I had my mirena put in @ 7 months ago, I am getting my Mirena removed tomorrow. Thank goodness. Side effects are horrible.. My worst is vaginal odour, the smell is horrible, spotting all the time, back pain, weight gain. Need I say more.. The main reason is because of smell. So embarrassing, I don't have a job where I can take days off because of "female problem" needless to say, I hope I don't have the Mirena crash I've read about. Let me know more .

I've had my IUD in for over 12 years. I've noticed the smell/odor within the past couple of years, and i couldn't figure out what was going on. At my annuals, they just ask if you have heavier periods or worse cramps, they never ask if there may be an odor, and I was too embarassed to ask. (I know it's a touchy subject, but I wish they would've brought it up for me... they're the doctors after all). I'm definitely calling this week, especially since I found this site. Maybe mine is just too old, and I need a new one. I can't take hormonal birth control because I had a blood clot when I was pregnant with my son, and it was caused from hormones. Other than abstenance or condoms, it's my only other choice. Thanks everyone... at least now I know that I am not alone, and I had never heard of BV until this forum.

I have iud in place also now for almost 2yrs. I had BV couple of months ago. I was on medication for it and it gone. I notice that I have an odor also. My boyfriend will not have intercourse with me because of the odor. I think it has to do with the iud. I never had this problem before I had the iud put in place. I dont know what to do.

:'( ok here it is....I had the Paraguard IUD about 5 yrs ago. Immediately after the insertion(still on the exam table undressed) the dr and his asst are about to leave the room and the Dr looks at me and says that i may notice a little bit of green stuff and he continues out the door. I thought that was odd and sat up, looked on the exam table and sure enough, there was some nasty looking green stuff. I thought nothing of it being serious, i figured if there was a problem of any sort the Dr would address it immediately. Nothing else was said to me before i left. Yes it was painful to say the least and was happy that it was over!! 3 weeks after getting the IUD inserted, I too had the unpleasant smell that is hard to discribe because, honestly, I have never smelled something so offensive on anybody before. It kind of has a smell of metal and fishy at times and other times like rotting meat if not all at the same time. I too went to my doctor and was given an array of meds but nothing seemed to work. Dr claims its not the IUD but could not give me any explanation as to why the odor is present. After about 9 months or so of this horrid odor, I absolutely could not take it anymore and had it removed. During this time my hair has started to fall out in rapid amounts as well. So here i am 4 years later and ladies let me tell you that the smell has not left the building!! I still suffer from the odor, discharge, fatigue, BAD mood swings, and the utter embarressment where ever i go. My life has ceased at this point. I dont go out anymore with friends or anything because i know others can smell it. Thank god my boyfriends sense of smell is not very good ( or is aware of how insecure i am about it and doesnt say anything) or I would definately be alone im sure! I have been to so many different Dr's and tried so many different things and nothing seems to work. It has caused me problems at work. I hear people talk about my condition and it hurts my feelings something terrible. I have noticed one thing though...when people are around me and the odor is really bad at that point, people tend to sneeze when they are around me. I have had 4 long years to come to this conclusion so beleive me they do sneeze because of me. I have never been so disgusted, enbarressed, and depressed ever in my life and i see no hope any time soon. If this helps anybody in any way then im glad i took the time to share my experience. I wish this upon no one and only try to stay positive and hope that someday something goes my way. Good luck to everyone and i will try to keep everyone posted if any changes may occur.

Had the Mirena put in 2 months ago and over the last month developed the most stomach-turning, acidic, toxic smell down there. My hubby was so excited to not have to use the condom anymore, but now can't even stay hard because the smell bothers him so much. He said he'd much rather use condoms than deal with the smell. Its THAT bad.

Im happy to have found this site! I too have had an...oder that is very unlike anything ive ever smelled...its to the point where i dred changing clothing and going to the restroom because of it! Even right after a shower when I would typically have no scent whatsoever...this foul oder lingers still...I have had my Mirena for only about a month and a half now, and during that time I have only been off of my period for a week and have noticed this weird smell. Just like some others, I did a lot of research on this before I had it inserted and asked the doctor many questions about it and a weird smell never came up in my research. I have not been sexually active since it was put in and before it was put in I had STD testing so I know its not that.... At first I thought it was due to being on my period for so long...but then I found this and..I must say I am also considering removing my IUD.... I'm going to try rephresh today and see how that works out...but even if it does I dont think I want to do that for 5 years X_X ....

:$ I had the mirena inserted around 9 months ago and had some cramping and spotting with it, and still do have some spotting from time to time, no rhyme or reason to it. Recently my boyfriend has noticed a foul "unfresh" odor downstairs. I did have a yeast infection about a month ago but now no discharge, itching or anything but the bad smell. Its not as bad as what some other people here have said but its def. making for an awkward situation at home with my sex life. Not only that but for 2-3 months I have been SOOO depressed and not even wanting to get out of bed. I recently changed jobs so I assumed it had something to do with that. But I have no reason to be unhappy! Also I am SICK ALL THE TIME! I feel so nauseated that I have taken several pregnancy tests since getting the mirena. This side effect has been happening the whole time. Now the nausea is getting worse, when I eat, I get sick. The doctor is saying that I should have had any bad side effects sooner but thats not what these posts are saying. I dont have insurance now and thats part of the reason I got this BC so even if I didnt have it I wouldnt have to worry. I have had BV before and had alot of discharge with it so I dont think that is the problem. Has anyone else had this nausea and depression as well? If all this is going to happen for 5 years then screw this I will use condoms. Im torn. Do I get this thing taken out or what? Ive been with my boyfriend for about 6-7 months and we had a GREAT sex life previously, so more sex, more sperm, more ph screwups right? But he said he noticed the smell getting worse lately and I really dont know how long he has noticed it. I noticed occasionally and just assumed it was from sex itself and showered more. I already use unscented Dove sensitive skin soap. I need advice, tired of feeling sick and tired and now smelly too!

Ladies been there myself !!!! For over a year , back and forward to the doctors and a gu clinic , very embarrassing !!! Only to be told it was BV on all 6 occasions !! Great ! Another load of antibiotics , another testing time for me and my partner , ( too embarrassed to let him know ) another down time for me . The antibiotics work well , gone in a week , but then it comes back after each period ! I too have a non hormone iud device and have had for 6 years , but this only started a year ago !! Confused , is the coil or not ? Doctors said it could be , but when a swab was taken just on the coil thread , there was no sign of it living on the coil , so no need to be taken out , which is fantastic as I really love having it , no worries and no more babies !! ..... That was until I met a lady just like me who suffered for years , she was like my answer to my prayers . She told me to try a natural remedy named balance activ , tried it , loved it and have never had it back !! The foul rotting odour is gone instantly , and no more discharge ........ Hooray !!!!!! I buy one box a month ( which included 7 applications ) and use them just to keep the ph level normal , which it has ! Try it and please remember , go easy on the other half lol x hope it helps as it helped me x :-D

Sorry forgot to say Balance Activ is available at many stores , ie ... boots for £10 ! Even if you haven't B V but still have an odour then u can use it still ! It just brings the vaginal bacteria to a normal level , therefore instant odour free !!!!! Use when your going to bed so it can work over night , and voilà fresh , clean and back to a normal life for you . X XD

Don't douch, trust me it does not work. I have the same problem. I have had my IUD since April/2010 and in the last three months I have had a foul smell. It is ruining my sex life. My partner sometimes thinks I am not being faithful because I do not want to engage in sex, I am embarrassed. My friend thinks that I should have it removed. She thinks it is horrible to have something like that sit inside you and collect bacteria. I have already been to my doctor about the foul smell and he said nothing about the IUD and did some swabs. Everything came back clean. I am now making another appointment to have this taking care of.

*Hello to all you ladies..
So I just had my copper iud (Paraguard) placed 5 months ago.. and started noticing a foul fishy odor ..followed by itching..about 3 months ago.. I've used monistat twice now and it seems to relieve my symptoms for a few days but then it always returns slowly.. It has also made my periods last twice as long and twice as strong as prior.. I am so glad I found you girls.. I thought I was the only one who had this problem as a result as my doctor never mentioned anything about this side effect.. I love the iud as it is safe and fool proof.. however I don't know where to go from here.. I don't feel comfortable with this odor and I feel like people must notice it.. especially my partner.. it is embarrassing.. What should I do??
