weight gain after tonsillectomy

This is an old thread, so I'm not sure how many people will benefit from this. In a prior response, one person wrote they changed their diet to a low thyroid (hypothyroid) diet and there was progress. My son was in the 50% growth chart, and after having adenoids and tonsils removed grew 30% in three months. He is obese now and has a great deal of trouble controlling food intake. In addition he has trouble paying attention and has anxiety issues. I read of a co-relation of the thyroid and the importance of iodine. Please take a look at how low iodine affects the body. I've started my son on an over the counter Thyroid supplement and its helped his focus. I'm slowly going to increase the dosage of iodine to see what other results we can get, but will also start a low thyroid diet to see what more improvements we can get. Have the doctors run a complete thyroid makeup and educate yourselves on the thyroid so you can make sense of the tests that are done and what the results really mean. You know your child better than the doctors.

Is this your experience? Have you read how the children are thin and then have rapid weight gain after the surgery? This is not a helpful comment and is borderline judgmental.

Hello but I don't eat snack or drink sodas at all. My meals consist breakfast 4 egg omelette with ham and some kind of hot pepper. No lunch because I don't have time. Dinner 12'' subway sandwich or dinner at home with some kind of meat. My work has me walking 8 to 12 miles a day. I also workout at least 3 to 4 days a week. My calories intake a day is about 1300 to 1800 a day. So what am I doing wrong? How come my body doesn't loose weight at all. I have to starve myself to loose weight. Your wrong I'm a person that no doctor can answer me at all. What should I do I was skinny when I was 5 years old after the surgery I gained weight.

A tonsillectomy can cause damage to the pituitary gland which lowers the metabolism and can cause a weight gain. I too, was slim before my tonsillectomy and right after, even being more active than before the surgery, I began packing on the pounds and have battled weight my entire life...I'm 73 now and keep my weight down through mild calorie restriction and exercise.

My 9 year old had surgery beginning of last year.Since than he gained a lot of weight,I mean a LOT.He is overweight and calls himself fat.Doctor says nothing...I am desperate for some answers why ge gained sooo much weight!!!

Are you from the ENT industry? How could you have such input without any evidence? Do you ever observe how much calories the tonsillectomy experienced kid take?

My son had his tonsil adenoids out at age 8. His weight then increased from 25 kg ton 40 kg after a year. It’s definitely not a diet related problem,as his sister is eating the same food and he is more active.
I’m surprised so many parents and kids discovered this unpleasant side effects, and we haven’t been warned before the surgery!!! I’m very upset, but feel hopeless. Plan: blood test for thyroid function and prediabetics, hope parents who have found effective intervention will come back and share their experiences. This might be our only chance of finding treatment by “self initiated online case studies “.

To all parents with guilt —- we are only imperfect human. since All the mistakes start with love, it won’t make us give up.

I am a twin! I had my tonsils out when I was 5 years old, my twin sister did not. After my surgery it didn't take long for me to start ballooning up! My sister and I always ate the same food and did the same activities. People began referring to me as "the fat one" and my sister as "the skinny one". I have been suffering with extra weight that I cannot diet off my whole life, I am 40 yrs old now. Another symptom I suffer with and my twin sister does not, is my lower legs swell up when standing for long periods of time because of what I believe to be poor lymph circulation, because part of my lymph system is gone. I have always been 20+ lbs heavier than my twin who still has her tonsils. I will always be "the fat one".

I recently moved from a state with a relatively mild climate to a hotter, drier one. Even though my activity level and eating habits haven't changed, I have gained 8-10 pounds. Could it be the change in climate what caused my weight gain?
