I have this problem and it is called dysfuctional uteran bleeding, I became animic and had to have a blood trasfution because my blood levals were so low symtoms were dizzy, weak, short of breath, and heart pounding, I have to go in for uteran carterization(burn the inter lineing of my uterus) to stop the bleeding. The causes of this are unknown. I am 38 yrs old and luckily i dont want to have anymore children. hope this helps.

Does the carterization mean you will be unable to have children?

I'm so glad that I found this forum.  It's so easy to think you're the only one on Earth going through this.  I'm a 42 yr. old, child-less woman and I've been having severely heavy periods since my early thirties.  They have gotten progressively worse over the years resulting in my now having to wear Depends undergarments plus an overnight pad for added protection.  I've been known to soak through 3-4 Depends in an hour.  I've been hospitalized on several occasions and have had upwards of 4 blood transfusions in the last 10 years.

At first, using abdominal and trans-vaginal ultrasounds, doctors diagnosed me with fibroids.  After a myomectomy to remove them at 37 yrs. old I was told that I should not have anymore problems.  WRONG!  About two yrs. later the heavy periods and pain came back with a vengeance.  Finally, I was referred to a sympathetic FEMALE doctor who ordered a pelvic MRI.  That's when I was finally accurately diagnosed with ADENOMYOSIS.  Although I was not happy with the diagnosis, I was at least happy to know what the problem was.  For those who don't know, Adenomyosis is similar to Endometriosis in that the endometrial uterine lining invades another part of the body.  In this case it, unfortunately, it invades the uterine muscle walls (myometrium) causing sever bleeding and humongous clots with pain.  Currently, there is no absolute cure for Adeno other than hysterectomy which is not an option for me as my husband and I would still like to try to conceive.  This disease is so debillitating and, even worse, difficult to diagnose.  Most women, maybe many of you, suffer for years without being properly diagnosed.  If your doctors are stumped or vague about what's causing your heavy bleeding, please please please ask for an MRI or at least ask them to look for Adenomyosis.  For years, I heard ultrasound technicians and Gynecologists say things like your uterus seems "big" or "spongy" or "boggy" but they never, NOT ONCE, even mentioned the possibility of Adeno.

Doing my own extensive research, I've learned that Adeno and Endo (along with several other reproductive diseases) are estrogen dominant.  That's why it's especially prevalent in women over 35 yrs. because our progesterone levels drop at that time.  Over the last few years, I've been on several rounds of a medication called Lupron Depot which stops your body from producing estrogen and allows you time to restore blood levels, my hemoglobin (hgb) blood count has been as low as 4 (transfusion #1).  However, Lupron has many side effects like hot flashed, night sweats, and weight gain because it's essentially throwing your body into early menopause.  Plus it's unsafe to use it for more than six months.

I've now decided to go the holistic route.  What have I got to lose.  I'm detoxing to rid my body of excess estrogen and taking a natural progesterone cream twice daily.  I've also cut out meat, dairy and soy from my diet as they're also high in estrogen and I'm trying not to use any plastic bottles or food containers that have BPAs which mimic estrogen.  I'm also really careful that the products I use on my hair and body don't contain parabens or silicones as they also mimic estrogen.  I pray for all of you ladies who are also suffering and hope that you're diagnosed properly and are able to live free of the dread we feel each month.  Please post any questions and I'll be happy to answer.

Hi Im 27 and I've been having this problem for almost two years now! My clots can get up to two silver dollars in length/diameter and the other symptom I get is cramping. It feels like I'm a pumpkin and someone is scraping out my insides like you would the seeds for Halloween. I've been to the ER twice neither time was helpful at all, no information just some invasive tests I'd already had. I've been to 3 different doctors OBGYN/specialists and have done every test they could think of and all of them came back normal. They only answer I've been offered is this is all from stress. I find this hard to believe, only because it has lasted so long for me. The only advice they have is birth control pills which I havent wanted to take because I'm worried that trying to chemically alter my body might mess it up even more. But I've finally given in I've been on it for one month and no results so far. I am scared this(the clotting) might lead to future infertility as I do want to have children soon. It's so great to read other woman's experiences to know that I'm not alone.
PS I sometimes joke(you might be able to relate) with my family/husband saying I must have been abducted because I'm having alien babies come out of me!

Hi, I am only 15 years old and I am going through the same thing. It doesn't happen regularly but when it does the bleeding and clotting is severe, sometimes the clots are the same size as a small fetus. I came across the phrase 'menapause' which scares me to death as I am still a young teenager and have hoped to have a family when I am older. The first time this happened to me I was admitted to hospital as I had lost too much blood and couldn't walk as I was too weak, I thought I could of been having a miscarriage but the doctors reassured me that I wasn't but could diagnose what was wrong. It last occured last week and I have been too weak to walk or even stand up for short times such as for 5 minutes as I lost a lot of blood. It has now stopped but I am now in severe pain and it puts me in unbearable pain to even breath in, I really want to know what is happening to me because it affecting my education greatly.

Hey, I just called the hospital due to blood clots. I'm finding it very painfull. They actually asked me if I had been sick or dizzy (I haven't felt dizzy or sick minus abdominal pain). I think you should see a doctor. Especially if you have those symptoms.

Best of luck to you--take care!

I hate seeing everyone go through this, but seeing all this makes me realize I'm not alone. I've been pretty much regular since i started my period when i was 10. I've had 2 kids but after my 2nd I've noticed my body chemistry has changed tremendously including my menstrual cycles. This past April i completely skipped my period then started it in may& had it for over 3 weeks. Every since then i have bleed or spotted off & on since. I've just started doing heavy clotting which has completely freaked me out. I haven't been to my gyn/ob yet but have talked with my family physician who has said its possibly dysfunctional uterine bleeding & has put me on birth control until i can see my gyn/ob (he's so swamped that i won't be seeing him for anther 3 months). I wish y'all the best of luck & hope everyone gets things situated...this goes for me too :?

i've also been bleeding for 2 months straight and passed alot of clots everytime i put pressure on my stomach like when i coughed, sneezed, laughed...etc. bleeding first started in october til december....it stopped a little after christmas....so just now again january 16th started again and with the clots i dont have any pain, discomfort, or anyone i now know its not my period. The blood clots are the size of like dollar coins, and sometimes long or just peices here and there, i also soak a pad very quickly and end up changing pads more than 10 times a day or more :(
