Hi, I will have a vaginal hysterectomy on Monday. I know it is les complicated then abdominal one, but I’m still worried very much. I would like to hear about some experiences, and how the recovery after this surgery looks like. Thanks

Hello, I had a vaginal hysterectomy a year ago. I had a severe bleeding and menstrual cramps. It was only a partial surgery, and just my uterus above the level of the cervix was taken out. I was in the hospital for two days, and the whole recovery lasted for four weeks. It wasn’t so difficult, because my husband helped me with dressing and walking. The recovery is much more difficult for those who have a total hysterectomy. It can last up to six weeks. After the operation, I had soreness around the operation site, and I was taking some painkillers. A doctor was encouraging me to go for small walks, and not to lay in bad the whole time.

I had a vaginal hysterectomy, and it was the easiest thing I have ever gonr through. I had no pain whatsoever, in fact it was hard for me to stay down, I felt good and wanted to get back to normal activity, which of course you can't for a few weeks.
Don't be afraid , you will do just fine. Just do what the doctor tells you after your surgery, that's the most impotant thing to remember.

:-D I, too am finding it difficult not to just get on as usual after a total hysterctomy. I have to be reminded I had any kind of surgery at all, excellent.

hallo rwennie,

if you happen to read this or anybody who had partial hysterectomy with their cervix still intact, like mine, i wonder if this can cause mini-periods?

2 days ago iwas scared to death when after 3 weeks from LAVH, my vaginal discharge was bright red! o.O It was only 1 day though, i think twas only like 2-3 teaspoons. But still it worried me bec it was not like the light red or brown-ish discharge i have since the OP.

Now i have again the light red/ brown-ish discharge & little less amount.

I am planning to visit my ob next week to have an explanation of the Report Letter from the HospitaL ( in German ). I feeL i need to know every DetaiL of the operation so to know what to expect.

I also would ask my Ob if Cervix can cause min period? Any experience from out there ??

thanks for some answers..

I had a vaginal hysterectomy on Dec 9. Less than 2 weeks ago and I was very worried about pain. But from the time I woke after the surgery I have not had any pain what so ever. I am supposed to be out for 6 weeks and resting but I dont even feel like I had surgery. Had I knwown how easy it would be, I would have done it years earlier.

I had a TVH & anterior bladder repair on Jan 8, 2009. I felt ok after the surgery, but the more I did I started to notice the pain from sitting to long and walking after sitting in the groin area. Sitting in a stair felt like you just got off a horse for the first time. I'm 7 weeks post op and I still hurt. My Doctor said everything look ok.

Today is March 24, 2009 and 5 days ago on March 19th 2009 I had a total vaginal hysterecomty. Besides the soreness down below from the incisions, I didn't have any discomfort. I required pain meds in the hospital for the cramping the day of the procedure but other than that nothing needed for pain. I am scheduled to be out of work for two weeks but anticipate that I will go back next week because I feel great. If you have a choice, the vaginal hysterectomy is the way to go.

Good luck

I am due to have a vaginal hysterectomy on thursday 9th July and having had a consultation with my consultant yesterday he asked whether i wanted to have my ovaries removed at the same time and that the decision was mine as if they are still healthy i could keep them and go into the menopause naturally, as having them removed would apparently make me have instant menopause. I am 52 years of age and have had heavy periods for 18 months and unfortunately terrible hormonal headaches which i havnt had since a teenager. I am looking at the pros and cons of having them removed one problem I am afraid of is that if i go on hormon replacement it will have the same effect as the pill or coil which made my headaches unbearable when i was younger and i fear that may happen again but if i keep my ovaries i will continue to get these hormonal headaches even though i will not have any more periods it is a catch 22 situation. I expected to have a surgical cut for my hysterectomy and was estatic when the surgeon said a vaginal hysterectomy and having read about all the procedures i am hoping that the recovery period wont be that prolonged. It was wonderful to hear of your experience of the procedure and was wondering did you have your ovaries removed and have you experienced any problems and info would be much appreciated. Hope you are now feeling stronger and everything returned to normal.
Best wishes

HELLO! I HAD A VAGINAL HYSTERECTOMY A WEEK AGO (7-17-09), I WASN'T HAVING ANY PAINS AFTER THE SURGERY EXCEPT FOR THE CRAMPING N BACKACHES WHILE I WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR 2 DAYS. I'M STARTING TO FEEL HEAVY CRAMPING ON BOTH SIDES, I ALSO FEEL A LOT OF PRESSURE DOWN THERE, LIKE IF WAS IN LABOR N HAD TO PUSH, OR IF SOMETHING WAS TO COME OUT. I CHECKED N IT LOOKS OK; BUT I DON'T KNOW IF THIS IS NORMAL. AM I SUPPOSE TO FEEL LIKE THIS NOW? IS THE CRAMPING N PAIN NORMAL, OR SHOULD I GO TO SEE A DOCTOR? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ASAP!!! I WOULD HATE GOING BACK TO THE GYN FOR NOTHING. WHAT SHOULD I DO????

I had a complete vaginal hysterectomy (uterus, ovaries and cervix removed) this past Monday. I was in the hospital overnight and had some cramping, but pain medication managed it just fine. I am 55 years old and I feel great, and it is hard to sit and relax and not do any lifting or housework when you feel so good. I am still taking Percocet every four hours, but as soon as it runs out I will be off of pain meds. A vaginal hysterectomy is THE way to go! I can't believe I had major surgery just 4 days ago! I never thought it would be this easy.

I had my surgery on Aug. 6. I had a complete hysterectomy. They removed it thru the vagina. I agree with sitting for a long time and then walking. It does feel like you got off a horse. I am on my 6th week of recovery and cannot get back to my usual activities. Slowly but surely, I guess. I did however get a rash from something they put around my belly. The dermatology doctor said it was an allergy to the medical tape or betodine they used. Don't know but I hope it heals soon. But to sum up....not too much pain, no bleeding and was walking more after a week.

I just had a vaginal total hysterectomy partially done with laproscopy on Dec 18, 2009. Today it's Dec 27, 2009, just over a week later. I have a lot of pain in my pelvic region and am very constipated, probably from the pain medications. I am trying to increase my fibre.

I get up and walk around but after about 1/2 hour am back to sitting. Day before Christmas I over did it and was sleeping and lying down lots to make up and extra pain med.

Today I'm trying to stop the pain med except the ibuprofen which the doc said was good to keep inflamation down. I think the worse thing is the bowel issue which causes pain.

I am going to see a specialist on bioidentical horomone replacement. They use the saliva hormone tests to check your levels and figure out if you need hormones or not. The doc wants me to take estrogin patch but I am reluctant to take anything like that. I am 50 but still a young 50 and was good with sex etc, not really menopausal at all except the odd hot flash and sweat.

Does anyone else have experience with this and what is best to do for hormone replacement?

Hi had a full vaginal hysterectomy and pelvic floor repair just over a week ago. have had no pain at all and very little bleeding. Was in hospital just one night. However after five days had a sudden gush or red blood and a couple of clots. No pain. Straight back on phone to consultant and to colleague who had had same operation a year ago. Was reassured by both that this can happen. Consultant told me they leave a small hole in vagina for blood to pool through and it sometimes goes with a whoosh!! Two days later bleeding stopped and feel to be back on track. Was going for walks after only three days after op. Tips. Do NOT lift anything. Don't bother with laxatives- drink a large glass of prune juice before bed and eat loads of fibre. I've stopped eating meat and eat lots of butter beans (delicious in pesto) and dates and prunes. Think it helps if you are relatively fit which I am. The bulge has, to quote, my consultant, "gone right up to your tonsils!!) Don't stay in bed- have a shower, get dressed, put on your lippy and go for a walk!!
