It is likely that the chest congestion is from acid reflux... google 'GERD' or 'LPR'

I had this problem for years and it worsened and made my lungs and throat feel red raw with hacking up congestion and swallowing down irritating and constant post nasal drip.  Then I went on a whole food diet and my symptoms went away, having realised the connection with food I consulted the advice of a private food allergy clinic and was diagnosed with a likely food intolerance, having worked with a dietician and undertaken an elimination diet I have now identified most of the culprit foods that cause the problems, if I eat them the problem comes back, if I don't, my chest remains clear, from being ill every day for years I am now well most days, I just have one or two more culprit foods to find now since I do still have the ocassional problem there must still be something in my diet causing difficulty, food intolerance is like having 10 nails in your shoe, you can take 9 out, but if there is one left in there, you still have a problem, I wont be happy till I have identified every culprit food and I am completely 100% well again.

I have a son with severe food allergies. The sinus and coughing can be due to a food allergy/intolerance. The best way to dertermine a common food that causes this reaction is to keep a food journal and soon you should start to see a pattern (like everytime I eat cheese...). Once you find a pattern remove the food(s) from your diet for two weeks. Then reintroduce the one food back into your diet, if the symptoms return, then you'll know. If you have a true allergy (not an intoloernace) to the food it will show up in a simple blood test your doctor can order. Good luck! Stay safe, an actual food allergy can be fatal as your body learns the reaction it can become more powerful!

It sounds like most of these could be GUSTATORY RHINITIS. I have this, and along with it comes MANY of the symptoms depicted. It's induced for me when I overeat. I'll get a runny nose, I'll start sneezing, and I'll cough of up mucous as if somehow the food has gone into my lungs and turned into mucous. It's a defense mechanism more than anything. So it's not harmful or anything. It doesn't seem like these necessarily have to do with GERD.

I have the same problem and I have asthma.  A few doctors and the information I have studied regarding this subject connect asthma and acid reflux as coexisting problems in many case studies.  I find lately it has been worse and I must use my inhaler after eating, it helps clear up the congestion.  Sometimes, I also must use an antacid and I believe these symptoms are more predominant when the pollen count is higher or I am in a dusty area.

Hope this is helpful to someone.

Well I did't expect to find this when I googled "why does my nose get congested when I eat"

Why did I google it, well this week I ate out twice and on both occasions I noticed that I becamE nasaly congested and couldn't beath through my nose.  Something that I can recall happening every now and then however not for a very long time which prompted my search.

I on both occasions had a rice based dish for starters and my nasal passages became blocked almost instantly... Coincidence? maybe. However I genarally eat a low carbohydrate diet as I am a type 2 diabetic, which I control through diet and regualr exercise. It passed on its own about 30-60mins later.

My normal every day diet I cant recall having this problem, though its been a long time since I have eaten a sandwich or boiled up some rice to eat.

I will be paying attention closely to the things that I eat to see if I get any further reactions. At this stage I am putting it down refined starch.  I will test plain rice and Potato's though I cant recall them causing any reaction and see if I cant isolated it further myself.

Hope this helps

It is acid reflux..causes mucous and cough. You need to take food enzymes to help you break down and digest your foods properly.

I have had this for years. My lungs fill up when I eat fatty food, especially restaurant food. Doesn't usually happen when I make my own food. My aunt has it and my grandmother had it too. My aunt tells me that it's a form of asthma, but I can't remember what she called it. It had a name though.

Very interesting to read everyone's problems with this.

I used to have congestion and a wheezy chest after fast food but now it happens after anything I eat. The link certainly does seem to come from acid reflux and asthma drugs. I'm 57 now and have had some kind of acid reflux since I was a child. I have also had asthma since I was 12 years old. I read many years ago that broncho-dilators, such as asthma inhalers do seem to be a cause of acid reflux or heartburn.

I can see that after many years of having to deal with acid going the wrong way, it certainly would be a problem for the esophagus and can indeed lead to scarring. So what do we do? I'm already taking omeprazole to keep the acid away and it usually works pretty well. Still getting the congestion though. Someone posted earlier about a product called 'Serrapeptase.' I'll give this a try and see if it helps and have ordered some this evening. It it helps, I will post some feedback and let you all know.

Here's hoping.....

I also have the same issue when after eating I start wheezing and need to cough to relieve it. I also am lactose intolerant but I am fairly sure that dairy is not the issue because it will happen after eating a variety of foods. For some reason apples are one of toughest foods to eat and suppress the coughing. I don't think it has anything to do with age because I am 19 and have been doing this since my freshman year of high school, or possibly longer. I am very interested in what could be the cause because as many have said it can be very embarrassing.

I tried the serrapeptase, I was really happy with the results. I took one pill a day and got almost an immediate result. I still have to clear my throat after eating but it is significantly improved, if I had gone to a physician and had been prescribed some exotic drug that cost a pile of money I would be just as happy. I got mine at the GNC  store. I  also find that my nasal passages are much clearer. I have always had tight nasal passages, seldom being able to breath through both nostrils at the same time. Now I am always at about 75% in both nostrils. At a cost of about $25.00 for a bottle, it is absolutely worth a try. I am 55 and have had exercise induced asthma for 15 to 20 years. The throat clearing and coughing after eating started about 2 years ago. I went to physicians about this with no real result.
