I heard the word colostoma used in relation to the treatment of colon cancer, and I was just wondering what it was. I think that operations of part of the colon to remove the cancerous growths is a normal part of the colon cancer treatment. Does it follow from this that colostoma a prosthesis of the colon, or would I be wrong?

Are you sure that this is the word you heard? I think that you mean colostomy. Colostomy Is necessary after the procedure of removal of the colon cancer in the patient. When the surgeon removes the part of the colon that is infected with the cancer cells, he than saws back two healthy ends of the colon. Until this heals back the patient needs to have a colostomy in order to have bowel movements. This can be performed right after the procedure of the removal of the cancer.
