I hate to depress everyone, but I've deal with this for 40 years.  Short while after eating, heavy congestion and coughing up mucous to the point where it's difficult to breath.  Once I'm finishined coughing everything up, I'm fine, but that could take an hour!   I've been to some of the best doctors in the US.  All of them are clueless.

This is not an allergy, and don't let anyone tell you it is.  I believe that it has an origin in the heart somehow.  Mitral Valve Prolapse maybe?

Unless you have determined by process of elimination that you have a food allergy, some of you may want to try taking a Zanax or something similar about an hour before eating. See if you notice a difference.   I'm not recommending this as a long term solution, and I know your doctor won't either,  but it might answer some questions.

I'm 61 and have  a similar problem for years.  This week I became heavily cogested shortly after a couple of meals.  For many years I had had to excuse myself about 3/4 way through dinner to blow my nose due to congestion and nose running.

I was diagnosed with Celiac's disease two years ago but now I'm strict about controlling glutens in my food.  My recent reaction was with home cooked meals that had no gluten.

The advice to keep a food journal seems like the best advice (I haven't tried this yet). Lactose is a possilbe issue for me (recent meals I reacted to had cheese or mayo).

I saw 3 allergist immunologist no allergies . Then I went to an ND and the reaction I was having could be an allergic reaction to dairy, wheat , dairy , sugar, corn, soy etc,,,,go on an elimanation diet . My ND told me that allergy blood test and scratch are only 50% accuarate I did not believe it until I went on the elimination diet . WOW I felt so much better, no more mucous, no wheezing, no cough or clearing my throat , no post nasal drip, the whites of eyes became super white no more itchy eyes, and my mind felt clear memory better and I felt rested and refreshed in the morning. Also I began to alkalize with 1/4 tsp of baking soda in glass of water 3 times a day to off set acidity and took the best researched probiotics, Keybiotic

I am over 50 and have had this exact same issue for a couple of years. ENT diagnosis of neurogenic voice disorder since I also feel my throat closing up (never actually closes). If I take a DM cough syrup like KOFFEX it gets rid of the congestion in a while. I also have fibromyalgia and was not sure if it was related...the above post leads me to believe not. I have also been to a Respirologist who is testing me for asthma, but I'm pretty sure it's not that. My symptoms are just like the post. I also took Here medication with no result.

That is a very interesting theory! I have mitral valve prolapse, and was also diagnosed with Brugada Syndrome a year ago. I had an ICD implanted six months ago and almost immediately after that I began having this problem with coughing up phlegm 10 minutes after I eat. I also have had post nasal drip for as long as I can remember. I was attributing it to that. Sounds like going to the doctors for this would be a frustrating venture.

I wish I could tell you that going to a doctor would be productive, but I have never met anyone in the medical community that understands this issue. I believe that it's origins are in the heart. I believe that heart issues like MVP cause other symptoms like spasms in the esophagus. I believe that this causes the symptoms we're talking about after eating.
There may be people that have allergies to food. I'm not one of them, so these symptoms have nothing to do with allergies.

I would very much like for someone to pursue your second hypothesis. I experience the same symptoms. My eyes water like heck in the morning. After dinner I immediately become "stuffed up" non productive nose blowing. My post nasal drip makes it difficult to swallow and forget about sleeping in a reclining position

Have the same problem. All this started after a year or so after a bad chest infection. May be the result of a lingering scar tissue from when I had a close call with pneumonia. It's a type of pleurisy. I have to see a doctor myself as i never had this problem when I was younger and i am into bodybuilding and fittest. I still get a slight pain at a certain point during exhaling on the right lung.

I Absolutely feel your pain! Every time I eat I'm clearing my throat every 15 seconds for about a half hour. No matter what I eat. Everybody suggests its an allergy, yadda yadda yadda. NO IT ISNT !!! Every meal, no matter the food.

I totally get it. I deal with it every day. No matter what I eat. I have to clear my throat every 15 seconds for about a half hour. It's embarrassing. I'm tired of the "its a food allergy" response. No its not. Not what I have. It seems during eating and swallowing the body produces mucous more heavily to aid in swallowing. I feel it's a mucous overproduction that just continues beyond our need for it. It's frustrating. Everybody asks, "are you okay dude". My friends and family get frustrated and I'd not dare go to a movie after eating. Everybody would be pissed at me.

Sounds familiar. My friends ask "are you ok". Everyone thinks I have a cold! Can't do a speaking engagement after eating. Would never go to a movie or some place that requires me to be quiet after eating. Very frustrating.

Hi, I have the same issue. It happens if I eat fast or eat to much. I went to an allergist and he said it was gastril. I never followed up but if I slow down and don't overeat it doesn't happen
