An excellent overview of what to expect. I am 49 years old and on day 5 of my tonsillectomy and totally agree that ice cream and any other frozen smoothie is the most searingly painful thing you can eat and gives you the worst gunk in your mouth. I have never salivated so much in my life, which of course necessitates more excruciatingly painful swallowing, but I have found an ingenious device. Its called the Oolitt tongue scraper and its bendy and can be shaped into a u and put to the back of your tongue, getting rid of most of the nasty stuff and phlegm that's back there. Of course, don't go too far back. I agree with the writers pain scale thus far and can liken my experience on day 4 and 5 only to that of perhaps having your tongue ripped out by the roots. But in the long run, I know it will be worth it.

I've been all over the internet looking for something like this and this has helped me so much!
I wasn't at all nervous going into surgery because it didn't bother me so much, I was just exited to get it over with and the surgery was FINE nothing hurt for a few days for me which I was really really lucky with, but just on my 6th day I started getting pain in my ear which hurt so bad I would lay on the ground and kick my wall just in excruciating pain and today is day 7 for me and it hurts again, I cannot eat or drink ANYTHING otherwise I'm stuck with the worst pain in my ear for a good half an hour so I've been very hungry and weak and I'm very exited to get my scabs coughed out although I'm not going to force it but all I want to say is THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS.

so im 16 and ever since i was 8 or 9 i noticed tonsil stones and would get them out with various ways as you said. well i finally told my mom about it about a month and a half ago and she thought i was nuts, and took me to a doctor to show me it was just in my head will he told my mom i was right and had rather large holes in my tonsils and referred me to a ENT doc (ears, nose and throat). He told me i defiantly qualified for the surgery of getting my T&A out. and i got them out this past mon on the 21.
After the surgry i was great havin fun , eating ice and everything

2nd day i woke up and it felt like i had slept on my neck wrong and my ears felt like they needed to be popped

3rd day i think alls i did was cry and take medicine and i actually tried the whole let water trickle down ur throat without swallowing, didn't work ... little did i no i was only at about a 6 on that scale of yours

day 4 y i spent in a dase because i hurt so bad

day 5 (yesterday) i noticed my medicine is only lasting about 2 hours and i have to wait 4 before i can take another dose and i find my self in excruciating pain the other 2 and my ears feel like there about to explode

today i had to cough and when i did i ripped my scab and started bleeding ... great but it honestly hurts less then it did before but the bloods making my stomach hurt.

i think through all this pain i will still be better off cuz as you said i wont have to always have gum in my mouth and drink mouth wash like water .. i will be some what normal ... well worth it

My Name is Mill. I had my tonsillectomy on 2/10/2012. So today is my 4th day. I have to say I was starting to forget why I did this surgery to begin with. All these posts gave me hope. I have never had surgery before and I am 21 years old. I took all the doctors advise prior to surgery. Got my humidifier, ice jugs, water, and ice packs ready. I really can not stress how much you need to drink water. If I nap I wake up with some blood in my mouth( because the throat is drying out). It is extremely hard to open my mouth and make sure I'm not bleeding. It's easier to swallow jello with foods. I tried eating eggs which my doctor approved...lets just say they got stuck in the new holes in my mouth so I wouldn't do it again! Anything besides luigis flavored ice, jello, and chicken soup I would not attempt. I have not bleed much but my jaw does is tighter by the day. Definitely chew gum and keep that humidifier pumping. I got this done because of constant tonsil stones along with nasal infections and tonsillitis. If your getting this done please keep in mind this is to better your life. In the end you will not regret it. Also have a loved one take care of you. my mom and I are not that close but she is taking great care of me!

My Name is Mill. I had my tonsillectomy on 2/10/2012. So today is my 4th day after surgery. I have to say I was starting to forget why I did this surgery to begin with. I had a break down and cried to my mom because of my difficulty breathing. All these posts gave me hope. I have never had surgery before and I am 21 years old. I took all the doctors advice prior to surgery. Got my humidifier, ice jugs, water, and ice packs ready. I really can not stress how much you need to drink water. If I nap I wake up with some blood in my mouth (because the throat is drying out). It is extremely hard to open my mouth and make sure I'm not bleeding. Also your going to feel like theirs leftover food in ur mouth. It's either phlegm, scabs or food. Just try to swallow, spitting it up is way harder. I can't get anything back up over my tong because its swollen.  It's easier to swallow jello and not food food. I tried eating eggs which my doctor approved...lets just say they got stuck in the new holes in my mouth so I wouldn't do it again! I wish I could tell her though. I still do not have my voice.

I'm day 15 post tonsillectomy right now and it looks as if there are two small bumps left on one side where the removed my tonsils. I can't figure out what they are. They look exactly like part of my throat... They don't look like a scab. Can anyone lead me in the right direction as to what this is?

I had my tonsils and anoids removed about 1 week ago from 3/30/12 and if I would have know all the pain that came with it I WOULD NOT HAVE DONE IT! My surgeon didn't tell me anything! They have me apple juice in the post-op room before I left and it just burnt so bad. I also woke up crying from surgery and threw up after they gave me powerade. The pain the first few days was just unbearable... I slept non-stop for about a week only getting up to eat a sherbert take a sip of tea to get a pain pill and the steroids down and go back to sleep. About two nights ago I have started throwing up mucus and this has went on for about 3 days now.... it is absolutely awful. I have to hack and everything to get it out but my throat doesn't feel as bad now. I have recently started drinking gatorade and it has started helping me some, I have only ate about 1-2 cups of sherbert or italian ice a day and maybe a whole bowl of soup in this whole process. I just cant get it down.... I have been trying to drink more because I am just soooo dehydrated! As soon as I drink I throw up. It's all phlegm though. The scabs in the back of my throat are absolutely dreadful! They taste awful, just the smell of them makes me sick... and I have never been real sensitive to smells. (I am a tech in a nursing home). I am hoping my scabs will fall off soon but noone seems to have the real timeline they will fall off.... Mine are like a greenish white right now. I wish so horribly for them to fall off because I go back to work Monday night and I just dread having to be puking constantly..... I just want to be able to suck me down a huge dr pepper and eat real food! None of my clothes fit me anymore including my undergarments. I just wish my surgeon would have told me the truth when I scheduled. He said I would probably feel like going back to work on the 3rd day! HA YEAH RIGHT! I only took a week off and am now wishing I would have took 2-3 weeks off because I am dreading going back due to all the throwing up and all. My whole body aches all night from cramping from the dehydration and the only thing that helps is cold showers....... Thanks for you post wish I would have found it before I went and had the surgery performed. I have just had an awful experience with this surgery than as normal obviously, sorry about all the complaining.

Yes this article has given me insight on how to deal with the post op. I am 25 years old and it is day 7 for me, the pain has gone worse, I'm on brufen as a pain killer along with an antibiotic, the pain had decreased on day 5 but its up again.. Im eating almost normal foods minus the spices and oils. I'm dying for a pizza and fried fish fingers... the wait is killing me.

Can barely wait for Day 15.....
Thanks for your help :D

Thank you for your post, it definitely helped me. I am on day 3 right now and pretty much hate life. I had the same problem (tonsil stones) constantly worrying about my breath and those disgusting stones at all times.
Knowing that it's worth it in the end makes me feel a lot better, I am just extremely nervous for the upcoming days!

Wow.... You poor thing ! My daughter who is 16 and is on day 4. I didn't know how to help her so I hit the internet. By FAR your information is the best. Your the only person that broke it down by day ! THANK YOU ! Looks though we are on target. Her fourth day has been HELL for her. I felt so bad and helpless. She did not eat much today. She has already almost drank a case of water. Its at room temperature. I am hopeful tomorrow will be better for her :( She does not talk a lot and uses note pad. She complains of ear pain. Based on what everyone has posted ....ear pain is typical. I just cant stand not to be able to comfort her. I am praying tomorrow will be a better day. Thank you for all your information. I am book marking this one. God Bless!

Hi thank you for this great summary of your experience. I'm on day 21 and still have some scabs. How long did it take you before scans were completely gone?
I can't stand the taste in my mouth from them! Thanks

Thank you for this.!! I am going through my 9th day and the reason i've been coughing has been cleared. I'm getting really weak without being able to eat I have lost 25 pounds. Lately I will choke occasionaly and almost throw up. Do you think my scabs fell of? I spit out a little blood yesterday but not any scabs. Is it possible for the scab to fall off without you hardly noticing?
