used to be pink, now ends are purple or dark colored vaginal lips

I've had the same discoloring and have been like this since I was 12! I'm 21 now and have debated on going to a gynecologist for it. I do plan on going to one soon (just to put my mind at ease). I would suggest that if it is making you uncomfortable in any way to go get an exam as well.
As far as worrying what your boyfriend/husband think don't stress out. I recently married and my husband doesn't mention anything about the discoloring. He treats me the same way he did before we got married and started having sex.

I have read that it is indicative of yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis. A normal woman will turn red or marron burgundy or purple if sexually stimulated b/c of incresed blood flow. I am a 25 yr old female and men DO NOT CARE. If you are young, I have to stress that I am happy that I waited to be 23 to get pregnant (although through experience I can tell you that std and pregnancy scares are not FUN!) Please wear protection and get an a birth control. Although children are beautiful things, and I cannot say you would ruin your life by getting pregnant, you will definitely limit your life as to where it can go. Just something to think about. It IS indicative of pregnancy, but not the only sign. Pregnant women have a hightened hormanal input into their body, and the extra estrogen could be turning "it" purple. I would check out yeast infections b/c it DOES NOT have to be itchy or burning to be a yeast infection or vaginosis. See ur gyno and ask questions. And if you cannot, use over the counter yeast infection drugs. They are easy and can work in 24 hours even during the day and are cheap.

ok for the person who said its a 'sure sign of pregnancy'- no it isnt. i havent had sex and i have the same issue these other girls are having. so dont say something like that until you know for certain its true; you're just freaking people out over something normal.

In general, dark pink/maroon/purple coloring of the labia is most likely from increased blood flow to the area. That said it would be more affective to consider the cause of the increased blood flow as opposed to the color when trying to determine why the richer coloring is present. Pregnancy, although not diagnosed by a purple tinted labia, does increase blood flow and CAN be associated with a deeper color tone. Puberty/stimulation/arousal all affect the blood flow to the pelvis...and the hormones in birth control can influence these affects. Tanning beds may also change coloring of the external tips of the labia due to melanin increase in pigmentation (this of course assuming you went in without bottoms.) A color change may also be a sign or irritation from dyes, perfumes, soaps, etc...or possibly a sign of infection or some other dysfunction. This is b/c any irritation to the area may cause redness and inflammation, which when present also will increase blood flow.

If there are any other symptoms present then it would be best to see your gyno, who has most likely seen more labia than anyone else on this forum and would be able to give you the best information. Otherwise if it is simply a matter of comparing your own labia to those seen in pornos, you need not worry. Like all industries, the porn industry manipulates its products with makeup, props, and other tricks. The usual objective is to present a "very young" looking vagina, and psychologically the mind connects young with healthy. Which is one reason why the areas are shaved, dyed, and touched with makeup in the attempt to make the area look more like that of a prepubescent girl (not all pornos of course, but on average). Many women in the industry have also had cosmetic surgery on the labia, removing access skin would remove some signs of any darker colors as well. So if you're going to get out your mirror and try to compare yourself in this area without stage makeup, the will notice some differences. However, if you have any signs of pain, discomfort, abnormal bleeding or discharge, odor, or any other dysfunction...then consult your doctor.

When I was 30 my wife's turned dark and purple, we had been separated for a few months and I hadn't noticed it before, I will admit it was a bit of a shock, and a turn off, I didn't say anything to her, I didn't want to hurt her feelings, and I knew I wasn't suppose to let that effect me like that. But if it didn't matter then women wouldn't use surgery, cosmetics, etc to keep it pink, we are shown images all our life of what is a beautiful women, and women themselves buy into it and further the image, otherwise the cosmetics wouldn't be a billions of dollars a year business.

I am 14 and have this problem I have fingered myself many times but I have not yet lost my virginity just about. My lips are black pretty much but the rest I'd my fanny is pink apArt from were I shAve which is slightly darker. My skin colour is tanned olive. No need to panic and depressed.
Two things that bring about hormonal changes in a girl-to-women or a women are sex and birth of child.
Vaginal lips gradually turn dark from pink either after you start having your first vagina penetrating sexual encounter or after the birth of the first baby or after an abortion. For some there is only a slight discoloration.
Only a stupid teenage guy would be stuck with the color of vaginal lips. A hot raunchy sex stuff has least to do with color of vaginal lips.

Come..on..now...move on...go ahead and have the hotter sexy encounter each time you have sex.

have you ladies thought about the type of underwear you use? or maybe the brand of sanitary napkins you use? I'm 30, not really sexually active nor do i masterbate, but I do use dark colored undies. and thats when I noticed it turning dark (used to be nice & pink until a month ago).
i also shave a lot as well (which is why i look w/mirror to see if i missed anything! lol).
I'm active, so i sweat down there too, which can cause the dyes from the undies to bleed unto your skin.
so make sure ur undies are cotton and not a synethic (sp) material.

There is a thing called anal and vaginal bleaching. Its how porn stars look perfect they get it done before a big movie! You can buy it online or find a facility that will do it for you and they are out there! This issue does not have to be permanent ladies!

Well mine are dark also... my boyfriend never went down on me.. he says he don't do that... but after a year of dating he cheats on me I seen the video of him j his other girlfriend & he is going down on her for over 20mins & her cooch was pink so how does that make me feel... he won't do it on me cuz mine is dark.. she even had pimples all on her butt & near her cooch mybe some ingrown hairs or sumthing & he still ate her got....but never did me & mines clean & bump^hair free its just dark.. so I'm sure that the color has something 2 do with it

I know this is a very old topic, but I am a 21 year old male and I never gave much thought to this until I started dating my current girlfriend, and she has a darker vagina (her skin is very light complexion) and I LOVE it. Don't be down on yourselves because it isn't what you thought was ideal!
