I would like to start some serious backstroke swimming. I want to know more about backstroke starts and turns. I wonder how do you know when you reach the other side of the pool? That is, without hitting it with your head. Can I turn on my stomach from time to time to check out my current position? Also can I push myself with my legs when turning?

The answer is: no and no. At least if you consider competing at official races. When it comes to backstroke, swimmers must remain on their back for the entire race. The only time they are allowed to flip on their stomach is to do a flip turn. Some swimmers make mistake during the backstroke flip turn. When a swimmer is close to the wall to make his flip turn, he should count his strokes and flip over on to his stomach. However, at this time, once his arms have stopped moving he may not kick (usually the wall). That is when some swimmers make mistake and kick or push against the wall. So, you cant turn on your stomach to check your current position and you cannot push yourself against the wall during the flip turn. You will be disqualified if you do either one of these two.
