I was stung by a wasp on the thumb of my right hand almost 24 hours ago.  I washed the area with soap and water and took Benedryl immediately.  My right hand became very swollen before late afternoon.  This morning  the lymph nodes under my right arm are swollen and painful as is my right hand.  Should I seek medical care or is this just a normal reaction?

Hi Deb,

The swelling is likely a reaction to the sting.  If you are having no other symptoms such as difficulty breathing or hives, then you can probably continue with the Benadryl.  The swelling should go down in a day or so.

If the pain is severe or you have other symptoms see your doctor.

Good luck.
