I'm going to the docs this arvo- my ears are aching also I hope he gives me something stronger. I think too much paracetamol can results in liver damage- short term it makes you constipated!

I just thought I'd share my experience with you all. I am 17 and got my tonsils out August 1, making this the end of day 5, if you count the day of surgery. I would say I have a pretty good pain tolerance but this experience has not been a breeze. Here is an overview of my days so far:
Day 1. Woke up from surgery in moderate pain, rest of the day was pretty comfortable considering the meds. were still in me, this day gave me false hope of what to expect for the days to follow. By far this was the easiest day. I could speak pretty well and eating wasn't even that difficult.
Day 2. Throat was sore when I awoke, took pain meds, pain for the rest of the day wasn't bad at all. Again, gave me the impression that this wouldn't be so bad.
Day 3. This was when I realized it wasn't going to be so easy. I only felt somewhat comfortable 1 hr - 1 1/2 hrs after taking the pain meds, all the time in between i spent counting down till i could take the meds again. My advice: sleep as much as you can and keep an ice pack around your neck.
Day 4. Not much different from day 3. Woke up and took pain meds and felt extremely dizzy. I almost fainted but luckily my dad was there to help me onto the floor. I forced down some jello. I simply hadn't been eating or drinking enough so PLEASE make sure you do, even if it hurts like hell!I had some room temperature creamy soup that felt good on my throat later. Pain hadn't gotten better or worse.
Day 5. This was today. Probably the most painful of all the days so far. Woke up in a pretty decent amount of pain. Took pain meds, forced down some jello. I read a lot with the ice pack on. I've found reading is a good way to pass the time and it distracts you from the pain. Now I'm in bed waiting for 2 hours to pass so that I can take my pain meds and go to sleep comfortably.
So far the experience hasn't been pleasant, but that is obvious. Your throat is cut into and it has to heal without stitches or anything. It is raw, so obviously it is going to be painful. I wouldn't say it is anything to cry ir scream about. I feel it will definitely be worth it in the end. One of the most unpleasant parts about it is the gross taste that lingers in your mouth. It even makes water taste bad. Well, this has been my totally honest experience so far so I hope that helped some of you. :-)

I had my tonsillectomy on the 29th of June and let me tell you recovery isn't that bad.. Sure it can be lame I even threw up on the 3rd day but that is because I didn't eat with my pain meds. I went back to work on August 7th so it isn't that bad, JUST GET IT DONE! XD

they must have cut your fingernails while you were in surgery instead of taking your tonsils out then...

Hey all i feel your pain!Im 20 and all i have to say is dont worry!I had my tonsillectomy on an airforce base with quite reputable doctors. All of them got personal with me, each one asking about my life, which made me feel comfortable. It was about a team of about 7. One nurse told me she had her tonsils out and said that sometimes you can have a leftover tonsil tag that can POTENTIALLY cause you to have another surgery, but rarely. Before the surgery I was given heavy doses of morphine and the like which knocked me out.
After surgery I had the urge to puke all over the place like the meds they gave me felt like a hangover. The urge went away and I was sent home the same day. THe morning after I woke up very dry mouthed and the need to swallow/spit because my uvula was swollen. This is normal.I think they dont tell you because they know it will happen and not to let you worry.I was advised not to take and hard or overly hot foods, no tylenol, no ibuprofen, nothing spicy, and nothing to milky as it can produce phlegm(snot) in the back of throat. You should gargle your mouth with salt water to cleanse that bad breath and potential infection. No hydrogen peroxide unless you want a foamy, healed funny, back throat! Let the scabs come off naturally, this is not some pimple to pop or scar on the arm that can be played with, this is your throat! Soymilk is so good as a relief and so is oatmeal, icechips, icecream ofcourse, scramby (lol) eggs, flavored noodles(no sauce its to acidic) like ramen, even sausage if not spicy. We all are an unlucky few lol that has to go thru this, but its much better trust me. Better sleep because of increased airflow(you would be a star in track), we wont have that neck fat that develops due to the tonsils lower area. My only suggestion is that you have tonsillectomy and not your adenoids taken out which are waht produce the chemicals that ward off potential disease if Im not mistaken. Hope you all a successful recovery.
