I had my total (except for cervix) hyster on March 28, 2011. Like so many of you I put it off for years. My biggest fear was the weight gain. For those of you who are still contemplating I wanted to tell you what I experienced in hopes it might help you make your decision. I was finally forced to do the surgery because I was in misery most of the month. I was 50 years old and kept waiting to get through menopause, and finally I could wait no longer. My doctor said he had never had anyone wait so long and fight so hard NOT to have the surgery. 8 months later I have no regrets. The first night is rough, but it is good from there. I was up and about very quickly and feel great. At first you will lose weight, but after I think women gain weight because they feel better, are happy and pain free, so you eat more food. That was happening to me, and I decided to stop blaming my hormones, etc... and got back to the basics - exercise and healthy eating. I am now slimmer than I have been in years. I have stopped eating sugar and the cravings are gone, so the weight is coming off. I am no longer bloated from all the mess inside of me and honestly feel better than I have in a long time. I am wearing skinny jeans as I am writing this! I am 51 now and honestly feel great! If you are on the fence about going through with the surgery, jump over and do it. Honestly, no one fought harder than me and was worried about their weight more than me, and you will be ok, better than ok, you will feel better.

I went through the exact same thing.. But there is hope for you.

I had a complete hysterectomy 4 weeks ago. I elected to have a spinal and be put to sleep. (a surgery nurse told me she had this with her hysterectomy) I did not have the robotic surgery. In two days I was out of the hospital. I took percocet for about 5 days. I had little pain from the incisions, just some internal cramping.. For the constipation I drank Epsom Salt water. It worked miracles.. I did not need a pillow to walk or stand. In 4 days, I was getting up and down off the couch with no problems. In 10 days, no pain at all. In fact, I have to be careful not to overdo it.

Since then, I've lost 20 pounds without trying. From 198 down to 178. Every morning, I get on the scales and I'm 1-2 pounds lighter. I feel and look better than I have in years. My color is back and I feel like my old self.

If you lose weight you are EXTREMELY lucky.  I gained 20 pounds and went to several doctors who said that a 20-lb weight gain was no big deal (when I started at 115, and at the time, that was my FAT weight, i'm 5'2".  I wish that were fat for me now)  and questioned my vanity.  I know this is an old post but I wish I had more information before my hysterectomy (including removal of ovaries).  Line up a hormone specialist before the surgery!!!!!

Thank you ladies for your candid responses. Today is Wed, 01/04/2012 and I am scheduled for a vaginal hysterectomy next wednesday morning.  I started having periods at 13..and have suffered through painfully heavy periods since. Not to mention the constant cramping and the Anemia. I had a DNC about 10 yrs. ago in the hope that it might help...NOPE!   I had an endometrial ablation this last Sept...NO HELP..since this last procedure I am in constant pain..CRAMPS!!  I am so tired of feeling sick and tired....i've had enough!!!  LOL   I am anxiously awaiting my surgery. Whether I lose weight or gain weight is the least of my concerns at this point. The mere thought of no more cramps, no more bleeding, and more anemia, brings a smile to my heart! I am 46 yrs old...I've done my time with periods!!!!!  LOL   BE BLESSED!!!

Good afternoon,

I am 40 years old and I am going to be having a hysterectomy within the next two weeks. I was suppose to have it last year and cancelled. Now it seems I have no choice. My fear is the weight gain, which I have been told is due to the hormone replacement as they will remove both ovaries. I have read all the other posts and everyone has mentioned weight loss. Would someone one let me know if this is because they did not do the hormone replacement treatment? Thank you!!!

Okay, you are all making me feel so much better, I have been suffering with fibroids at least 5 for 2 years now. I have times where I cant walk and pain. I am awaiting utltra sound results right now to determin what they will remove as I also have Ovairian cysts. So I am waiting for my surgery date and very nervous. I have read all the post and feel so much better. I am 43 year old with a 12 & 16 year old and I am walking around looking like I am 5 months pregnant. I suffer from migrains and I hope that I will no longer after the surgery as the are related to my period which is another story. I am just so glad to hear that your recoveries have not been as bad as what google says. Because I have had enough.

This has been a refreshing forum to find and read through. There are just so many horror stories out there (massive weight gain, depression, lack of energy), that I was really starting to get quite nervous, as my surgery is scheduled for tomorrow (2/27/12).

I've been living with painfully heavy periods, hormone changes and mood swings for over 5 yrs now. It wasn't until I started losing 2-3 days a month out of my life (not being able to leave the house due to heavy bleeding and major pain) and becoming severely anemic, did my doctor really push to get to the heart of the problem...and send me to another doctor for more testing. Needless to say, the end result is me requiring a partial hysterectomy, due to a now enlarged uterus and numerous fibroids of various sizes. At least I now know why my bladder has felt like something is pushing on it...for so long.

Though nervous, I'm rather looking forward to getting my life, energy and self back. I was quite active before becoming so run down by everything, and am looking forward to getting back into those activities again.

Thank you (to all of you), for sharing your stories. They are inspiring. Will be sure and pop back in to update how things are post-op.

I had a hysterectomy 6 weeks ago due to large fibroids. Have to say at this point it was the best thing i have ever done. I have lost around 10 pounds, feel fitter and have more energy than I can remember having for the last few years. I had the surgery on Monday afternoon and was up and walking around 8.30 am next morning and back home by 11 am on Wednesday. The constipation at the end of about the fifth day post op was pretty bad but once over this the rest of the recovery has been great. Following my check up at 4 weeks post op I took up swimming again and now up to 70 lengths a day and walking for 30 mins a day. Please dont think I am sdome kind of fitness freak either - prior to surgery I was 5 stone overweight and did no exercise - but have a totally different outlook now and have loads of energy to work off. Please dont be put off by all the hype you read - everyone is diferent - if you feel it is the right thing for you then have it done....it is so much better than putting up with all the symptoms you have now!

Hello, I am 32 and will be having a hysterectomy in 2 weeks. I am so glad I found this forum, I knew I was doing the right thing for me but I have been depressed about all the side effects, I am glad to know that not everyone has them. I am very anxious about getting some relief from all the pain, I know I will not be 100% pain free because besides the endometriosis I also have chron's disease, but I know that the pain will subside drastically. They can't even tell me how much of the pain is from the chron's or the endo, but I do know that the last few tests I have had for my chron's have come back great, so when I found out a week ago that I have endometriosis that answered a lot of questions I had. Thank younall so much for your positive comments you have helped relieve a lot of my stress!!

I too was very frightened when I was told after 3 biopsys and a recommendation from my GYN whom I have know for 30 years to have a hysterectomy..mine was a complete and abdominal because I had 2 C-sections. I am 55 and without a doubt it was very easy. I was off from work for 6 weeks but after about 2-3 weeks I was pretty much back to normal. I am considered petite but since my surgery I have lost about 17 lbs. I believe my metabolism kicked in and I have felt great..more energetic..so ladies..for me it was a good thing.
