My sister is having a new boyfriend and I don't like him at all. I have tried to tell this to her but she just doesn't want to listen to me. We are fighting because of this problem and I don't know what to do. She has changed completely and now she is doing something that she never did before - she is eating a lot! I mean, A LOT! I am not saying that he has to do something with it, but everything started when they started to date. I can see that she is not happy. I found a diagnose on the internet - a binge eating disorder. What is binge eating disorder and how can you prevent it?

Hello. Binge eating disorder is an eating disorder that is manifested with uncontrolled eating. You eat even if you are not hungry, even if you don't have a reason to eat. You are eating while you are hiding from others, etc. Those are the first symptoms. The exact cause of this disorder is unknown, but it is usually related to stress, some problems in the family, life, etc. When it comes to prevention, there is no possibility to prevent something like this. But one thing is helpful - if you notice the symptoms in the first place, and if you react soon, you can be healed quickly.

Yes, but it is also connected with dieting and chronic dieting as well. People who tend to lose weight usually later get diagnosed with this eating disorder. I agree, there is no chance to prevent something like this. It is impossible, but I agree that if you find out that you have something like this or similar eating disorder if you do some steps to heal it quickly, you won't have further problems at all. It is hard to set one thought in your head - that you need to stop eating junk foods. Almost impossible. Someone needs to help you cope with it.

for people who are diagnosed with binge eating disorder there is just one helpful thing - it is very helpful for people to begin treatment as soon as possible, as soon as they begin to have symptoms and as soon as they notice that there is something wrong with their behavior. By noticing and treating early symptoms, people may have a better chance of avoiding the full syndrome and have a quicker recovery than others. unfortunately, this type of disorder is something that you cannot prevent. if you could, those disorders will be easy to handle. so, focus on treatment, not on the prevention because you can't know is this going to happen to you.

hello!
Update - I have tried to talk to her and I told her that I have talked to the doctor, even if I didn't. But this what you wrote in this forum is pretty much enough for me to realize what kind of problems she is dealing with. She doesn't want to listen to me and she keeps telling me that she is eating a lot because she is nervous. She admitted me that she is hiding from him and from everyone else because she doesn't want anyone to see her eating. But she swears that this is caused by the stress of some other things. I don't know what to tell her. I can see in her eyes that she is sad and that she understand that I just want to help her, but she is refusing...

But, that actually means that you are very close to help her, because she sees that you can see her problem and that is a huge step. People usually don't want to admit that they have this problem. Or any other problem indeed. Anyway, you have to be persistent and you have to mention this to her very often. In addition, teaching and encouraging healthy eating habits can be really helpful in preventing the development or worsening of eating disorders.Maybe she is just at the beginning of this so there is a help for her. When I say help, I mean, quick help. Varieties of programs have been developed and could be found on campuses, online, so I suggest you do some researchers, to find some program and then you need to tell her about those programs.

Good day. I have this disorder. And if I could, I would prevent it. But there is no chance because you don't even notice when you are stuck on this thing. All that you can see is that you are not feeling very well and that something is changing, but you don't generally notice an amount of the food that you are eating. You think that you eat because you are hungry. When you are not hungry, you are eating because you are nervous. And you are stuck in some circles like there is no way out. I had some issues in my private life and I was aware of this. That is why I found it much easier to talk to my doctor. True, the doctor is my friend so I had some sessions with him. But now, I am feeling way better. I still have some overthrows when it comes to food, but not as I used to. I even lost 10 pounds. When I saw that, I have to tell you that I am much happier.

Hi, I agree that some programs can be helpful, but in the combination with your doctor. Talking to your doctor has a big influence on your recovery process. Also, it is very important to identify and treat other psychiatric conditions, that is why you should consult with your doctor. Eating disorders like this one usually are not alone, they are accompanied by some other things, and this all can lead to several complications or worsen eating disorder symptoms. Recognition and early treatment eating disorder improves also the chances of full recovery. But I think that your sis will need to talk to someone who is expert for this.
