I'm going through a similar situation with my 13 month old right now and I'm sad to say I haven't found any answers either. We've seen several doctors and specialists (pulomonologist, cardiologist, nuerologist, gastrointestinologist, ear-nose-throat, it's ridiculous) since he was born and no one can give me an explanation, it's driving me crazy. The poor thing has had more ultrasounds and xrays than I've had in my life.

He was born with a partial collapse in his lung, which he was hospitalized for, then a month later he was hospitalized again for the flu. Since then he's been admitted three times, once for pneumonia, once for turning blue (a condition called acrocyannosis), and one time they couldn't tell me what was wrong with him except that there was something very wrong (he was unresponsive and they actually suspected paralysis until he somehow miraculously got better). After that it's been a landslide-colds, fevers, strep throat, croup, reflux (he just got off the meds for that), stomach bugs, gastrointestinal viruses (every doctor points out how distended his tummy is but no one ever seems to know why)...the list goes on. What's worse is every time I bring him in they tell me he developed a "secondary virus" from the one he had before. Honestly, how many times can you actually call it secondary?

We've had several theories, some of which helped others that didn't. It turns out he has asthma and eczema and A LOT of allergies, but even after seeing specialists and controlling these problems, he still seems to get sick every other week and it always lasts twice as long as it should. Right now we are on week three of some crazy respiratory virus that went away and came back two days later, he was actually SENT HOME from the ER with a 104.5 fever last week and tonight his fever is 104.4 so he has another appt tomorrow morning. He's had fluid in his ears now for a few weeks and had pink eye two weeks ago, and now he's developed bronchiolitis. I've had several doctors and nurses tell me how strange it is that he gets sick so often and yet I'm left clueless as to why.

Tomorrow I'm going to request a full workup of whatever it is these doctors look for because it's too much. I suggest you do the same if your little one is getting sick as often as that.

On another note, my son is not in daycare, never has been. Whether he's in daycare or not, something has to be going on for a baby to be getting so sick so often. I've had the same problems with my five year old when he was a baby and it took me driving out to Boston in the middle of the night to get some real answers(he had severe asthma which was being overlooked so it was a different situation). If that's what you have to do, then do it. As a mother, if you're not satisfied with what your child's doctor is telling you, get a second opinion. Call the specialists yourself! I called the pulmonologist myself for my baby after the doctor told me it probably wasn't necessary and thank goodness for it because he needed a breathing treatment on the spot when we got there.

Always trust your gut, Mama.

My son had some similar things. He is now 17mouths old. We found out he had a Vascular ring. Very rare. If I could give any advice it would be to be very persistent. If your not getting any answers go to a different doctor. Keep pushing to find out the right diagnois.

He may have allergies. My daughter would get high fevers (103) when allergy season started in the late winter and late fall. She would have bronchitis at least 2x a year and has had pneumonia 2x. Her pillow is in an allery pillowcase and her bed as well. Look at what time of year you son is getting sick as well.

I have a three year old and know just how you feel. I am a single mom and missing so much work due to my poor son being sick all the time. My heart breaks everytime. He has had soooo many test done and it is a constant battle. I think the doctors are tired of me and they have no answers. I don't know where to go from here. Once again he is vomiting and has a respitory infection. Had hives early in the week. I would love any advice as well.

I cannot say enough how much I agree with what has been said for trusting your instinct. Whatever you do, don't let anyone quiet concerns that you know are legitimate in your gut! We were on a very siminlar track with my 20 month old son. It took over a year to get answers and everything with him was very subtle. We kept going back for little nagging colds, ear infections, low weight gain (which most doctors said was probably related to being sick and on antibiotics so much), etc. A year later, we found out our son has an extremely rare set of chromosomal syndromes that even a nationally recognized geneticist did not believe and reran three separate times because of how unlikely it seemed. Who, by the way, I bullied my way in to seeing once I felt like we had exhausted all other options and relentlessly called until they squeezed us even though they had a 6 month waitlist. I am by no means saying your child does, but just saying...trust your gut. And definitely force the doctors to work together. Our pediatrician actually ordered the chromosome analysis for us at my request while we were waiting for our first appointment with the geneticist. My son now sees a pediatrician, developmental pediatrician, geneticist, endocrinologist, neurologist, ENT, immunologist, chiropractor and pulmonologist. When they give me the 'I don't know' answer individually, I make appointments for them to all speak to eachother. Shocking, right? Who would think that collaborating could be possible? It takes a lot of effort but once you get the specialists actually talking to each other and not just forwarding labs or using you as a (let's face it not so qualified depending on the level of medical expertise required) messenger. Ok stepping off the pedestal now! How this helped....two take aways are trust your gut and make the doctors work as a team!

Hi

i lived in hot temperatures(100 and above) all my life. We moved to chicago when my son was 18 months old. Since then he has been so sick in winters. He had flu, stomach virus twice, right on his 2nd bday, an ear infection and many colds. We felt miserable. he was again well and gained weight in the hotter months of june july august. He had a bad cold and cought for more than two weeks in this sep. He had 2 doses of anti biotic. In oct he is back with pneumonia which took a Week to go, yet he had a cough and a cold. ped prescribed anti histamine for cough. But he still has cold. He is in preschool from june.

Sometimes i really feel like a bad parent for moving to colder country, i dont know if i am right or wrong. I only want my child to be happy and healthy. he was born very healthy 8 pound baby. Now he lost some weight cause of illnesses and is 30lb at 34 months.

do you think viruses wouldnt survive in hot temperatures or is it his preschool. Atleast i feel i am not alone reading all the posts.

How would you suggest adjusting one's lifestyle if you have a mortgage, car payments and bills to pay? The way I am able to take care of my son is provide a roof over his head. . Some of us do not have a choice and have to work for a living and therefore need to send our children to daycare. I resent you saying that I am less of a mother because my child is in daycare, where he has a great time and is learning how to interact with other children. If you are lucky enough to be able to stay home with your children, then good for you. But don't assume those who send their children to daycare are any less of a mother than you.
