At first, using abdominal and trans-vaginal ultrasounds, doctors diagnosed me with fibroids. After a myomectomy to remove them at 37 yrs. old I was told that I should not have anymore problems. WRONG! About two yrs. later the heavy periods and pain came back with a vengeance. Finally, I was referred to a sympathetic FEMALE doctor who ordered a pelvic MRI. That's when I was finally accurately diagnosed with ADENOMYOSIS. Although I was not happy with the diagnosis, I was at least happy to know what the problem was. For those who don't know, Adenomyosis is similar to Endometriosis in that the endometrial uterine lining invades another part of the body. In this case it, unfortunately, it invades the uterine muscle walls (myometrium) causing sever bleeding and humongous clots with pain. Currently, there is no absolute cure for Adeno other than hysterectomy which is not an option for me as my husband and I would still like to try to conceive. This disease is so debillitating and, even worse, difficult to diagnose. Most women, maybe many of you, suffer for years without being properly diagnosed. If your doctors are stumped or vague about what's causing your heavy bleeding, please please please ask for an MRI or at least ask them to look for Adenomyosis. For years, I heard ultrasound technicians and Gynecologists say things like your uterus seems "big" or "spongy" or "boggy" but they never, NOT ONCE, even mentioned the possibility of Adeno.
Doing my own extensive research, I've learned that Adeno and Endo (along with several other reproductive diseases) are estrogen dominant. That's why it's especially prevalent in women over 35 yrs. because our progesterone levels drop at that time. Over the last few years, I've been on several rounds of a medication called Lupron Depot which stops your body from producing estrogen and allows you time to restore blood levels, my hemoglobin (hgb) blood count has been as low as 4 (transfusion #1). However, Lupron has many side effects like hot flashed, night sweats, and weight gain because it's essentially throwing your body into early menopause. Plus it's unsafe to use it for more than six months.
I've now decided to go the holistic route. What have I got to lose. I'm detoxing to rid my body of excess estrogen and taking a natural progesterone cream twice daily. I've also cut out meat, dairy and soy from my diet as they're also high in estrogen and I'm trying not to use any plastic bottles or food containers that have BPAs which mimic estrogen. I'm also really careful that the products I use on my hair and body don't contain parabens or silicones as they also mimic estrogen. I pray for all of you ladies who are also suffering and hope that you're diagnosed properly and are able to live free of the dread we feel each month. Please post any questions and I'll be happy to answer.
