Had my abd hysterectomy two weeks ago. My uterus was swollen like I was 5 months pregnant and I had two more fibroids growing outside of my uterus. The only real pain was from passing gas, and I tire pretty easily.  I have lost 10 lbs since the surgery and the insomnia and back pain I had been experiencing for years is completely gone.   Only wish I had done this sooner. I would recommend to any woman who has these problems to choose a good doctor and have the surgery.

I just went my Dr. Appt. today. They are scheduling my Hysterectomy in Aug 2011. I am 40 years old, I have an 18 year old daughter and an almost 21 year old daughter. Have not been able to have kids since I was 21 (took my tubes out). I had 2 c-sections. My periods have been unbearable since the birth of my 18 year old, in part to the damage that was done to my uterus with the c-section I had with her. My scar is literally hip bone to hip bone. Had issues having a 5 pound baby. lol. I had an ablation in 2009 in hopes of putting off the hysterectomy, but it only got worse. 2 periods a month for a year, and painful sex, and unbearable pelvic pain. The only issue I have is that they have to do a c-section type surgery in order for me to have the hysterectomy. No vaginal surgery as there is no room (no canal to use hence the c-sections with my girls), can't do it microscopically either, too much to remove as my uterus is so enlarged and is full of fybroids. Due to it being 18 years the scarring is pretty bad so they have to do some removal of that and she is hoping she can save my ovaries. (me too). I have not seen a post about actually being cut open to have the surgery so I was wondering if anyone was out there that had this type of surgery. Little scared, don't want to gain weight, or lose my sex drive.

I have been reading the post and have enjoyed them. I have been trying to deal with recommendations from 2 doctors as to have a hysterectomy.  I am in my 40's married and we have no children.  I was told I have uterine cancer (cancer in the lining of the uterus). I have been bleeding for 4 weeks straight which includes blood clots as big as your fists.  My husband has been great and he wants me to have the surgery but its me.  I want a child even though I know it is probably impossible. First due to the heavy bleeding, second unhealthy enviroment (my body).  My body is extremely bloated and I constantly urnitate. I feel tired but I pushes myself to the point when I get home I pass out.  I go see one more doctor to see if there is another way besides the big H?   Keep me in your prayes. I will read all comments.

Hello my surgery it's scheduled for July 25th 2011. I am extremely scared. I know I'm having a hysterectomy but the Dr advised I'm having my uterus removed but not my fallopian tubes. I don't know the difference between a Hysterectomy (uterus removed) and full hysterectomy where they include your certix and the fallopian tubes as well.
Would I gain weight if only my uterus is removed?

It has been almost 5 months since my surgery, and I have lost 10 pounds. Slow but sure.
I added some exercise. I walk 2 miles and it takes me about 40 minutes.
I have lost my sex drive, but remember the doctor took out my ovaries.

This site gets good "traffic," but also try the "Hystersisters" site. There is a lot of information on that site.

Is your doctor also leaving your cervix, or are they only leaving your ovaries?

According to my doctor, my weight should not be affected, in fact it might improve because I wont be sick all the time! When you loose your ovaries (which are attached to you fallopian tubes, so I am assuming that it is what you mean) you go into menopause. My doctor is not removing my ovaries because I am only 26 and she has said over and over again that I am WAY too young to deal with that! Many women have full hysterectomies because the problems also involve their ovaries. My doctor is removing my cervix because it might continue with the complications I have been having and there is no real reason to keep it anymore. So are you keeping your cervix too?

I wouldn't worry about weight gain, and I wouldn't worry at all if you can help it! I have my hysterectomy July 16th (just a few days away!) and I am ready to not be sick anymore!

It has been 1 week since my Hysterectomy.  I feel great, just have the occasional cramp that sends me into the fetal position from time to time.  But my weighloss has been huge.  I have lost 9 pounds. I think it is due to the lack of appetite, I just want soup, and sleep.

I am 2 weeks post op and I am still struggling with both my weight and my recovery, but my circumstances were different than most... I gained weight over the last few months because I have had 3 surgeries in 3 months.. all needed.. but still hard. However, I feel that just FEELING better will help my weight over all. I am not worried that my hysterectomy will have me gain weight anymore. Also, I am still struggling with some swelling (I can feel it in my thighs). If your doctor says you need it, don't let the fear of weight hold you back... although I dont like that my scale is going up, I know in a few weeks it will be back down and i will have energy like never before. I have been told I already act different despite still being in pain from my surgery. I think the key is that I can be more physically active in the future than I have been able to for years (I had a LARGE amount of adhesion's.)

Don't get down about your weight either, anyone who is looking at this and struggling with weight... just realize it is a number, it doesn't define you, and focus on health more than weight... in the end you'll be just fine!

Hi, I am a 40 year old who had a lap assisted vaginal hysterectomy with bilateral tubes/ovaries (salpingo-oopherectomy) 7 days ago. Had about 5 days where I was tired and a occasional sudden nausea, & slept a lot. As of yesterday I have been fine, mild cramping from gas I think, minimal to no discharge, I've lost 10 pounds, acne is gone, not hungry all the time, don't crave junk food any more. I've been out shopping, walking, enjoying my time off work, thinking of buying a boat tomorrow. Worst part is remember not to lift heavy things or do strenuous activities!

I am 51 years old, and am 2 years post op.  I have gained some weight, about 8 pounds....it is difficult to keep off.  I find it very hard, and I try not to eat much, but it is still difficult.         I am thankful not to have the previous symptoms.  I would do it again, I think.  Just watch  your portion sizes and try to drink water, it will help with the weight gain issue.

I had a complete hysterctomy on August the 22nd 2011, with removal of the uteris, falliopian tubes, both ovaries and the cervix. My Dr. told my husband after the sergury while I wa sin recoverythat my uteris was huge bigger than a basketball. I weighed the day I came home from the hospital with only a few pounds differnce in weight but a week and a half after my sergury I weighed again with a 20lb weight loss. I still dont eat much it tends to make me sick everytime I eat but am sure it will straighten out soon. I am worried I will gain weight once it does because I have been struggling and trying hard to lose weight for some time now before sergury I had lost 60lbs and fear gaining it back now. I try to drink only water all day and only 1 dt soda a day if that and try never to eat seconds of anything.

The other thing that worries me is mood swings I have them constantly its like my emotions are one big train wreck and I cant figure out where I am one second from the next. I also worry about what my sex life will be like once the doctor gives the ok for it again.

I go back on the 9th of septemper to see if my doctor wants to put me on hormone theropy. I am glad I found this site and hope we can all keep in touch and help each other through this. Thanks Kira

I had a hysterectomy last year.  Life is so good now!!! I can't say that I gained weight because if anything I have LOST weight.  Am trying to get over 100 lbs and then I will be so happy.  I think our weight was so high before surgery because the uterus was swollen and sick otherwise we wouldn't have needed surgery.  I can't seem to gain any weight, so I have to be sure and eat mega calories a day or else risk my weight coming off drastically.  I take enjuvia hormone replacement pill.  It's wonderful, no generic on market yet. I actually think this is what is keeping my weight WAY DOWN.  But the sex is amazing also, and Dr. told me he might have to lessen the strength of pill.  I said NO.  Like I said, I feel wonderful.

Post surgery. Since February of this year, I've lost 20 pounds. I feel incredible! A hysterectomy was exactually what I needed to be healthy again. It's been nothing but a positive experience for me. I forgot to add, I did not even go with hormone replacements! A few hot flashes, but they are nothing compared to the heavy bleeding, and bloat and cramps experienced before surgery. :-)

I want to say thank you to all the ladies who have had so many positive coments.  I am waiting for my surgery to be scheduled, tomorrow is my consult. I have been putting this surgery off for about two years because I was afraid from all the negative things I have heard and read.  After reading all your experiences I am now looking forward to feeling better.

I have had trouble with my periods every since they started when I was 11.  I have two kids, my daughter when I was 18 and my son when I was 21. I had doctor's tell me when I have kids that my periods would become normal, never happened. After my daughter was born I didn't have a period for a year, after my son it was almost two years before I had a period that's when a doctor told me I was premenopausal. When I started having periods again I would get a flu like cold every time (thank goodness I only had three periods a year), terrible cramps and would lay in bed for two days from the pain. I am now 37 and ready to feel good for the first time in years.
