't take much chewing and soups. They also gave me ice packs which helped a. Lot. Most pain seemed to be fr the muscle I mentioned. I had no incision pain at all

I had lowest dose Fentanyl patch on for 1st 12 hours then extra strength tylenol.

Good luck!

Same with me. I just had a total thyroidectomy and 3 and a1/2 of my parathyroid glands removed. I write from my laptop as i sit in the hospital bed. It's been 2 weeks and one day. Since being discharged after my successful surgery, I've been admitted into the hospital twice. My calcium level won't stabelize. I'm also on dialysis which makes things a little more challanging. Doctors say I suffer from what they call "hungry bone"syndrome where my bones absorb the calcium because they've been without for so long. Until my bones have enough, my levels are gonna keep going up and down. I know what it feels like when your calcium level drops really low. It's terrible. I wish I never had the surgery but it was needed. There was a chance of cancer on my thyroid and I suffered from hyper- parathyroidism.

I had a thyroidectomy because my neck was the size of a football players. Originally diagnosed with hashimotos i took synthroid and was still tired. the doctors then prescribed what i thought was better for me, Armour thyroid. It was at that point that my neck blew up. Busy with children, all I knew was that I was tired. Back to the Doc's I go, he is not very happy and recommends surgery. Best Idea ever,I had surgery and was told ,my thyroid weight almost 2 grams and was wrapped around my voice box. If i had waited any longer who knows what would have happened. No one ever told me if the biopsy proved cancerous or not.

I had a thyroidectomy in 2009, around 2011 starting having the same problems. Informed Drs but they can't seem to help me. They want to prescribe something for every symptom. My worst problems is the constipation, disoriented thoughtsand thw stiffness. I have a hard time concentrating at work. I just feel my world has turned upside down.

I had a thyroidectomy in 2009. Up until 2011 I was doing fine, than all of a sudden the problems kicked in the hell you are going through, even the suicidal thoughts. Recently I have gained almost 30 pounds quiclkly having problems getting it off. I do understand what you are going through. There needs to a support group for us, so many are starting to get the same side effects. I hope you get back to normal as I hope to.

On November 15th, I had a total thyroidectomy/partial parathyroidectomy.  The surgery was due to Hurthle cell adenoma(r side) & Arterial constriction(l side).

Over the years, I have experienced many side effects of my thyroid malfunction: weight gain, heart palpitations, muscle tremor, dry & itchy skin, dry & thinning hair, clavicle swelling, pain, etc. I figured that getting the damned thing removed would be far better than subjecting myself to any more of those side effects.

The surgery was a breeze.  The recovery was far from easy.  I pretty much went clinically insane the week following surgery.  There was no balance of emotions; I was either crying or angry. When I say insane... let's just say that I had to be sedated.

My skin went through a barrage of changes.  I discovered that I was now allergic to my favorite soap & many of the cosmetics that I had been using for years.  I then developed dyshidrotic eczema on the soles of my feet.  The hives that broke out on my face, neck & torso were attributed to a zinc allergy aggravated by the vitamins that my doctor had prescribed. I never had any of these issues pre-surgery.

The newest accompaniment is the respiratory infection that has festered for the past 3 weeks.  I was always prone to colds, but do not remember any infections lingering for so long.

Aside from almost committing myself to a mental institution, having to drastically alter my skincare regime, changing my diet, and taking up a majority share of stock in Mucinex & antibiotics... I would do it all over again.

I know that I need to be checked on a regular basis & take my Levothyroxine/calcium every day. That's no big deal!  I am no longer worrying about CANCER!!!
