I am a 18 year old male and i had a tonsillectomy on May 13, 2009. I am now on the 6th day of recovery and since yesterday i have been experiencing extreme pain.

This unbearable pain is only present when i swallow soft foods at a certain angle. When im just sitting or doing nothing, the is little to no pain. Drinking lukewarm water produces pain but is very much bearable.

It is only when i eat foods that happen to rub against a small area of the tonsil pit, specifically the tiny area right under the tongue against the tonsil fossa.

When ever anything touches this sensitive spot it gives me a gut wrenching sharp yet blunt pain that instantly catches my attention. It requires me to sit still for a minute just to grasp what had just happened.

I have a feeling it might be a nerve because the pain from direct nerve contact would radiate around the area.

Any one experience this? If so let me know how it went for you.

Thanks.

As far as I can tell, what you are experiencing is a normal part of the recovery process for a tonsillectomy. Unfortunately it will probably be a bit of time before you start to feel normal again. I think that if the pain is unbearable though that you should consult a physician to see if there's anything you can get for the pain so that you can eat. If it turns out to be something abnormal, they can diagnose that then as well. I wish you the best--keep us posted, please!

Thank you for your reply. It is quite relieving to know that this is a normal part of the recovery process. I was more afraid that I had done something horriable wrong during the last few days.

Any one have a idea how much longer I will subjected to this pain? To give a time line, it started about day 5, got profressivly worse on the 6th, and now on the morning of the 7th I can hardly drink water.

Does any one know why the pain gets worse on these few days? I heard that this is when scabs fall off, is it the process that hurts? Or, is it be ause there is no longer a protective coating.

How long should I wait before I see a physician. I get free health care here in Ontario but since i don't have a car and my parents work long hours I really need to time my appointment accordingly.

Thank you very much. The pain is awful but I'm sure it will pay off.
