I am NOT on birth control of any type since my partner had a vasectomy 10years ago. I have the sour taste.

i used to not have this problem either - ever! but ever since i went on the pill, my boyfriend has commented that i used to taste sweet but now i'm really bitter and sour down there :(((((( i think it's definitely the hormone change in me from the pill..... need to find an alternative contraception

I don't think this issue is at all related to birth control.
I've been doing research on behalf of my girlfriend because I like going down on her, but recently (past few months) she's just had this same acidic and sour taste. It smells very neutral and nothing is amiss for her. She isn't a birth control and has never taken a pill.
One thing I did notice is that it started to get stronger when she started using tampons instead of pads. I don't know if all of you have this issue an use tampons, but that's when I specifically started to notice it. It's not age-related I can say this, because from what I can tell some of you are in your 20s and others in your 30s, but my girlfriend is 18. So the variables are limited to either her diet or the fact that she's using tampons from what I can tell. We're going to keep trying and changing things to see if it helps, and I'll let you all know if I figure out a solution that works for us. Good luck, and you're not alone, so it's no need to be embarrassed.

Very cool that you’re involved and doing your own research about it!
I wouldn’t strike birth control off the list as a factor for some women, though if your GF isn’t on birth control then that’s definitely not it for her! It’s such a finicky thing and I think for every woman the cause could be a different thing, and that’s why I think we are struggling with it so much. Especially when what’s “normal” varies so much between the individuals.
For example, I know that mine is not diet-related. In fact my diet has probably gotten better in terms of what I eat - less sugar, less processed foods... when I was in my late teens and early twenties it was fast food/chocolate/sweets/soft drink/alcohol galore!
However mine could be any number of things really... I was not sexually active before my first relationship so when I got together with my partner I went on the pill and we were having otherwise unprotected sex - and from what I’ve read, semen is alkaline and can trigger thrush or that kind of response.
As I’ve said in an earlier post, my gyno found that I had chronic thrush but in a way where there wasn’t actually an overgrowth (which is why it didn’t show up on a swab), but where my body was overreacting to what is considered to be a normal amount.
The medication I was put on cleared everything up for a couple of days... then I got my period and i haven’t been able to shake it.
I no longer use tampons myself but that’s wasn’t it for me either because I used them all through my teens and early twenties, and that was when I was “normal” for me. Still working it out myself!
Good luck with your GF and kudos for your interest and research! A lot of guys I know would just let their gf work it out hahaha.

My new obgyn doctor this week told me there are different forms of BV and different treatment. One BV can be passed to your partner and you and you partner should be treated for best success of elimination. Another form of BV is an imbalance ph issue that will not pass to your partner and treated another way. But there is a culture that can be done to test for both. He is the first doctor to know what was wrong with me after my last doctor for 3 years was not able to tell me why I was having cramping issues, UTI issues regularly and many more. He called it out in the first 3 min in his office and was dead on. In shock. I’m back to healing. Waiting on my tests.ladies if one doctor is not giving you what you need, a second opinion is always the best.

I'm 25 and in the past two years I've been dealing with lots of discharge so much that it sometimes runs down my legs. The smell is very strong and acidic and it gets worse when I have sex (condom or not makes no difference). The taste is acidic and sour. I've been tested for everything under the sun and came back clean just with an elevated white cell count. I have taken antibiotics, natural supplements and sitz baths, eat clean, sleep well and have had a long term partner who is also clean. I had an iud and removed it but no change and I'm not on any birth control. Sex is embarrassing for me and I don't know what to do anymore I'm in the prime of my life and sex is something I can't do due to the nauseating smell and taste. Anyone help?!

Can you think of what changed two years ago? Does anything else other than sex make things worse, or does anything give you any relief at all? Who have you seen? Doctors, gynecologists? How have they responded to you?

Hi,
I also noticed this issue after I started accutane. Did it go away after you finished your course?
Thank you.

Probiotics ladies. Try drinking kombucha, or eating saurkraut or pickles or yogurt (make sure it says it has live cultures/probiotics). There's nothing wrong with sour discharge, the pH is just off and probiotics are your best friend! Worked for me.

Probiotics make mine worse! Makes the discharge really flow and it smells really strong and tastes way acidic. I treated myself for cytolitic vaginosis and that made a biiiig difference. However im still not 100% so I think I may have a combination of things going on. Probiotics definitely seem to make it worse, though!

I had this exact issue for two miserable years; watery, non-stop, excessive, acidic discharge. no slippery egg white texture. odd internal cramps. it became gummy and an odd colour when dry; no scent, but it tasted foul. even my skin felt weird to the touch. I'm 28 so I have a fair idea of what is or isn't normal where my health is concerned. plus I'm a lesbian, so it was pretty devastating to my personal life.
I've been following this thread for a year in search of answers that none of my doctors and gynaecologists seemed to have. I was tested for everything under the sun. I'm not on birth control so that wasn't a factor. I don't use tampons, changing my diet and drinking more made no difference, coconut oil didn't help, probiotics did nothing. canestan, water only washes, sitz baths, going commando... nothing worked.
I finally gave in and tried the baking soda. I mixed enough to make a paste, used a syringe and left it in overnight. boom, gone. everything is back to normal. my vulva even looks a healthy colour again. it's been a month, so even if it returns at least I know I have a way of balancing the acidity out again. your results may vary, but it's absolutely worth a shot if you're suffering from this. thank you so much to everyone who recommended it.
