hii, I m from India and though I didn't have much weight gain after my tonsil surgery but I had other issues immediately after few months of my surgery such as fatigue, dandruff, depression, though all my medical condition was found out to be normal, and I have tried out everything that is told to be healthy for eating.

Chronic tonsillitis is believed to limit normal function up to 10% in kids and adults - harder to breath, sleeping disorders (burn more calories), swallowing is harder (calorie intake limited). Thus, no tonsillitis, more calories in, less calories out. The body also stops fighting the constant infection and can "focus" on what's supposed to do! It makes sense, doesn't it?

Hope it helps :-)

My brother got his tonsils removed when he was around 5, after the operation he started gaining weight and became asthmatic.  Now 20 years later he IS morbidly obese and still has asthma for which he needs inhalers on a regular basis.

I have had the same thing happen to my son who also was average weight prior to surgery and is now 9 years old and weights 120 pounds. He eats normal and healthy and very active but still contines to gain. His thyroid tested normal but I recently read that some times even if a thyriod test comes back normal it can still be slow functioning. I have recently put him on a diet for thyroids and will keep everyone posted on the results

You have no idea what we as mothers are going through watching our children struggle because of a decision we made for them. Please refrain from discounting these comments to a simple blood test and reevaluation of eating habits! It is NOT that simple.....

I am please to inform you all that putting my son on the low thyroid diet is working and he has lost 14 pounds so far. I didnt change his diet much but apparently it was enough. We started by salting his food with iodized salt and serving him fish, yogurt, and blueberries more often which help boost thyroid function. I limit the amount of peanut butter products and also dark green vegatables which slow down the thyroid function. I hope you will all give it a try on your own children because its helping my son and I would love to hear that it helps your children. We didnt see any change in weight when we first started the diet, it was probably 2-3 weeks before it started working so hang in there. Please let me know if it works with your children and I will keep you all update as to our progress...good luck to you all

I disagree with you completely. My daughter is a gymnast who works out 25 hours a week 365 days a year since she was 7 and was solid muscle. She is now 15 and had her tonsils out at the end of the summer. She put on 20 pounds in less than 3 months. She is has been continuing to do her normal workouts plus added 2 hours a week with a personal trainer and eating no processed foods at all with the help of a dietican and gained 1 pound in a month. She doesn't have any pop, only water and no sugar. Something is definately wrong here.

I am reading all these posts on weight gain after tonsils being taken out. I was 7 and aways a fit and skinny kids, i then had my tonsils and adennoids taken out and with in a year became obese. I lived on a huge property where we were always outside, horseriding, swimming, tennis, my dad was a swimming coach and i was always active. I played competion tennis, and competitive swimming but could never get my slim figure back. no matter what i did or ate, i became the overweght kid at school, but the fittest. 25 years on i still struggle with my weight, i diet, do all the fads and watch everything as well as train.Doctors just say keep going, but i know somethingis not right, ever since i had that op as a kid, its ruiened my chance to ever be slim again. Im wondering if there is a cure or diognosis out there that i havnt heard of yet. I have learnt to live with the reasilation that i never will be what i want to be however, i can only hope. If anyone knows anything please reply.

My mother told me that before I had my tonsils out I was skinny. After that I was never satisfied and ate too much. I was "husky" till high school. Started grade 10 @ 210lbs, graduated at 155lbs. Slowly gained back all and more and never been able to lose 5lbs without getting sick. My thyroid numbers are bad and medicine does not help. I have 3 sisters on thyroid medicine and it does not help them either. In my 30's I developed bad digestive problems (slow). Got side effect (fissure) and the colo-rectal surgeon said my thyroid medicine ought to be boosted to the high end of the range, not just "into range" (the low end). When I told my GP he went into orbit and stammered "who told you that?" "you can loose your license for that!".

I learned that doctors are afraid of someone looking over their shoulder about dosages even if it is what the patient needs I do not have much respect for any of them.
