Hi there, I'm 16 and still a virgin, and I've always used pads as a way for my period. I decided I want to try tampons, however, but every time I try it never feels right, and I feel panicky and shaky. Is this normal? What can I do to help it and successfully use a tampon?

Thanks for any help or advice! It's greatly appreciated!

Most importantly you must relax, take a deep breath before starting.

The tampons will not affect you physically, nor will they affect your virginity.

if they are inserted properly you cannot even feel them there. most people who complain about discomfort when they are inserted haven't put them in far enough.

It feels like I'm just not..uh.."big" enough. Does it get easier every time you try or should it just work the first time anyway, if done right?

The vagina is very flexible (think: it is biologically designed to fit a baby through it!)

The reason you aren't "big" enough is because anxiety over fitting it in and being nervous causes your muscles to tighten, which is why you have to relax and breathe before putting one in when you are new to it. (Try putting one foot up on the edge of the bath to help)

It's just nerves
. You aren't "too small". I was like that when I was new to it too. But tampons are so much easier to use than pads, much less messy and you can't even feel them there. After the first few days, you are so used to inserting them it's nothing. Its just first-timer nerves. Don't worry about it, if you don't feel ready then wait a few cycles until you do. theres no pressure!

Good luck! x

Thank you very much! I'll try that. It's very scary for me, but I think it becomes easier the more I think about the biological factor and it's just that I'm nervous. Thanks for your support, I'll see how it goes! I hope I can figure it out (haha).

Hey,

it's been a few days and I feel like I've tried everything. Sitting, standing, one knee up, squatting. I looked up diagrams and directions and tips, but nothing ever seems to work. I seem unusually small and I'm only getting more worried, because I've been completely unsuccessful so far. Should I go see the doctor?

Relax! You can't be "too small". As I have said, the vagina is capable of stretching several times the size of a tampon. I think it is a case of muscles tighening up or a lack of lubrication. (Ever tried inserting a tampon into a dry vagina? Ouch!!! it's trickier to put a tampon into place if your vagina is quite dry. This is quite common. If this happens to you, just remove the tampon and try again with a new one. So try relaxing by taking slow deep breaths and guide the tampon upwards and backwards towards the small of your back. Sometimes it helps to gently rotate the applicator as you insert.)

If you still have problems, simply wait and try again when your flow is heavier. There is no rush to use tampons, when you are ready you will be ready.

just out of interest what kind of tampon applicator and size are you trying to use?

I've actually tried all those things, too. (I made sure I tried all I could before I decided to ask for help again. :'( )

I started out using this cheap kind, but it was the smallest we had. I think it was Tampax Lites or something. Then my mom got me the Playtex Gentle Glides, which, she said, might be easier to slide in. However, it was the regular size, and as usual I had no better luck. I tried sitting in front of a mirror and "examining" myself, to see if that would help, but...so far, there's really been no progress.
