I'm 17 And it's been exactly a week since my tonsillectomy. Yesterday Day 6, I was having a conversation with my sister and out of no where started choking on something, it was a scab piece I look in the mirror at the back of my throat and seen little blood. I was able to stop it in a blink of an eye. The next day , Monday Day 7 I was getting ready for school it would've been my first day back. Dressed and all for school I'm about to brush my teeth but my instinct tells me to check on my throat and when I do it a big blood area just dripping down my throat, I spit it out constantly for 15 minutes as the nurse told me to not panick but I'm so afraid now I've read people were able to stop it with no problem and the next day throwing up blood almost nearly dying that's tragic I pray Thats not my situation

Had the surgery, on 10th March 2015. 15th March 2015 woke up, felt the left side extremely dry and pain, take a look, and the whole patch was covered with dark red dried blood. Cough out couple of blood clots. thought it's minor bleed do didnt card about it, used the throat gurgle as doc advise to reduce pain.

18th March 2015, has a follow up review with ENT, said it's healing well, the wound are drying up.

22th March 2015 (after 12 days) while sleeping halfway, felt throat something dripping and choking, did a cough in the washroom, and cough out blood and blood clots and blood just keep oozing and can even felt it dripping. Went to ER, on call ENT uses toold to suck out the blood and blood clots. use glaze to hold on the wound bed, and apple nitre stick to burn the part. then stopped, observed for 12 hours and was discharge.

23rd March 2015, same sleeping haflyway, felt throat dripping, split out blood again, uses ice water to try stop the bleeding, it stopped. But once lie down on bed, it stars to drip again! Sae, using ice water and ice pact to stop bleeding, this time don't dare to lie down. Try to rest sitting up, but after awhile start again, Rush to ER, on call ENT perform the same procedure, but still not able to stop as the wound bed is much lower down. Went to emergency ops, and cauterize it again. Now warded for observation for 2 days. Pray that it will heal and not happens again..

This sounds like what happened to me. I had my tonsils out in the 24th of March at 8am. Around 1pm that afternoon I experience severe bleeding. After an hour it was still bleeding so we called the surgeon and I was rushed into surgery-which of course has altered my healing process. Last week I was on holiday far away from a hospital and experienced severe bleeding again so the next day I went home and saw the surgeon. He re cauterised my wound with silver nitrate and removed a clot that was there and I am still bleeding sometimes, I'm not sure when it's going to stop but the pain has stopped. It definitely sucks to have all these complications, I know how you feel!!

I just had mine out. They took me back I woke up next to a nurse she immediately say me up and blood started pouring from my throat and nose. She was shoveling ice into my mouth and I kept insisting I couldn't breathe and she told me to just breathe out my mouth ! finally she called the doctor to come back since he had already left. He took a flash light and tweezers and pulled a huge blood clot from my throat blocking my air way ! Then knocked me back out ! I was so happy the bleeding was gone when I woke up and I could finally see my daughter ! He said this kinda thing rarely ever happens !

Cauterization with silver nitrate while awake it not painful. The whole procedure is less painful for children, anyways. I had my clots removed while I was awake, without numbers, and then was cauterized with silver nitrate at 17 following tonsillectomy and no matter what your pain threshold it isn't a painful experience, I don't know what your sons problem was.

Incorrect and out of date. IB Profen has coagulants that thicken the blood and would help with the stopping of prolonged bleeding. Also in this case now they don't require in Profen over Tylenol anymore. That is out of date. I checked with my ent the day of my Tonnsillectomy which was only 7days ago.

Only on day 4 of having my tonsils removed. I've had the worst pain... Haven't been able to swallow the pain medication due to it burning the inside of my throat and coming out of my nose. I then took Hydrocodone, and found out I was allergic. Luckily I haven't bled, and hopefully I won't. We will see.

Hi! I had something very similar when I had my tonsils out (when I was 12). I got some bleeding on day 6, but then it went away with some ice and water. The next night (day 7) at about midnight I woke up choking on my blood. I couldn't yell for my parents, but somehow I got them to come (I don't remember how). There was a lot of blood, so they gave me a big metal mixing bowl and rushed me to the ER. When I got there I was covered in blood, and rushed to a bed right away. I don't remember much after that, but I needed two bags of blood and they hooked me up to some other stuff. What I do remember is suddenly have an unbearably stabbing pain, and then I vomited up huge chunks of blood. They rushed me too surgery, and on the way I once again threw up a ton of blood. After that, I really have no memory until the next afternoon. I was in awful pain, worse than the initial surgery. I stayed in the hospital for days. They also told me that me that my recovery time (2 weeks) had to start over. It was awful! And yes, you need those weeks. if you stress your body too much, it could bleed again.
