I had many bleeds 2-3 table spoons avg worth each time.

1st after eating solidish foods to early.

2nd after dry throat while sleeping.

3rd after eating warm soup to soon

and others similar situations.

never went to ER just stuck it out and Iced ( My doc said bleeding is okay up to 2 tables spoons maybe a little more as long as it stops and coagulates; its the not stopping that needs to be fixed)

My fix was liquids and staying away from warm everything.

1 cup water every hour and 1 cup ever 2-3 hours sleeping (set alarm and wake up to drink)

No warm showers near neck

No warm soup or such

Minimize talking

Minimize spitting to keep mouth moist

Basically hydrate and keep moist and bleeding will be minimal and fine.

the ear aches suck after surgery though. >.<

Oh yeah all my pain has been almost none, no meds after surgery even though perscribed, just tylonal before eating on first 3 days

Coblation FTW!

I went to the ER this after noon for bleeding. I was trying to cook some food and out of the blue I felt a rush in my mouth and out came lots of blood. I had about 50cc just in no sink where I initially started. Doctor fixed it then sent be a few hours kater

So, I had my tonsils out about 2 weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to be in one of the best hospitals in the country. At first it was fine, painful but fine. I had gone in with a mild stomach bug, but they assured me this wouldn't effect the surgery.  My first few days of recovery were normal, painful but I spent most of it in a daze.  On the 4th day after my surgery I began to feel weak, and infact passed out.  Once  I woke up I began to vomit violently until I collapsed on the floor. I was taken  to the hospital right away and was  kept for three nights. Once  I was released I had begun to finally feel like I was healing.  On around my 11th day I had finally felt back to normal. I was eating soft but normal solid foods, pasta's grilled cheeses and it seemed to have no effect, my pain was mild and controlled by  tylenol and ibuprofen. That night around midnight, I took a sip of water and I began tasting blood. The bleeding didnt stop. I bleed at least 2 measuring cups of blood while the emt's were stabilizing me to get to the hospital. In the ambulance I bled about 1/4 of a cup more until a blood clot formed at the bleeding sight, preventing further blood loss. When I got to the hospital the doctor assessed that I would need a second surgery to cauterize the wound, and prevent further blood loss, they took me in and this procedure was really simple. I went to sleep and woke up feeling less pain then I felt before the bleeding started. They said it should only be a mild setback to my healing. I was just wondering what others experienced. Did it set you guys back on healing? When did you begin to eat normally again? Its been two days since my latest hospitalization but I seem to be doing well.

Hi everyone. I just had a tonsillectomy eight days ago. I was just brushing my teeth and while I was rinsing noticed the right ride of my throat was bleeding. It's been about fifteen minutes later and the blood is barely coming out anymore. (Its a little pink when i spit.) But the entire right side of my throat where the scabs is is now dark red. Is that normal? Is it just from the scabs absorbing the blood? Should I call my doctor? Go to the hospital?

Im 34 yrs old female who just had a tonsillectomy and adenoids removed Nov, 8 2013. Day one was not too bad, just groggy from being put to sleep. Probably slept most of the day away and felt that healing time would be a piece of cake. How WRONG I was! I was a good girl and did everything was suppose to do. I ate/drank only clear liquids ( ice water, Gatorade, chicken broth) days 1-4. Day 5 I added some mashed potatoes and gravy, baby food ( I know that sounds gross but baby food fruits and sweet potatoes are pretty good. Yes I'm a mommy too lol!) but I still kept 64 oz of water down and sipped light on water all day to keep my throat moist. I began having pain on day three so my best fried was my liquid pain med that was prescribed to my by my ENT. ( pain as in : sore throat, sore tongue, sore joints, ear pain that was mostly in the right ear, uvula was sore as well) Day 4 I had very light bleeding and my tongue and uvula were swollen and just plain old sore!!! I was prescribed steroids which lead to a white irritated burnt feeling tongue ( thrush) by day 5. ( I took my last steroid on day 6) Because of the thrush, I began lightly swishing with warm salt water 4 times daily or more and eating unsweetened organic yogurt. ( thrush was cleared up by day 8 after). I saw my ENT specialist day 7). He said everything was healing just beautifully and that I should continue with the soft food diet for one more week. Wonderful! That night, however, I woke up at 11:56pm. I was in the Worst pain I had experience through out the whole ordeal!!! I took my liquid pain med and about 40 mins late I was finally able to rest. Next day day 8, I began having some light bleeding. No big deal. I just rinsed with warm salt water and drank ice water to stop the bleeding. Worked like a charm. 10 pm on Day 8, decided to watch a movie with the hubby since kiddos were asleep. We chose We're The Millers! So I'm sitting on the couch, when I start drooling on myself! Only to find out it was blood. Rushed to the bathroom and that's when it happened! I was bleeding heavily from the right side. I filled the sink up within minutes. Not to mention I was choking on blood and it began coming out my nose as well. My husband called our ENT specialist then rushed me to the ER. By that time I had already filled 7 throw baggies with blood and some vomit as well as about a quarter of a 5 gal bucket! I ened up having to be transferred to another hospital where they were able to put me back to sleep and recauterize the left and right side. ( they had to redo the left side because the throw up caused tears). The doctor explained it was normal for this to happen.... WHAT! I was never told this!! So here I am, day 9 and I'm back to square one with healing time. Thankfully I requested to be off three weeks instead of two so that I might have another week of healing time. Hopefully nothing else begans to bleed. Good luck to any of you who is or just had your tonsillectomy!

Hello All,  I had a horrible experience with my 10 yr old son at Childrens Primary in Utah.  After getting his tonsils out at a different hospital, my son started to sit up throwing up large amounts of blood. We called his Doctor and was told it was normal etc.  Again and again for 2 days he threw up blood all over.  Finally rushed him to ER.  They did not believe us. I should have brought his pots and cups full of blood to the ER.  The doctor scoffed at us like we were liars. Finally as they were kicking us out my son exploded again with throw up of blood.  Tests showed he needed a blood transfusion!  Back into surgery they had to cauterize again and finally got it done. To this day I have so much hate and ager for the Doctor there scoffing at me like I was a liar.  Be careful get them in and fight with these Doctors, bring all the blood with you!  My son almost didn't make it!

I had my tonsils removed and on day 3 had to go to the ER because of the bleeding. You said you had to be put to sleep and get it cauterized, well I went to my ENT and they operated on me there, they were lacking the needed materials to put me to sleep so he had to cauterize while gagging me so it hurt beyond belief, but the main purpose of this was to tell you it will get better.

I had a adnoidectomy/tonsillectomy on may 21st 2014.. 9 days later I bled a bit and went into the er. They cauterized me with silver nitrate on the right side and than the left side started bleeding and so he chastised that side too. They watched me for an hour and sent me home. I wasn't even home an hour and I started gushing blood out. Spit up all over the sink and a trash can. I went to the er. They took me in, took all my vitals and than sent me into the OR. I had surgery. Oh I did throw up and gag a bunch before surgery and as I woke up out of anesthesia, I chucked a bunch of blood again. Throughout the surgery they had a hard time stopping my bleeding. After surgery everything was fine. I felt great, they kept me for the weekend, and I was let go at the end of the weekend. Now it's Thursday June 5th and I woke up with some bleeding, my tonsils were covered in red. So I gargled for a while and still spit up blood. So I went to the er. I'm sitting here, and they told me they see a bit of clotting, but drink ice water and keep hydrated. They're watching me for an hour. Ive been spitting clear but my tonsils feel odd and are still covered in blood. They will soon let me out and later this morning I hope to get into the doc's office. I'm hoping that I dont have to have a third more extensive surgery. Pray for me please. I have a pregnant wife, due in 2 months and I need to heal and go to work. Otherwise it's all bad. I need prayer and help!

Seeing these posts have brought back some unforgetful memories. In June of 2008 I had a tonsillectomy procedure complete. About one week after the procedure was complete all seemed normal until that night when I went to sleep. I woke up at around midnight throwing up blood and spitting up quarter sized blood clots. My mom immediately called my doctor and was told to take me to the ER. After a few blood tests were complete I was put under and had my throat cauterized to stop the bleeding. Following the procedure I would still spit up blood occasionally, but all eventually ended in a positive manner. By far the most unpleasent medical procedure I have ever had done.

Yes. I had my tonsils out 56 years ago and about a week later threw up clots of blood - big chunks of semi-congealed blood.

This sounds exactly like my son. He had his surgery on a Tuesday and Saturday and Sunday was really bad. He started bleeding a little Sunday night, but we got it under control by ice water. Unfortunately Monday afternoon he was attempting to eat and started bleeding again, only worse. He's back at square one too.

Question: but if they cauterized the entire back of your throat. Are you able to breath in and out through your nose?
