Unpleasant Vaginal odor, could it be my IUD?

I have the same thing for about 5 months now. Ive heard about this cleaning system on The doctors. It's called Waterworks it's stainless steel and the water flows in and back out again without being trap in vagina. It connects to your shower with a bag and you can take it just about anywhere. I haven;t used it yet but I have order it today. I had an infection but now I just have odor.

WOW.... I am so relieved.... I thought something was wrong with me!! I noticed in more than one response, the smell and other issues came into effect after 6months or so. I began experiencing odors and brownish liquid that looks like urine leaking after about 8 months, they weren't that bab or often at first but they have gotten worse and almost always there now ( I have had the "copper IUD" 1 nyear and a half now)..... I thought there as another issue but now seeing all of these other responses I know I AM GETTING IT TAKEN OUT AS SOON AS I CAN GET AN APPOINTMENT!!!!

I am so glad i am not alone on this either. I have had my IUD for 4 months i do love it because it allows for spontaneity i already have two kids so i dont want another one. But for the last 2 months i have noticed a weird strong scent down thedre. Its not a horrible horrible smell but my husband says its a strong scent. Now i can see that it is probably the IUD b/c i have never had this before. I have tried douche but that doesnt work so i have to make an appt with the doc b/c this makes me feel uncomfy around my hubby during intercourse.

This thing sucks! I have the same copper/foul smell! I'm getting it taken out asap!

No doubt this thing sucks...they should warn women of this symptom! I am getting it out and I just got it in about a month ago...it is so gross! I have not ever smelled like this before; I am so disappointed. I accused my boyfriend of giving me something: how horrible is that!

deffinitely go to the gyno because you could have an infection

I went to the doctor immediately the next day after we had sex (the day I noticed the odor); my tests came back negative for bv, but I definitely had a yeast infection which I was instructed to treat over-the-counter. I havent had a yeast infection for over 20 years so this side effect is definitely not something I can or will deal with. Not to mention that if bv infections are a common occurance from the iud, it is just not worth all the spotting, the odor after sex, the fact it can cause bv and yeast infections on a regular basis. This is just horrible and these risks should be made clear to a woman before she gets one inserted. I am still concerned because i seem to still have a slight fishy odor which is not a smell associated with yeast infections, but after reading this thread of postings, I feel fairly certain the cause is coming from the Mirena iud. I have an appt this next friday to get it out. Horray!

All my tests have come back negative too and I've had mine in since June. I have the same brown discharge and I have never smelled like this..I think it smells like rotten meat!

I like the rephresh idea and i have used it before but last year I found out about the sea pearls tampons and basically they are reusable natural sponges and one way to clean them is to soak in tea tree oil and water. The directions say that a good way to clear up a yeast infection is to insert them after soaking in the oil. I'm soaking one RIGHT NOW!!! I can't stand the stench and I want it GONE! My husband just got me Rephresh but I'm trying the tea tree oil first!

OMG I am so glad I found this.. I have had the Mirena for about 3 years, and I have the same problem , I am so insecure about it, and it drives me crazy. I keep making appointments to get it checked out but then I chicken out, as my doctor is a male..lol I am married and have had the same partner for 7 years so I know it isn't an STD or anything. I don't have any other symptoms wither just a foul rotten smell. I am so glad I am not the only one with this problem..so it must be the Mirena I suspected as much but wasn't sure. I love it the fact that I don't have to worry about taking pills or anything but I can't go on being constantly worried about people noticing when the smell is present. I tried changing to Vagisil feminine wash and everything thinking maybe it was scented soaps or something. Well I think I will inquire about getting a gyno so I can get it taken out or see what my options are. Thanks everybody for posting and sharing your stories

OMGGGGG!!!! ok well i also have become a victim of the foul smell. Ive had the IUD in place for almost 2 years in Feb. This smell just started 2 months ago. I even secretly went to the hospital in fear of an STD and every test came back negative. I was horrified untilo i found this site. I have had the same putrid smell and its horrifying. I have no insurance and am going to have to make an appointment with Planned Parenthood and have this taken out ASAP....thank you for all your stories and making me feel at ease.

Wow I'm so glad I found this... I had my mirena put in abt a month ago (9wks after my 2nd c-section) and it's been hell since! A week and a half after I got it put in my period came down and I bed SO bad I had to stay home from work and go back to the doctor to check placement. I had to use a super absorbency tampon and super max pad at the same time and still was changing about every hour to hour and a half. I was put on some kind of progesterone pill that was supposed to stop the bleeding... well it didnt. And now to top if off I stink! I didn't have intercourse between C-sec and when I had the mirena put in and as you can imagine, I haven't had intercourse after Mirena. I figured I'd give it a break until it's that time of the month again and if it doesn't get better, I'm done!

Oh and before I forget it feels mad uncomfortable! Some days I forget it's there while others (like today) I swear it feels as if it's coming out.

WOW! I can't believe this is going on with so many women using the IUD. I have had the Mirena IUD for about a year now. at first I had the paragard IUD but had it removed after 4 months due to heavy and long periods. I have a foul brownish to color discharge which starts around the time I would normally have a menstrual cycle. The smell is just so awful, I can't believe something smelling like this can come from my body. At the times that I don't have the discharge, there still is a funny fishy ordor. If I had to go to the doctor everytime I had an issue I would be at my doctor's office once or twice a month which I don't have time or money for. I have researched everywhere on IUD side effects and spoke with everyone I know in reference to getting rid of my odor. this is what I do daily and before sex to smell the freshest...everyday I take 2 capsules of the rephresh Pro-B probiotic feminine supplement(balances yeast and bacteria to maintain feminine health) you can find it in Walmart, CVS,Walgreens,etc for about $28. I also take 3 capsules of acidolpholous capsules( (also balances yeast in the body and is the ingredient found in yogurt), 2 folic acid capsules. You can also find these vitamin capsules in Walmart for about $4 each. I use Rephresh vaginal suppositores once a month when my discharge color changes to eliminate the odor. Prior to me having sex at least 4-6 hours prior I take a kotex tampon(with the purple applicator); on the open end I pour diluted with water hydrogen Peroxide in that end saturating it then I insert it into my vagina for about 2 hours then remove and insert a neoform vaginal deodorizor. you will have to wear a panty sheild afer insertion. its will take about 2 hours for the vaginal supposiory to dissolve. After this I jump into the shower and wash with feminine wash only, no soap down there. I know this is alot but I swear by this it works I promise you there will be absolutely no smell at all. i even spoke with my primary PCP and my Gyno about my regime and they both said that it is okay for me to take the supplements but to not use the neoform deodorizor suppository too often as it can sometimes cause irritation giving you a yeast infection but since I only use once a month im fine......I hope this will help someone I have two kids and do not want anymore the iud is so conveinent for me but the ordor and discharge is the only major issue, for me I have no other birth control options so I have to make this work for me.

Glad I found you all. Ive had my IUD for just over a year and this is the second time I've had Bacterial Vaginosis. I dont have health insurance right now and feel overly dirty because of the smell (even at the rate of two showers a day). I too am afraid others can smell it. The first time I got BV the lady doc told me to not wash so thoroughly. Ick! Well I enjoy my personal hygiene and sex life and it seems like I can't have sex and always feel dirty. My IUD also causes me to have extreme anxiety for no reason. I stayed awake for 3 hours last night worried about something... but i have no idea what. Im getting this out and going back to the neuva ring. I wish something had this type of convenience but I guess you just cant have it all! Good luck to you all!

So glad I found this site. I've had the paraguard (copper wire, no hormones) IUD for about 4 months now. In the last two months, I started noticing a strong, fishy smell. I thought I had an infection, so I went to my doctor, but all results came back negative. It's just the IUD. I can't believe I didn't know about this before!! I did so many Internet search for "side effects" but never read anything about the smell. So days are worse than other. Some days I don't smell it at all. But some days my husband says he can smell it just sitting next to me. I'm giving it a couple months, but if it doesn't get better, taking it out.

I have had mine for 3.5 years and my odor has changed and have a way more than normal discharge. it is clear but thick and my husband says that he noticed the odor change about 2 years ago but it has gotten worse since. have been checked for infections and all that. i'm having mine removed a.s.a.p. i have also noticed body aches, depression has worsened, temper is horrible. i loved the mirena until i started researching and found all this information, now i'm wondering if it's this iud causing all this.
