Hi,

I’m 23 years old, I had my tonsils out on Tuesday 3rd June. So will be a week tomorrow…

Like everyone else has said I felt pretty zoned out the first couple of days and slept most of the time so didn’t really feel too much pain. On Day 3, 4 and 5 - I felt the worst pain by far, that I’ve ever experienced in my life! I’m Miss Accident prone, I’ve had 11 stitches in my head, been bitten by a dog and have been run over twice. So I’m no stranger to testing the limits of my pain thresh hold.

BUT even with the pain, it is still bearable to what I am feeling now! Since last night I have not been able to keep anything down. Yeah my throat really hurts, blah blah I’m sooo over it now. I just want to stop being sick?? I can’t eat (which hasn’t happened for about 4 days anyway) sleep (been up since 4am), read, watch TV… or ANYTHING but cry. I was solely surviving on Water and Iced Pops, but if I so much as had a sip of water right now I’m back in the toilet?

Is this normal after tonsillectomy, to get ill? Should I inform my GP? I don’t want to take anymore Tablets because I’ll be ratterling soon?

Hope you feel better then I do, I wouldn’t wish this on my worst enemy.

If you are still getting sick cal your doctor, I was in the same boat and the re admitted me.
I feel for you I know how painful it is to be sick during this horrible time.
Good Luck!!

I haven't seen that much about the electrocautery method of removing tonsils on here. They burn them out instead of cutting them so that the risk of post op bleeding is lessened. While it is great that I am not bleeding, I am having the worst pain I have ever experienced. I was fine from the first day of the surgery up until the 6th day. I was drinking bottles and bottles of water, even eating very small bites of soft sandwiches and mac n cheese.

Now, since day 6, I cannot even drink water without bursting into tears. I cannot talk for longer than two minutes. It is because of the severe burning sensation I feel when I do these things. I have read that burning the tonsils out rather than cutting them causes the patient to have a more difficult recovery time and this is NO joke.

I just wanted to tell anyone who is experiencing the same kind of pain that I am that cannot even bear to drink water because it hurts too bad that the ONLY thing that does not burn like HELL when I put it down my throat has been warm broth. It is sort of like a meal and sort of gives you water so it's better than not eating or drinking which is what I have been doing since I cannot bear the pain.

I am on Lortab (which is a joke. this does NOTHING to subdue the pain and when I called my doctor, they said they couldn't give me anything else)

Has anyone else had them burned out and feels the same kind of pain??

Boy I am glad I was not the only one thinking that a tonsillectomy was painfull. I have had six different types of surgery(2-c-section, open gastric bypass, hernia repair, ect..) and I in all truthfulness the tonsillectomy killed me. Pain wise, food wise and talking wise. I am 30 yrs old and had my on May 23, 2008. So that make is it almost 4 weeks now. I still have problem swallowing and have no taste of any kind for food. Basically soup and hot tea are the only thing I can really enjoy. Everything else I can NOT really taste or enjoy. I also have a dry and tight feeling in my throat. But all I can say is hang in there. And for those who said it was a piece a cake be glad that your blessed but it takes more to endure pain and harship then to breeze through it.

its so nice to not feel alone for once!!!
I was on tylenol 3 until this morning when I saw my surgeon and he decided to give me percocets so that I could drink enough water to stay out of the hospital. I've had a rather rough week since last thursday and seemed to be getting worse.

Last night had to be the climax with my sitting awake in the bathroom with searing pain in my throat and ears as i tried to swallow and spit out scab

6 year old daughter had tonsils and adenoids out on Tuesday morning. Awoke from anestesia crying/screaming. After 15 min fell asleep. Awoke 2 hrs later feeling good. Talked funny as if there was swelling but pain not bad. Went home. Gave her Moltrin. Ate popsicals & some ice chips. Gave tylenol w/codeine that night. Vomited that night so decided to stick with Moltrin every 6 hrs.
Day 2 - swelling, would not talk, ate tons of ice chips, only slight pain, good mood. Gave moltrin every 6 hrs except if sleeping.
Day 3 - Woke up with lots of mucous in throat. Threw up mucous 3 times this morning. Felt better. Still swelling, talked but sounded funny from swelling, ate lots of ice chips. Ate some soft foods like Ramen soup, squash. Good mood. Continued with Moltrin every 6 hrs. Complains she's hungry but painful to eat. Seems to want salty foods - no interest in ice cream & pops. Eats best about half hour after taking Moltrin.
Day 4 - Still talked funny, continued eating soft foods (following dose of Moltrin), did not eat ice chips anymore, drank some but not tons. Only slight pains unless trying to eat, pain lessoned following the Moltrin. That night woke with bad ear pain, crying. Gave Tylenol (not w/ codeine) because too soon for Moltrin. She awoke again & gave Moltrin. Moltrin works better that Tylenol. Still has pain but is bearable after taking Moltrin. Ice pack eased pain a little.
Day 5 - continued with ear, throat pain. Crying from pain. Moltrin took pain away but relief did not last for 6 hrs. Ate after taking Moltrin (soft foods like soup, hot dog cut in very small pieces). Gave Tylenol in between the doses of Moltrin (this worked only a little). That night, woke up in middle of night with ear pain. Gave her Moltrin 1 hr early. Awoke again a few hrs later. Gave her Tylenol. Continued w/ice pack as well.
Day 6 - we are now on day six and hoping things are better today.

Right. I had my tonsils out last friday at about 4pm. I was absolutely fine that day, I felt a bit drowsy from the meds they had given me but other than that I was fine. There wasen't a whole lot I could eat regarding hospital food as I am vegan, but I had a cucumber sandwich, that went down fine, and chips, and after that another cucumber sandwich. But in the morning I woke up and could not speak, It was really quite painful, being forced to eat toast so you can go home is NOT nice when your throat feels like you are swallowing razors!

Day two (yesterday)-
Hurts a lot! A lot of trouble swallowing, and I cannot speak much at all and when I do I have periods of intense pain.
Oh how I wish I could have brought the morphine back with me from the hospital. The meds they gave me seem to be doing absoultely nothing!
I have eaten mashed potatoes and veg gravy and falafels with went down alright as I seem to have 30 minute stages of feeling and swallowing alright.

Day three (the freaky day)-
Only just yesterday, I was feeling pretty much the same as day two. If not worse. I have had 8 paracetamols and gosh knows how many other tablets today (which were awful to swallow). They made NO difference to my throat.
Later on that night I began spitting my spit out as my mouth was making way too much, I looked into the cup and there was yellowish/whiteish blobs in there. I was freaking out.
I think shone some light down my throat from a lamp and held a mirror up so I could see down there, the whole of the back of my throat was covered in Yellow and white mucus, it was pretty disgusting actually, to think that, that stuff is in my mouth all the time.

Day 4-
Well I am sat here typing this as I cannot sleep.. eat.. drink. I really hope this gets better. I am beginning to wonder why I would let myself go through this pain.. Sooo sore.

Not sure how many days it will take to get better. If anyone has any idea? reply.
Thanks, Hayley. :-( :'( :-( :'( >:( :-( :cry

I had my tonsils out Monday, July 7th and it is now Friday night. When will the pain even subside?? And, is anyone's tongue swollen with sores? No one mentioned that your tongue will be just as bad as your throat. The only solid thing I have managed to get down is a little bit of mac and cheese. Other than that it's only been water, jello, jello pudding and yogurt. People tell me it took them 3 weeks to fully recover. Ugh!! I can't sleep longer than 3 hour increments. Then, I need to get up and spit and cough and clear my throat. I've never had so much flem and saliva before. The flem just sits at the back of my throat, not moving either way, and it makes it hard to breathe. Luckily, I haven't had any vomiting, and I'm trying to stay hydrated by drinking water.
Looking forward to strep free and pain free days!!

Hello everyone,

I'm a 22 year old male. I kept getting frequent strep, so it was time to have them removed before school.

I had my tonsils removed on July 8th. I woke up from the surgery and was making jokes with the nurses about how I had a marathon to run at 4 o'clock and they were keeping me here too long. I came home and felt pretty good, I was eating Jell-O, broth, soup, and soft foods.

Days 2-3. Good days, still eating very well and drinking about 5-7 gatorades a day, I've been on my pain meds and am starting to think I am an exception to this pain stuff everyone is talking about.

Day 4-5. The pain sets in. The pain, like everyone describes, feels like swallowing razors. I've been hydrating like crazy, but even water is extremely painful. I get a nice taste of blood every once in a while, although I've noticed it only little. I'm running out of pain meds (Lortab), so I am rationing it as best as possible...which is making this whole pain management thing no better. I have a bit of phlem in the back of my throat which keeps popping when I breath, but I'm afraid to clear my throat and have it start bleeding like crazy. The only other surgery I've had is my wisdom teeth, which I think was a walk in the park compared to this. I feel rather hopeless actually, here's to hoping days 7-8 will have a refilled prescription and much less pain in stock.

What I meant to ask, is why on earth does the Lortab burn so much when you take it? The anti-biotics are fine, but the Lortab burns the razors!

I'm 29 years old and just had my tonsils removed 3 days ago. I've had strep and tonsillitis infections over and over again my whole life......but the doctors finally decided to remove my tonsils to hopefully releive my sleep apnea.

Whatever the reason....I'm grateful to have them gone but the recovery does suck.

I have to admit that the pain is not nearly as bad as I thought it might be. I only speak for me on this subject. I've had worse pain from some of my infections............but this pain does still suck!

The worst thing about this for me is the swelling. My uvula, soft palate and the tissue on the left side of my throat is so swollen! I can't drink any liquid without feeling like I'm choking, so I have to stick to ice and popsicles. I also can not sleep in a horizontal position. I can feel my uvula and soft palate falling back and blocking my airway.

Also....half of my tongue (the left half) is still swollen and numb. It's so uncomfortable. Has anyone else experienced this? I can't wait for my tongue to feel normal again.

I do have a few suggestions for any of you still recovering or are having surgery soon.

1.) Buy a snow cone machine!
-This is seriously the best suggestion I received before my surgery. Because I'm having trouble with liquids period the little ice chips from the snow cone maker have saved my life. When I have to take my medications I sip a little of the medication and then put a spoonful of ice chips in my mouth and let them melt down the back of my throat and wash down the medicine. I suppose you could use your blender if you have a good one but I didn't want to chance dulling my blades on my blender so I bought the Hamilton Beach Icy Treats Maker ($30.00......again....the best purchase ever!) If you are having surgery soon....buy a snow cone maker......if you are having surgery in the fall.......buy one now while everyone still has them in stock.

2.) Gatorade, Life Water and or Vitamin Water
-Even though I can't swallow any liquids I freeze these in an ice cube tray and run then through my snow cone maker. This way I still get electrolytes. Too much water only can lead to a hospital visit because of a sodium or potassium deficiancy. Don't just take my word for it.....look it up yourself.

3.) Liquid Ibuprofen/Acetaminophen
-You should check with your doctor first before adding any meds during your recovery. My prescribed pain medication (liquid Oxycodone) doesn't do much for my throat pain. I had a feeling it wouldn't. Narcotic analgesics have never done much for me so I asked my doctor before the surgery and he suggested liquid Ibuprofen. Yes it does work.....although I expect the potentcy to start wearing off over the next few days because of how often I'm taking it. Just a hint that may help: I take the liquid Ibuprofen at night and first thing in the a.m. and take the liquid Acetaminophen during the day. The Acetaminophen doesn't work quit as well on me so I save the Ibuprofen for the evening so I can sleep. Also...just a warning......the bubblegum flavors are better than the others......at least in my opinion.....and the liquid ibuprofen does sting a little in the back of the throat.

3.) Really soft pasta. (ex. Top Ramen)
-Other people have suggested this same thing and I wanted to give it some credit. For me.....when the ramen is warm.....not hot.....it is completely tolerable and actually feels a little good sliding down the back of my throat. And........it gets rid of that "starving" feeling! Yeah! What hurts the most is opening my mouth to get the pasta in......it takes me about 1.5hours to eat a bowl....no kidding.....really.

I hope some of these suggestions helps some of you. I am grateful for this and other forums. It really helps knowing that other people have gone through the same thing as you. Everyone is very supportive and all the ideas and different experiences have helped a lot. I wish you all the best and wish me luck on the rest or my recovery!

Im 20 and had my tonsils and a large lump on the side of my neck removed on july 31st

A warning to people that are going to have it done:

You wont be able to:

yawn
blow your nose
sniff
sneeze
hiccup
push out a poo
cough
open your mouth wide
swallow siliva
anything that strains your neck
laugh
sleep
eat much
drink much
take inhaler (which is scary cos I have astma and I really need it right now!)

It has got worse every day. Now I wake up in extreme pain and not easy to breath, and taking my medication doesn't seem to help. Ive been told to take paracetamol (which I have now built an immunity) and Dicloflex (anti inflammatory) 3 times a day.

Its nice to hear other people going through the same thing. I dont think people realize just how painful this operation is.

I could eat on day 3 but the evenings now are unbearable. my whole mouth aches and i can't swallow anything. My doc said if i dont eat properly then my throat can build up with gunk and it can get infected. Lose lose situation..

I hope it doesn't get any worse, because when its bad at the moment, it feels like its hopeless, i don't know what to do with myself. even crying hurts.

I'm hearing you Jim Jam! I had my op on the 30th July- the pain yesterday and today has been the worst, I'm in tears because of it. I find if I take my meds, then gargle with Difflam to numb the area I can manage a few mouthfuls of food- try it maybe? I just want to be better :-( I feel like this pain is unbearable

I went to the docs today and they replaced my paracetamol with cocodanol. which is stronger.

She asked if i had been taking more than 4 lots of paracetamol (2 x 500mg tabs) a day. I said no, but I have been taking 6 lots a day, for 5 days.

I really didnt know this was a problem. now I do, and im worried that something bad is going to happen!!

Hang in there with the pain, try and get a vitamin tablet down you once a day. Dont freeze your mouth with ice etc too much, eat in short bursts. Its got to be over some time.....
